Tigers sign Bonderman

The Detroit Tigers signed 24 year old pitcher Jeremy Bonderman to a 4 year/$38 mil contract.  He could have been a free agent after the 2008 season.

He gets $4.5 mil next year, $8.5 in 2008, and then $12.5 per year for the next two years.

This should give guidance for what Westbrook can expect to receive.

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
I can't decide if Westbrook should come cheaper or more expensive than Bonderman but my gut says cheaper. It seems like Bonderman is vaguely more of an injury risk, because of his age and workload, but he's also been considered an ace in waiting for a long time and he's very close to finally getting there. Jake can't match his stuff.

On the deal itself, it's a great one for the Tigers. It's cost-effective and actually heads their own bad decision off at the past. They brought Bonderman up so young that they were going to lose him just as he was entering his prime. With this deal, obviously, that's not going to happen.

He will still be pitching for the Tigers, who I think are going to be miserable again pretty soon, but what can you do?

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
Bringing Bonderman up too soon was still a mistake in my opinion.  Instead of paying him around league minimum for the next two seasons, he'll be averaging over $6M.  Add in the dollars he'll receive the final two years of his contract...A poor economic decision to get a 20 year old into the rotation.  Possibly this can serve notice to the Indians whether or not to rush Miller this season.  A full year in triple A can't hurt.

Its tough to compare these contracts.  Westbrook is entering free agency, which, if things occur similar to this season, increases the dollar value of a contract by 2-3M.  I don't see Westbrook at $15M, but I won't count out $10+...There isn't any way the Indians can think about handing him $10+ unless attendance sky rockets for this season.

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
Is that really that crazy? I think Verlander is an injury waiting to happen with Leyland's style, Rogers and Robertson are both due for a fall to earth, and I think they're going to have offensive holes at first, catcher, and third in the near future. Monroe and Thames also had they're career years last year, again just my opinion, and Magglio is probably not going to get any better. I do think Granderson is probably going to turn out to be very good and I like the Sheffield move.

I guess Miner might be pretty good going forward but I don't exactly love his peripherals. Also that bullpen is/was sick but I'm hardly in the business of predicting bullpens after the 2006 Indians.

It's not a guarantee, it's just an opinion. Unless Maybin turns out to be great, I don't think this team is going to be all that good over the next few seasons.

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
Actually got me thinking about the parallels. Without going into detail since everyone should be able to pick the analogies up pretty easily:

Cabrera = Zumaya
Betancourt = Rodney (late blooming setup men)
T. Walker = Wickman
J. Walker = Sauerbeck (streeetch)

And then Howry hanging out in the corner.

You mean T. Jones, not T. Walker.

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
Im sorry but you cant compare Zumaya with Cabrera...He never had the rep. that Zumaya had/has. Oh btw. Zumaya has a unhittable 100+ Mph Fastball that he throws troughout an inning...sorry but not a good comparison with Zumaya

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
Cabrera has also always been a closer with a pretty clean bill of health.

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
People's memories are incredibly short. Cabrera had a .99 ERA in Buffalo before he got called up.

Are they the same player? No, certainly not. Are they comparable? Yeah, very. Just because Fox keeps telling you that Joel Zumaya "throws harder than anyone in the history of baseball and will probably one day be remembered as the greatest power reliever of all time!" doesn't mean you have to believe it.

Wow ... German fans are hard core.

How many Euros will you bet him?

Re: Tigers sign Bonderman
That's not the point. Projecting a player to have a better career is a lot different from saying the two were never comparable as they entered the majors, at different times.

Not if Zumaya keeps playing Nintendo.
Sometimes you just gotta be lucky
