Wickman Moved to Atlanta

There's the first domino to fall:

http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/pdsports/index.ssf?/mtlogs/cleve_pdsports/archives/2006_07.html#163 304

They don't list the name of the prospect, but it should be a decent one.  All the story says is that the prospect will not impact the team in 2006.
I would assume that Langerhans and/or Betemit would be named.

Re: Wickman Moved to Atlanta
According to MLB.com article:

"Ramirez was hitting .285 with nine homers and 37 RBIs at Class A Rome this year. The 21-year-old catcher established himself as a solid prospect while hitting .347 at Danville last season. His success at the rookie level led him to be named the Appalachian League's co-player of the year."

He has a .408 SLG, .449 OBP, and .285 AVG so far this season.

Um, Class A catching prospect?  That's the best we could do for a veteran closer to a team that has no closer?  I think we got ripped off a little.

Re: Wickman Moved to Atlanta
Would you give much of value for a veteran closer with an ERA over 4, who makes all of his saves like walking a tightrope and who is likely to retire at the end of the year?  Come on, be realistic about Wicky's value.  He has the heart of a bulldog, but let's be honest about his peripherals here.  They were lucky to get what they got, and Atlanta moved fast so they could get him before somebody else got him to set up.  We got their 6th best prospect according to Sickels, and that's pretty good considering the circumstances.

Ramirez, 21, was rated Atlanta's No. 20 prospect by Baseball America before this season.

Re: Wickman Moved to Atlanta
Based on what the Nationals got from the Reds for a pair of middle relievers, I thought the Indians would get more for Wickman than a Class A catcher.

I would imagine the Indians were somewhat limited by the number of teams Wickman would accept a trade to.  But if Majewski and Bray get Kearns and Lopez, I would have thought that the Indians would get someone at least close to major league ready.

This would also seem to tell me that the Indians will be lucky to get a bucket of baseballs for the rest of what is on the block.

Re: Wickman Moved to Atlanta
Shapiro said he thought this was likely to be the biggest deal he makes before the deadline.
He also positioned himself as a buyer and a seller in his press conference.

Two hot dogs and a coke, I have not seen anythink that leads me to think we are looking to spend money to make the team better for 2007.

Re: Wickman Moved to Atlanta
Probably not much major league talent before
the deadline;  however, he did unload about
$2M of salary on Atlanta, which should increase
Shapiro's flexibility.

The dollars saved are probably more important to
the Indians than the player traded for.

And how has that helped us in the past?
