Spanning The Globe

Spanning The Globe (as they said introducing Wide World of Sports before it transformed into ESPN) I have noticed Indian fans visiting this site from London to Los Angeles, Hawaii to Texas.  At my high school reunion, someone who knew me in elementary school asked if I was still a Cleveland Indians fan.  I was stopped twice in Jerusalem while wearing a Indians hat and asked if I was from Cleveland.  I left Cleveland at 2, and have resided since then in Los Angeles.

During the last several months, I have seen many new posters and comments from first time writers.  If readers would be so kind and comment as to where they live, my curiosity will be appeased.

Okay, I gotta know.....

How could anyone not living in northern Ohio possibly adopt the Indians in the 1960s?

The Tribe did have two managers in a row from Louisiana, Joe Adcock (briefly) and Alvin Dark.

Or was it because they reminded you of the Saints?

Re: Spanning The Globe
I began listening to LSU football games on the radio with my dad at an early age.  In 1967, at age 8, I became a Saints fans when the franchise started.  About the same time, I decided to choose a baseball team to follow, but my dad never showed any interest in MLB.  I remember asking my mother what her favorite team was, but she didn't have one.  So I asked her to just name a team.  "Yankees" was the first name that popped into her head.

I knew I could never cheer for a team called the Yankees.  My great-grandparents(deep South, born in the 1890's) were still alive back then, so I'm sure that the first time I ever heard "damn Yankees", it had nothing to do with baseball.  So I asked Mom to name another team. "Indians" was the reply.

Genealogy aside:
Now, my mother is a descendant(on her mother's side) of a man named Joseph Willis who fought in the Revolutionary War with Francis Marion, "the Swamp Fox".  This man had been born to a Cherokee slave and her white owner in North Carolina.  Interracial marriages were illegal under N.C. law at the time and despite his father's wishes, the slave son could not obtain his freedom until 1787, after his father's death.  Though disinherited by his father's family, Willis would eventually move to Louisiana and become the first Baptist preacher west of the Mississippi River.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~larapide/bits/josephwillis.htm

My mother's father was at least half-Indian, but she knows little more of him.  Obviously, it was a short marriage and my grandmother did not speak much of him.

None of this family history was known to me at the time I was looking for a baseball team, however.  I simply became a Cleveland Indian fan because she named them...and they weren't the Yankees.  Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've never liked the Dallas Cowboys either.

I've never regretted being a fan of the Tribe, LSU, or the New Orleans Saints.  My LSU boys came through for me with a national championship in '03, the Saints may get a ring this year, and I KNOW the Tribe will get it done one year(or more?).  If not...so what.  They'll always be MY teams.  ;)

No.  They say there were no traces of anything harmful to humans in the area, and bird flu and West Nile were ruled out.

For now they are assuming the birds were poisoned.   They sent some birds off to be autopsied(!) to confirm it.  Exterminators are allowed to kill certain species, or it could have been a prank or an accident.

They've got to root for the Tribe.  The Browns are a little bit more of a tortured issue.  I thought about abandoning my Browns fan status this year in favor of another team, but realized I wouldn't really care about any other team.  So it was the Browns or nothing.  I'm sticking with the Browns, although damn it's been painful for the last, oh, 15 years or so.

Euclid until I was 12 in 1959. Then Chicago and all over the country. Long time in Miami. Just east of Tallahassee the last few years.

In 1969, I was taking a summer Chem class at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Long-haired, hippie-type, smart guy in class and I did not like him at all.

One morning I'm in the library and he's there, reading a newspaper. I said, "What? No chem book this morning?"

He says, "Not now. I gotta read the box score of the Indians' game last night."

Suddenly I loved the guy. We are sick people.

Re: Spanning The Globe
London, England born and bred to Colombian parents.

Picked up the tribe bug from my wife who took me to my first game in the Skydome in Toronto.  She's from Ashtabula and whenever we go back to visit the family we squeeze a game in at the Jake; even this past summer when we were over to get married.

Bad thing about being a Colombian is that the only reason they know the tribe over there is because of Renteria's contribution for the Marlins in '97, made him a national hero.

