WBC

I know lots of you were on the fence or flat disinterested in the WBC, but sneaking a couple of quick peeks at today's Venezuela/Dominican Republic game leaves me more convinced than ever that this is a cool thing.  The crowd was rocking, David Ortiz hit a couple of bombs, and there was some controversy on a Miguel Cabrera HR/double off the wall (umps ruled it a double, didn't see a replay to convince me they were wrong).

There were some missteps.  Johan Santana was glaring daggers at the home plate ump on some of his calls.  The max innings pitched thing is disappointing.  And I saw Tejada take a fall on a diving play at short and get up a little tender.

Still, the fans were amazing.  And the players are really into it.  How about Ichiro, "ashamed" to lose to Korea and saying "if I was satisfied with my performance, I should quit baseball?"  It probably means a lot more to the non-US players and fans, but it's fun to see passionate baseball this early in the year.
