Book Review Portal

Baseball has been blessed with a tremendous accompanying literature, from books profiling its great players, books about the strategy of the sport, as well as books describing its rich history.

Being a baseball bibliophile, one of my long-desired projects was to create a compendium of book reviews about baseball. Given the magnitude of the output of the genre, I'm certainly not going to limit the reviews to myself; there's simply too much out there for me to get to. That's why I'd like the readers of this site to get into the act. Do you have a baseball book and want to review it? Simply post the review in a diary, and I'll transfer it to the front page.

If you want to, you can use this thread to give suggestions for future reviews, as well as simply discussing baseball books in general.

Re: Book Review Portal
Here are a couple of books I love with a more "literary" slant:

Roger Angell, editor and writer for the New Yorker, has a short piece called "The Web Of The Game," reprinted in a couple of collections of his work (I know it is in Game Time and Once More Around The Park.)  He and retired legend Smokey Joe Wood (then 92 years old) attended a now-legendary NCAA playoff game between Yale and St. John's, with Ron Darling pitching 11 no-hit innings for Yale before losing to Frank Viola and St. John's 1-0 in the 12th.  All of Angell's stuff is worth reading, but that one - the mastery of the pitching performances, the contrast between youth and experience - is one of my favorites.

I don't really like Philip Roth, but his The Great American Novel is one of the funniest books, baseball or otherwise, that I have read.  It kind of runs out of steam at the end, but it's still a hoot.

Re: Book Review Portal
Everybody should read Jim Bouton's Ball Four. Even if he is kind of a jerk, it's a really entertaining read, especially this time of year as the book starts with him going to spring training with the Seattle Pilots.

I just started Veeck As In Wrech and I cannot believe I didn't read it before now. What an unbelievably great book -- a (mostly) true autobiography in the best picaresque tradition. The guy was a totally unique American treasure. Maybe I'll write a formal review of it when I'm done.

That should be Wreck, obviously, not Wrech.

Re: Book Review Portal
I went to a panel discussion on campus just last Thursday featuring Jim Bouton.  He talked mostly about his new book, Foul Ball, about trying to save a minor league park in Pittsfield, Mass.  Basically he pitched a stadium renovation plan using private money to the city, but was opposed by a few business and political players who wanted a new stadium.  Evidentally his opponents included the carpenter's union, though they may have been used by the bigger players.

Well, the carpenter's union decided to show up and take up the whole back row, which made for some interesting questions and answers.  I though Bouton handled himself very well.  I could see where he might be painted as a jerk, but he was in the right here, in my opinion.  The same could be said for Ball Four.

I was going to talk with him, but instead got into a long conversation with Bob Trumpbour, who is writing a book called "The New Cathedrals" about stadium construction politics.
