Jacobs Field

Hey Guys,

Been reading with much interest from across the pond and I'd love to thank Jay and Ryan for all the hard work which allows me to stay up to date from over here in the UK.

I've got a question that I was hopeing someone could clear up.  I heard a few months ago that the naming rights on Jacobs Field were for 10 years and were due to be up this year.  Is this true and will the name be changing?

I'm interested because my local football (soccer) team is opening a new stadium named after an airline and I hate it, but I understand the realities of business.

Any idea who might take the rights and when?

Here's hoping it won't something as bad as Petco Park or Minute Maid Field.

By the way, the Crisp-Marte deal, not sure about it but agree risk had to be taken. I would have hated to see Marte go on to be an all-star if we hadn't got him.

Re: Jacobs Field
I think it's either after this year or next year.

Gund Arena's (home of the Cavs) rights were up last year, but the new owner bought them and re-named them after his company (Quicken Loans).

I honestly don't know what the baseball stadium will be named. Hopefully it's something tasteful.

Re: Jacobs Field

Re: Jacobs Field
I'm thinking Progressive is going to jump in on this action.  Typically it's a locally-based company that has regional/national reach or aspirations, and how many of those are there in Cleveland at this point?

Anyway, naming rights don't fundamentally change the financial picture of a team.  It's "just a few million" a year at most.  I'm bracing myself for something awful, but how much worse can it get than Minute Maid?

I think Trojan Field would make a nice name for a stadium.  Or perhaps the Ballpark at Trojan.

Re: Jacobs Field
Yeah, doesn't sound too bad, but isn't Trojan a contraceptive?  That's the kind of name that would be laughed at in our papers....although thankfully American newspapers actually report news and aren't scumbags.

Progressive would be alright I guess, not too obviously commercial.

Any idea what kinda of money they get?  My football team got £120 million (roughly $210 million) for a 10 year deal.

Re: Jacobs Field
Wow.  That is a lot of money for naming rights.  A quick search indicates that no U.S. arena has a deal that exceeds $10 million per year.  Is this because soccer is the only huge mass-market sport in the UK?  Are other sports (ie rugby) followed anywhere as closely as soccer?

Re: Jacobs Field
Football is definitely the most closely followed sport over, at least in relation to media coverage.

Other sports like rugby and cricket get popular at certain times in relation to major international tournaments but nowhere near as consistent as football.

Unfortunately baseball is a minor minor sport, which is a shame because I love the sport

Re: Jacobs Field
I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing.  Do you know what scumbag means?  http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19980429

Was that intentional?  Either way, it's pretty funny.

Re: Jacobs Field
I honestly did not know that was the intended meaning of that word. I just assumed it meant the same as "dirtbag."

I guess you learn something every day.

Re: Jacobs Field
Hahaha,

I didn't know that, but its apt when you think about the fact I brought it up in relation to the field being named after Trojans

Re: Jacobs Field
I know we're not supposed to get political on here, so I'll tread lightly here:

Are you saying that American newspapers report more actual NEWS than British newspapers? I thought it was just the opposite...

Re: Jacobs Field
I agree we shouldn't get too political, and I should probably qualify what I said about newspapers by saying my knowledge of US papers goes as far as the Ashtabula Star Beacon, the Plain Dealer and USA Today.

All those papers I have read defintely seem better then some of our tabloids which actually sell a huge amount of papers in relation to what your tabloids do.

Our biggest selling newspaper will happily splash the front page with the latest news on the latest crappy reality tv show.

Re: Jacobs Field
correct me if I'm wrong, but the Guardian and the Independent are not exactly rags, and leaps and bounds beyond USA Today (one of the worst papers ever) and the PD.

Re: Jacobs Field
I agree the Inde and the Guardian aren't rags, although they're a bit too partisan for my liking (although these days what paper isn't), however, they are nowhere near the most read newspaper in this country.

The two top selling papers are tabloids in the true sense who love nothing more than sensationalism and selling papers rather than true journalism.  This is particularly true in relation to sports reporting.

But ultimately, every market is going to have some good and some bad, I guess the ideal is to be able to identify the two.

Re: Jacobs Field
Ultimately, in every market the media will pander to the expectations of their readers and potential readers.  The day of journalistic standards arising out of principle or noble purpose is long gone.

Re: Jacobs Field
Thanks for those links, quite informative.  It's good that there is so much transparenct in your sports, something that is also lacking over here.

Must say, I'd hate to play at the Gaylord Entertainment Centre....hmmmmmm
