Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?

I didn't even know we had Andy Tracy.

I was at Winter Haven today (I live about 45 minutes away in Orlando).  Right in front of me, some guy gets a phone call and then goes up to Tracy and lets him know that he has to report to Baltimore by Monday (they train in Ft. Lauderdale).  Victor and Einar were signing autographs for about 25 people in the background.

Certainly a first for me.  Present as the deal goes down!

Well, Tracy was supposed to be Buffalo's third baseman before the Indians acquired Andy Marte.

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
Confirmation:

Don't get too excited. The Orioles have acquired corner infielder Andy Tracy, 32, from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later.

Tracy broke into the majors with the Montreal Expos in 2000 and appeared in 83 games, batting .260 with 11 homers and 32 RBIs. A left-handed hitter, Tracy appeared in 16 games with the Colorado Rockies in 2004.

Last year, Tracy played in 12 games with Triple-A Colorado Springs. He'll soon report to camp here and most likely wind up in Ottawa. Only a few hours ago, I was told there was "nothing warm at the moment" regarding trades. I guess this doesn't exactly qualify as a scorcher. But we'll take it."

Of course, nothing beats having someone there as the phone call was made :)

This just proves that the cheapskate Bisons are not serious about contending in 2006.

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
Exactly. That they're willing to give the third base job to an unproven prospect means they don't want to win. Just look at their outfield...three more youngsters there!

And they let Jeff Liefer and Andy Abad, proven veterens, leave via free agency because of money. Those cheap bastards!

It just aggravates the heck out of me when businesses try to turn a profit or save it for a rainy day.  Who do they think they are?  I've got an imagination to feed, and it won't survive on Andy Tracy fantasies.

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
AP has posted the story.  Tracy spent most of last year in Japan and was signed to a Minor League contract by the Tribe in December.

In parts of three seasons with Montreal in 136 games he batted .224.

I remember reading about the Tracy signing in December and getting excited for a moment ... and then realized I was thinking about Chad Tracy.

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
I'm with you, I want to team to be in the playoffs too.  But I'm at a loss here, what should Shapiro specifically do with that money right now to make the team better to get into the playoffs?

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
A good place to put it to use, would be to sign our remaining core player to long term contracts.

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
I think that those core contracts are a given, regardless of the current-year budget position.  Meaning that when they happen, I won't be giving anyone credit for spending money there!  You have to spend money there, or you can't compete.  Look at the alternative ... $3 million for Broussard, $10 million for Soriano!

We got 11 million from the sale of the Washington Nationals?

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
When the sale if final it is expected that all major league teams will recieve 11 million from the league. With that in mind the free agent market was a little higher than normal(or would have been).

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
I don't know any of the specifics on this, but I do know that in order for the Indians - and every other mlb team - to get that "11 million," they had to first buy the Expos. What with that initial outlay, and the fact that Bud's taking his sweet time selling the team, I'm betting MLB's profit from the sale is much less than 11 million.

Re: Andy Tracy to Bal for a PTBNL?
MLB paid $120 million for the Expos.  The last number I saw was that there had been $60 million in operating losses.  I don't know what the sales price was (honestly I don't even know whether the sale has occurred) but the number I saw that MLB was looking for was $450 million.  Based on the rough numbers for operating losses and sales price doing the math results in a net per team of $9 million absent tax liability, if any.
