Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."

Sauerbeck has apologized to his team and family. Seems like it was a pretty standard public apology, until this:

"I'm trying to do the right thing; I made a terrible error in judgment," Sauerbeck said. "It's something I'm going to have to live with the rest of my life. I'm a big boy, and I'm going to have to deal with it."

Maybe I have a kind of a sick sense of humor, and I know this is a pretty awkward situation for everyone involved, but something about a Major League pitcher describing himself as a big boy just strikes me as humorous.

As for the rest of the article, there's some new info about the situation. Apparently Scott and his lady friend had been hiding in the bushes for 45 minutes before they were found! This girl blew a .253 and likely hadn't had a drink in over an hour? Remarkable.

the most absurd thing is his ever so predictable assertion that he was trying to do the right thing. sure.

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
The PD has Sauerbeck's quote as "In trying to do the right thing I made a terrible error in judgment." Which is, after hearing about the incident, one of the more outragous statements I've heard recently. Perhaps the PD misquoted him, since your version of the quote sounds more reasonable, but raises the question: what, exactly, is the right thing he is trying to do now?

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
Yeah, now that I look at it again, it's a little unclear what he actually said. Here's what the article has him saying:

"In trying to do the right thing; I made a terrible error in judgment," Sauerbeck said. "It's something I'm going to have to life with the rest of my life. I'm a big boy, and I'm going to have to deal with it."

Maybe I should have just thrown a couple of sics in there instead of fixing their typos, but the changes I made are in bold. Obviously the life thing is a typo, but now I'm not sure if that semicolon is wrong, or the in. I sure hope he said 'I'm' since that sure makes a hell of a lot more sense. As in, by apologizing, I'm trying to do the right thing. That's what I thought was meant when I first read it.

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
It's entirely possible that Sauerbeck was even drunker than his friend, and that "in trying to do the right thing" he was letting the more sober person do the driving.

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
That was what I immediately thought when I heard about the incident.  Or simply that he was at least at some level of drunkenness, and wanted to avoid the possibility of "Sauerbeck busted for drunk driving" headlines.  Of course the headlines from what actually happened didn't turn out much better.

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
But if Sauerbeck had been busted for drunk driving, wouldn't that count as a substance abuse violation and a 50 game suspension?  That's a lot worse, when you consider the salary lost (assuming it's a suspension without pay, although given the insanely powerful MLBPA, I wouldn't be surprised if the suspension is with pay).

I'm pretty sure Miller Lite and Jack Daniels aren't considered "substances" by rule. That rule was designed to keep guys from doing steroids, cocaine, etc.

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
Also, he wasn't driving. Maybe by "doing the right thing" he meant, "making sure I don't get a DUI by making my even more drunk friend drive."

Re: Sauerbeck: "I'm a big boy..."
What is SoreBack doing with another woman at 3:45 in the morning ?  Dude is (maybe 'was') married.  Married men are not supposed to be hanging out with women other than their wives at 3:45 AM.

This kind of thing is understandable when you're in college and have almost zero responsibility.  Pulling this stunt at the age of 35 whilst married and pulling down a major league salary is just ridiculous.  It's not like this guy is Mariano Rivera.  SourBack could be pounding nails on a house framing crew very soon if he keeps these up these antics.