Cheers, I wish though...although my wife probably wouldn't.  There was actually a competition on the indians website last year giving away a wedding at the Jake and I was tempted to enter but I was told in no uncertain terms it wouldn't be appreciated!

Re: Spanning The Globe
Grew up in a little town in Va, moved to Cleveland for high school. Lots of family roots in Cleveland, and my old man is a life long Tribe fanatic. After college, lived in Philly for a while, Manhattan for a long time and Maryland for almost a long time.  Also have a house in Princeton, which I bought along the way and never got rid of.  My wife likes it there.  Dislike the Browns, mostly because they haven't ever had a whole good game, only minutes, and I can't take it.  Somehow the Indians travails don't bother me as much, if at all.  Odd, really.

The improbability of this is staggering. Waynesboro had, when I lived there, maybe 17,000 residents many of whom had lived in the area their whole life.

Plus the guy like one up or whatever lives in Harrisonburg, which is 30 minutes away. It's really pretty unbelievable.

Born on the east side of Cleveland, grew up on the west side (Bay Village). I've lived in Chicago for the past 7 years after going to school in DC and a brief sojourn in Portland, OR. There's a hell of a lot of young people from Cleveland here in Chicago; it's kind of sad really. Whenever the Indians are in town you see a lot of tribe gear around.

Grew up in Geauga County till I was 18, went to college in Columbus & stayed there for about 7 years, and now have been in Philly for almost a year. While I still love the Indians, the opportunity to root for an actual well-run contending team in football has been too much & I have gone over to the dark side of Eagles fandom.

I live in Bedwas, Wales in the UK - (Bedwas is about 4 miles from Tom Jones' birthplace - he was once bottled off at my local club in the early sixties).
I have followed the tribe since 1997 when sunday night baseball was first shown in the UK. I take my family to watch the Tribe in St. Pete every year and can't wait for August!

Go tribe!

Belgium since '91. Grew up in Toledo (family still there, & in Cleveland), university in Boston, work in San Diego and Chicago (1 year each). Yep...basically missed out on the glorious 90's. Tribe on the radio in the 1970's still etched in memory. Have never been colder than in the old stadium in April.

Re: Spanning The Globe
Only stadium colder than Municipal was an afternoon game at Candlestick. The onshore breeze in summertime is bitter cold. Night games actually feel warmer (even though they aren't). The move to PacBell/AT&T/SBC was well needed like the Jake.

Re: Spanning The Globe
I'll take your word on that, but I would guess there would at least have been a few people there to block the wind at Candlestick. No such luck at Municipal.

Re: Spanning The Globe
Actually, for quite a few years there were very few fans that went to the Stick. When the Giants weren't in contention, they were lucky to get 10k+ in the stadium as well. Not as bad as Municipal, but still pretty bad.

The years they did well, they'd get closer to 20/25k, but never really packed them in. It IS a horrrible stadium to this day. The Niners hate it there (ergo the move to Santa Clara in 2012).

Re: Spanning The Globe
Originally from Stark County,OH. Lived there for most of 34 years, (although I lived briefly in Hickory,NC back in'93), but all they talked about there was NASCAR.

Decided it was too cold during the Ohio winters so I relocated to Sarasota, FL 4 1/2 years ago.

BTW, it's about 72 degrees right now with clear blue skies on this lovely January day.

I walk to the Reds spring training games from my house and take in a lot of Tribe games during the spring in Winter Haven, Dunedin, Kissimmee, St. Pete, Orlando, etc...

Born and raised in Sacramento, but an Indians fan since I was a kid.  Nobody in my family was a big Giants fan and the A's came to Oakland from KC in 1967.  My baseball heroes were Sudden Sam and Luis Tiant, and I just stuck with the Tribe.  My older brother was a Tiger fan (Al Kaline) and my younger brother (now in LA) a Red Sox fan (Yaz, Rico Petrocelli, and Tony C.).

Born in England, moved to the Baltimore area when I was four.  Went to law school in Cleveland.  Now I live in NYC.  Like others, I inherited the Cleveland sports curse from my father.  My parents now live in the greater Cleveland area.

I have never been to Indonesia, but one day, I may just have to go, but only after a further complex review of their immigration and nationality laws and regulations.
