Not a Braves hat and in defense of the Chief
Chapter 2 Not a Braves Hat
It amazes me that anyone that claims to a sports fan or baseball fan could not know the famous Indians hat. I mean there had been the wildly successful Major League movie and we had ESPN on cable back then but the question I faced the most wearing the Indians lid was the "Is that a Braves hat?" Could there be a worse question to ask an Indians fan? Braves? You have to be kidding me. The Braves had used the infamous Chief Knockahoma who looked like he was laughing or in pain. Other questions faced in the early 1990's: What team is that? Are you from Ohio? Is that the team from that movie? The worse response was I thought that was make believe team for the movie. Yikes! I mean we had cable. Those questions started to disappear as the Indians started winning but in the early days it could really get on your nerves.
Chapter 3 In defense of the Chief
I am going now to give my two cents worth about the controversy surrounding the Chief Wahoo logo. Let me say right off the bat that I am not a Native American. I am not in favor of truly offending anyone. However, I think the flap surrounding the logo is a little silly. Here is my argument for the Chief and the Indians organization:
a. Tradition. The current logo appeared in the 1950's. We are talking decades with Wahoo somewhere on the jersey and/or hat. Tradition means a lot in baseball and Wahoo has been there.
b. The Indians organization has shown ground breaking practices with hiring practices with Larry Doby and Frank Robinson. They are not racially insensitive. They have set the standard for other teams to follow.
c. Positive image. I mean the guy is always smiling. He never has a frown on his face. The hair is perfect. No matter how bad it gets, he is smiling. Don't we need more positive images?
d. Get a life. I mean it is logo. It is fun. It is unique. It is for a sport. A game. Fun. Remember fun?
Let me now comment on the "I" hats. I understand the "I" hats and they don't look that bad with the Wahoo sleeveless jersey but I love the Wahoo hats especially the 1950s wishbone C with Wahoo. It is my favorite hat of all time in any sport. It is the alpha and omega of hats. The "I" hats are for those who love the Indians but don't want to offend. I am not going to blast those fans because they are Tribe fans too. I can live with it as long as that does not become the only Indians hat.
