Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Nationals are considering offers for Chad Cordero, so long as the players acquired would help in their rebuilding program.  They're looking for a package of even younger pitching in return.

Cordero has averaged something like 5-4, 30 saves, 77 IP, 27 BB, 74 K with a 2.66 ERA over the last three years (he's been consistent), at ages 22-24.

The only negative that jumped out at me in his numbers was the 30 HR allowed in those 230 innings.  Washington is a pitchers park, so one HR every seven IP is high.

Would a package of Lofgren, Sipp or Perez, and Guthrie or Davis be enough to acquire Cordero?  Would it be worth it?

My gut reaction: sign me up!  Which makes me think that they're not going for it.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
You're right, that's probably not enough.  What if it was Carmona instead of Davis/Guthrie?  At that point, I'm not sure if I make the deal, but I'm still not sure if it's enought from the Nats point of view.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
I would love that proposed deal.  I was going to say that there is no chance that Nats would do it, but then I remembered that Jim Bowden is still their GM.  So who knows!

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
Keep in mind that he robbed the Reds blind this year. I did laugh out loud when I read what you said. I lived in Cincy for awhile and people there loved Bowden and talked about his "gunslingers mentality." I was always confused as to what they saw in him.
Wait 'til next year... or something like that

Well, it's true that he did rob Krivsky over the summer; but I take that as more of a commentary on Krivsky's incompetence than Bowden's genius.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
Of course the incompetent Krivsky robbed Shapiro last spring.

My point is that it is hard to judge a GM from one trade.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
Krivsky won the bidding with a D prospect.  There's no reason to think he valued Phillips very highly.  He just got lucky.

Apparently the Reds are now saying that in addition to being robbed blind, they were deliberately misled about the state of Majewski's shoulder and will be filing a grievance over the trade.

Oh man I would lurrrve for us to get Cordero....and as jdudas points out there is always the chance Bowden would be stupid and it wouldn't cost that much.

And think of it--the Tribe and the Chief!--the Nickname Matchup Quotient is off the charts.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
I think Shapiro is probably in on Cordero, or he ought to be.  Story in the Post yesterday about the Nats future plans.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/05/AR2006120501443.html

The Nats will not be replacing Soriano's salary and are dedicated to building from within.  Not exactly Bowden's strong suit if you ask me.  I guess that's Stan Kasten's influence beginning to seize hold of that organization.  Anyway, I don't see having a top tier closer as a necessity for a organization that is committed to building up their farm system and the longer term process of player development.  Cordero has to be one of their biggest bargaining chips.  I think we'd have to come strong to get him, but this is almost the ideal deal for us.  The question is simply how much would Shapiro part with in order to get Cordero.  He's under team control through 09, becoming a free agent in 2010, so his price tag should be high.  The Nats are reportedly asking for three players in return for him, a major league ready starter, and a top prospect at least.  I would float the idea of Trevor Crowe, Jeremy Guthrie and Jason Davis (or Brian Slocum).  My guess would be that they would demand Carmona in the place of Guthrie.  Any thoughts on this?

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
Those homeruns scare the hell out of me. Still, he's a proven closer (TM).

Your proposal seems reasonable but it depends on how the Nats are defining things like "major league ready starter" and "top prospect." I understand that Guthrie or Davis could probably start tommorrow if they had to but I question either's ability to stay in a rotation for 25 starts. However, Crowe is, to me, maybe even a little better than "top prospect" but I'm probably overvaluing.

It's hard to get a feel for what they want. Can we pass Drennan or Max Ramirez off as a 'top prospect'? Or maybe both? I don't want to morgatge the future but Crowe is close at this point and it would be fun to see him finally get up. Still, he's an outfielder and we have a lot of those. They can have their pick of minor league/AAAA SP outside of Miller and Lofgren in my estimation. Guthrie, Davis, Slocum, etc. Pick 'em.

In finality, I'd float Gutz, Davis, and Guthrie maybe? Is Gutz a top prospect? I'm fine with floating any of Gutz, Choo, or Garko. If Garko though, I probably want something a bit more in return (or maybe keep Davis-ugh), like a A pitcher.

Is there anyway to get Casey Blake in on this? Bowden's an old hard nosed baseball guy, right?

I'm rambling.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
I'm with you on most of the names that you're throwing out there Andrew.  I'd be surprised if Shapiro and Bowden haven't been talking about just such a deal.  Sure, I'd prefer keeping Crowe and giving away Guthrie, Gutierrez and Slocum, Davis or a lower level pitcher.  But who really knows how high Bowden is valuing Cordero?  I don't.  But I do think that they will ultimately move him.

Re: Nationals listening to offers for Chad Cordero
Well, one thing to consider is how much do they need to stock their farm? If they want them, I say let them have an A pitcher, a AA pitcher, and two of Guthrie/Davis/Slocum, as well as maybe Casey or Franklin. Make the A guy and the AA guy something like B/C prospects. These kind of deals never seem to happen but I rarely see why-overwhelming a trading partner with players seems like a strategy that might work sometimes. Maybe some live arm from A (sorry my knowledge ceases at Akron), and Bear Bay (he's still regarded as ok right?), plus Davis and Guthrie. Put Franklin on top if you have to.

Or, this just crossed my mind...JD Martin? I wouldn't be all that surprised if Martin and Guitterez alone get it done. I don't want Martin dealt though...but for a closer?
