Sheff on Abreu

"He's a good player, but like I say, you can draw it up any kind of way, he ain't me, and that's the bottom line."

You guys want this jerk? Is his production worth the mouth? The negative influence on a young team? Injury risk? Think he'll be happy in a re-building franchise?

No thanks. He's Cancer.

Re: Sheff on Abreu
I don't think he's an option for us anymore. We dealt the chip we would have probably sent to the Yankees, and we can now sign a free agent 1B/OF since we don't need to sign one to play 2B. In the end, it looks like five years of Barfield or one year of Sheffield...easy choice.

Re: Sheff on Abreu
He'll run his mouth about his contract by the All-Star break, no matter if he names the figure himself.

NO to Sheff!

Re: Sheff on Abreu
But he's right.  And I don't see how it hurts the team.

Apparently Sheffield just does not allow anyone with any common sense to advise him.  I could have explained to him that there's a simple reason he's being traded and not Abreu:  He has a more tradeable contract.

But he never asked.

Re: Sheff on Abreu
You don't see how it hurts the team?  While character may not win pennants, don't discount it either. A young team does not nned to be exposed to a selfish, whiney player like Sheffield.

Re: Sheff on Abreu
Yeah, you know something, I generally feel the same, but after the disappointments of 2006 and the wafts of general listlessness wafting out of the dugout, I for one am done sacrificing any part of our roster to some vague notion of "personality."

Personality is not character, and character may not have much to do with winning ballgames in any event.  Sheffield plays his ass off and is a borderline Hall of Famer.  If we acquire him for a sensible price, I'll be cheering.

Re: Sheff on Abreu
I hate when he opens his mouth and I'm not begging for him, but he would sure look good in our lineup.  There's not many guys I hate to see worse at the plate facing Tribe pitching than Gary Sheffield.  And I don't know if I've ever seen a quicker or more vicious swing than his.  He's a beast with a bat and he'll be playing with a grudge in '07, especially when facing the Yanks.

I won't care if we don't get him, but I'll be really excited if we do.
