a Not so burning issue

...but nonetheless of some importance going forward. It is not "burning" because we will probably not see him in Cleveland before 2008, but I am afraid we were a bit hasty in assigning Asdrubal Cabrera a nickname, "AstroCab". It's rather ungainly, don't you think? Perhaps it was because he came into the organization unexpectedly and his name is, let's say, odd.
I think I have a better solution, one which, with its mythico-primitive sound would satisfy that urge to communal utterances, the sheer pleasure in sound lost to us with the departure of Merloni but partially regained with the acquisition of BLC.
And the solution is: Drube.
He turns a sweet DP...Drube...Droooob!

So what do we think?
Drube! Drooooob!

Re: a Not so burning issue
I was a pretty strong AstroCab advocate. It still consistently makes me laugh. I think immediately of those vans that every teacher in my middle school seemed to drive.

Re: a Not so burning issue
Agreed...it is pretty funny, but also kind of degrading in a second-rate sort of way, which your association confirms.
It also might be what the Jetson's would call their dog on the Spanish channel.

Re: a Not so burning issue
I don't see how it's degrading.  It's fun and peppy.

Re: a Not so burning issue
LOL...or at least definitely a chuckle. "fun and peppy"? Heh. Ok. AstroCab it is. And you always came across to me as wielding the rod w.r.t the less engaged. I've always appreciated your informed insight, but it appears you are more affable than you let on. I know it can get bloody serious in here.

Re: a Not so burning issue
My stance on nicknames is that they should be fun, before anything else. While A-Rod, T-Mac, etc are all functional, the nicknames that I really like are ones like The Great Bambino, Pronk, The Black Mamba (Kobe Bryant's self-invented and rarely used nickname), The Big Hurt, etc. Though a lot of those are even more difficult to say then the actual names, I still find them amusing, especially when used in a real broadcast.

Plus they open themselves up to great fan and commentator invention for signage, slogans, etc.

Re: a Not so burning issue
"Wielding the rod?"  Okay, I guess.  I am pretty affable, and I don't enjoy conflict for its own sake, not one bit.  I do enjoy a robust exchange of ideas, however, and I do see the need for a smackdown here and there.  Sometimes I'm even the one who needs it.

I do have a secret agenda of authoring as many player nicknames as I can.  I'm deeply proud of the BLC.

I don't want anything "rolling off my tongue" anywhere near "AsCab"

Re: a Not so burning issue
AstroCab makes perfect sense....if he played for Houston.

Drooooooooob.

Re: a Not so burning issue
I like "Droob"; it earns bonus points every time the announcer makes the obligatory observation, "They're not saying 'boo', they're saying 'Droob'."

Re: a Not so burning issue
Droob will never catch on.  That is a critical aspect of nickname making.

Re: a Not so burning issue
You have already admitted to having a 'secret agenda' which exposes your bias and discredits your criteria for a quality nickname.
Any more support for 'Drube' and I'm afraid I'm going to have to post a poll.
You're not running the White House.

Re: a Not so burning issue
I have no secret agenda.  I have an open agenda.  First and foremost, I'm in favor of trying to popularize catchy nicknames.  Nicknames that aren't catchy can't be popularized no matter who comes up with them.

Hmmmm.
But you should be proud of Big League Choo. That's an instant classic.
And there should be an 'edit' option on comments as well...after re-reading mine I realized it did not convey the joking intent with which it was written.

Re: a Not so burning issue
I love when an announcer has to say that (or a variation of that) whenever a player with an "oo" sound in his name is playing at home.

Re: a Not so burning issue
And so it was, that the tribe was split into factions: The Drubians vs. the AstroCabians...  all for a guy with a .632 OPS, and 14 errors in 52 games, at Buffalo.

Isn't one error per 4 games a bit high for a glove man?  (Yes, I know, fielding percentage isn't everything, but, still...)

Keep in mind he was rushed to AAA!
Hello CaptainEasy,

You make a good point about his fielding percentage, but at the same time, keep in mind that he was only 20, and by all accounts, really should have been at AA.  It's reasonable to assume he was probably focusing a great deal on his offense to try to bridge the gap between High-A (where he had solid success,) and AAA, while his defense wasn't as much of a concern or a priority because he's always shown solid defensive skills.

Also realize that he's been promoted pretty quickly for a guy who was only 20 years old this year; in 2005, at the young age of 19, he spent time at 3 levels:

192 ABs at Low-A Wisconsin
225 ABs at High-A Inland Empire
23 ABs at AAA Tacoma

I think next year will be a more telling sign on whether his defense is overrated or if he just struggled this year due to the overemphasis of trying to improve his offensive game by two levels at the young age of 20.  He should be more comfortable at AAA next year in terms of his offensive game, which should allow him to concentrate on both aspects of his game more equally.  That should give us a better idea of how good his defense really is.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: a Not so burning issue
Drube scoops in the field and Drube bloops at the plate.  As-swipes on the bases?

Re: a Not so burning issue
We're going about this all wrong.
Drube vs. AstroCab; it's all so subjective.

We need numbers.

We need to know whether other players, with similar developmental profiles, have become better players with monosyallabic nicknames, or with polysyllabic nicknames whose first two syllables remind us of a crummy minivan.

Isn't this in the BP yearbook somewhere?
