World Baseball Classic

The shortlist for the World Baseball Classic rosters is up -- http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/wbc/rosters.jsp?content=alphabetical -- and only three Indians are represented, including Jose Hernandez. Anyone else surprised that Ronnie Belliard and C.C. Sabathia are the only players being considered for the classic on the Indians?

I'm surprised that Jhonny didn't make the list for the Dominican Republic. I'm even more surprised that Pronk isn't being considered for the U.S. team. I know it's a (very) deep team and that he'd have to DH, but he did just finish fifth in the MVP voting. But probably most surprising is that V-Mart isn't on the Venezuelan team's short list. Henry Blanco instead?

I suppose this isn't exactly bad for the Indians organization -- less chance of injury, etc. -- but it would be fun to root for some of our guys in this thing, especially since C.C. probably won't make the final cut for one of the USA's 13 pitching spots. Any thoughts?

Re: World Baseball Classic
The thing that's cool about this is that there are several teams that could win this thing. The Dominican Republic's roster is just as good or even better than the US's team. Puerto Rico's team looks pretty good, and then there's Venezuela, Cuba, and Japan as well.

As an Indians fan, I would have no problem with Sabathia not pitching in the WBC. Victor Martinez, too. I'd rather have them healthy in August and September.

Re: World Baseball Classic
There's no way Victor doesn't make Venezuela -- the better to study Santana, by the way.  As for Hafner, is there even going to be a DH?  And even if there is, how can that be anyone but Barry Bonds?

Re: World Baseball Classic
Yeah, they are going to use American League rules, so there will be a DH. Good point, Bonds probably has that spot locked up.

I don't think players that aren't on this list will be eligible for the final roster of 30, so, no Victor.

Lastly, some of the Latin American lineups are pretty filthy - the Domincan Republic comes to mind. (How'd you like the top of your lineup to consist of Guerrero, Pujols, Ortiz, Ramirez, Soriano and Tejada? That's terrifying.) But pitchers are going to be on mandatory pitch counts and mandatory days of rest, so pitching depth is going to be of great importance. So a top two of Pedro and Colon is real nice, but who's your number three? And who closes for you? Mesa? Hah! If the U.S. has a strong suit, it is pitching depth, which is going to be a major advantage.

Re: World Baseball Classic
I really hope sports fans across the country get excited about this event.  I don't think people should be too concerned about injury worries because the potential for fantastic games outweighs the risk.  We shouldn't look at the games as being exhibitions, but rather an extension of the season.

I think Alex Rodriguez might end up on the Dominican team, too.

I wonder whether the Cuban defectors will play.

My lineup:

Crawford LF
Damon CF
Bonds DH
Teixeira 1B (or Lee, this one's tough)
Berkman RF
Chavez 3B
Varitek C
Utley 2B
Jeter SS

Re: World Baseball Classic
I'm pretty excited.  I'm particularly excited to see how the Japanese and Cuban players fare against MLB talent.
