Making some sense of it

A lot has been written about this potential trade (in all its various forms). Even if I buy the arguments that have been put forward in favor of the trade, it still doesn't gel in my mind for two reasons:

  1. Michaels arrest - this is not the type of personality that Shapiro gets excited about
  2. When Shapiro trades an established player for a prospect, it is usually 2 or more legitimate prospects coming our way - and that makes more sense because of the probability that any prospect actually makes it
That being said, I have a hypothesis about what has been going on here. I think the original deal that started all this was (essentially):
Crisp to BOS
Marte to CIN
Kearns to CLE

Then CIN got cold feet (see #2 above) and so BOS says to Shap: "We'll give you Marte and a relief pitcher so you can go get Michaels from PHI."

Shap says, "I don't want Michaels, I want Kearns. You are going to have to sweeten your offer to CIN."

BOS says "NO" & keeps pushing the Michaels option. Shap says,"I'm always willing to listen, put together something that I can get excited about." And that's actually where we stand right now. I don't think there is any deal at this point.

Re: Making some sense of it
Cap'n...why anyone would want Kearns over Marte or Crisp, I do not know. The guy can't stay healthy, can't hit for avg., has bounced around from MLB to AAA, and plays a position where those qualities are readily available. There was a suggestion that a deal with CIN broke down...Westbrook for Kearns...but that would only make sense if Arroyo was included in the BOS deal, because Westbrook for Kearns straight up is a joke.
Maybe Michaels got arrested because he was tired of being a guy who could start on many teams but wasn't being given a chance, and it all became too much for him.

Re: Making some sense of it
Yeah, I can't imagine the Tribe was interested in replacing Crisp with Kearns straight up.  Now if Kearns were a Blake replacement...

As for Michaels arrest, Shapiro might not be happy about his personality, but it does give Reuben Droughns and LeBron's mom someone to hang out with.

Re: Making some sense of it
Kearns is slightly younger and has enormous power potential, plus, again (say it with me now) he has enough arm to play right field.  He has a weak average, but his other numbers are all great.  Possibly they've had Shelton look at him and say, I can make this guy better.  Everything depends on cost, but I'm sure they'd like to acquire him.

Re: Making some sense of it
I have no doubt they would like to acquire him under the right conditions, but thus far he is one of those big potential big name recognition guys who has not put it together, and thus represents an enormous risk. Would they take that risk at the right price? Of course. But not for an established player straight up (I would hope).

Re: Making some sense of it
I'm not saying this was all there was to the scenario, just that this is what the core pieces may have been. I think that the deal as advertised is a cobbling together of tenuously linked discussions. Here's another piece that makes me wonder - Philly is very interested in Shoppach.

Re: Making some sense of it
Off the field character/legal issues might not be inconsistent with the "Indian Way", which I take to be roughly about unselfish play, coachability, and hustle.  In one the of the other threads, one of the commenters from Philadelphia mentioned that Michaels was "team" player.  If there were evidence that he was complaining about his situation or that he had a reputation of resisting coaching, the Indians might be less interested.  Of course, these on the field "virtues" are vague and can be of questionable value, but Shapiro seems to put stock in them (see Bradley).  I bet guys like Manny Ramirez (whinning, hustling) and Russell Branyan (coachability) are good examples of guys that might not have bad off the field characters, but don't fit the "Indian Way."  If I recall Bradley was traded as a result of on the field troubles, not right after his off the field legal trouble.

Re: Making some sense of it
You make a good point re: the way the Indians seemed to distinguish clubhouse issues (Indian Way) from off-field troubles.

As a rule, for a young player to be unhappy with a limited role is not necessarily considered to be a bad attitude.  It's an expression of his desire to improve and get an opportunity to prove himself.

I remember last offseason, Sizemore was a bit bitter at being sent to Triple-A (which lasted 24 hours).  And Wedge basically said, good, he should be unhappy about it, I certainly can't expect him to be happy about it.

It's one thing for Eduardo Perez to settle into a bench role, quite another for a guy under-30 who's never been given a full-time shot.  Granted, Michaels at this point is somewhere in between.

Other than the legal incident, I've never read a bad word about Michaels here in Philly.

Re: Making some sense of it
While I agree that it's always great to pick up good players who are also good people, you can't expect your whole team to be full of angels. In some cases, it's actually beneficial to pick up a player with a bad reputation. For example, Billy Beane swiped headcase Milton Bradley (and Antonio Perez) away from the Dodgers for one decent outfield prospect. Had Milton been a model citizen, he'd almost surely still be in LA. Now, he's in Oakland for a cheap, productive year or two, and then they can cut him and his mouth loose. It's nice to have good people on your team, but you can't be afraid to pick up a guy like Michaels simply because he's a punk. He also has a chance to be a pretty good starting outfielder, and he's not very expensive. He's a solid pickup, even if he is a criminal.

Re: Making some sense of it
Good distinction by Franklin.  Seems that the bar fight was an isolated incident.  But by all accounts, he's a good teammate.  The "good with the team" stuff seems to be #1 in the Wedgie book of morals.

Re: Making some sense of it
Great points by you both.  One of the points I heard Shapiro make on XM the other day is that he and Wedge feel that the only way - and he said only way - to build a consistent winner in our market is if the players buy into something that is bigger than themselves.
