Hello, Mr. Sowers?

"Yes, we have a job opportunity in the Cleveland area...

Well, we currently have a Mr. Johnson in the position, but quite frankly, he's just not working out.

Yes, there is some traveling required, but the pay is excellent and we do have incentive programs like Jeremy Sowers Bobble Head night.

Uh-huh, and just how quickly do you think you could get to the downtown area? We're right on Ontario Street..."

Re: Hello, Mr. Sowers?
You could be right, though I think we'll see Johnson make at least two or three more starts before he's in serious danger of losing his job. You have to figure he can't get worse (at least we hope not), and this organization is extremely patient.

Even though Sowers is 6-1 with a 1.07 ERA in nine starts, you do have to at least be somewhat concerned with the 32/17 K/BB ratio. He'll find his way to Cleveland soon, but I doubt we'll see him replace Johnson before the month is over.

Re: Hello, Mr. Sowers?
Sowers is indeed making life difficult on his AAA opponents, but do we think that will immediately translate to the majors? He needs Moyer-Glavine control and deception, and I think he will need time to adjust. It's not as if he can play crafty-lefty against teams like the Indians (who can't hit them) all the time. His K rates are low, though I think he has corrected his earlier control issues (which skew current stats). It's tough to make a living with a 85-mph fastball unless you really know your stuff, opposing hitters, etc., and that kind of success is not always immediate. Still, I think he would be an improvement over Johnson, whether he will have a difficult adjustment period or not. Still, Traber was on the cusp of having some success, and Sowers seems much more a gamer than Traber.
