Sabathia out of WBC

Stay connected for news and updates

Looks like Sabathia  won't be pitching for the United States in the WBC after all.  Obviously this is good news for the Indians in 2006, though I was looking to forward to seeing him perform in the WBC.

Wow, this tournament was poorly planned.  I'm sure I will still be watching it, as there is plenty of talent involved.

Really, this is the best of all worlds for Indians fans.  Another diversion in March, but without risking our top arm.

UPDATE: Merging dgcambridge's post with mine ... [Jay] ... Sabathia expressed doubts about competing yesterday for the first time, citing concerns about letting down his Indians teammates.  A sampling of yesterday's comments:

  • "This is a big decision for me.  I would love to pitch for my country, but I want to make sure I am right.  I don't think I am in game shape yet."
  • "I felt good today, but if I was to play in this tournament and get hurt, I would be cutting the guys in this clubhouse short."
  • And today's comment:
  • "Although I would love to pitch in the inaugural World Baseball Classic and am proud to represent my country, I will not be ready to pitch in a competitive-game environment when play begins on March 7 vs. Mexico. My intention is to participate in Major League spring training camp with the Indians and be ready for my opening day start."
