Front Office News from Elsewhere

A couple of recent items of interest, and at least tangential connection to the Tribe, from the land of the NL East.

PHILADELPHIA--The Phillies extend Charlie Manuel's contract through 2009 (with a club option for 2010) and pledge to increase payroll beyond the $100 million threshold.

ATLANTA--John Schuerholz announces his retirement as Braves GM.  During his tenure the Braves won 14 NL East pennants, but only hoisted the championship trophy once--I need not remind you when.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
Granted, Cholly didn't have a lot of starting pitching to work with, but how does that guy keep his job?

We'll see Schuerholz in the HoF.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
Charlie has led a very charmed managerial career.
Not because of winning, but because he is able to land/keep jobs that he has no reason owning.

If Charlie were on Sprockets, he would probably get to touch the monkey.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
Charlie keeps his job primarily because everyone in Philadelphia and their mother knew he didn't have much starting pitching to work with and he went to the playoffs anyway.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
I'm terrified of the Angels firing their dumbass GM Stoneman. If they even giggle in Antonetti's direction, they will be execute.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
I don't think they're going to fire Stoneman anytime soon.  The real one to worry about is hitting coach Mickey Hatcher, who apparently is great with swing mechanics but also chastises hitters for being selective.  If they had Shelton, they really might score 100 more runs per season, because they have lots of raw talent.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
There are too many GM jobs opening up, and not enough Cleveland guys to go around.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
Yes, all these GM openings worry me....if these other franchises really realize how good the Cleveland front office is, our talent up there is going to be gutted before long.  And the more teams there are doing things the Shapiro Way, the smaller the edge the Tribe has.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
While I understand the concern about guys wanting to do things "the Shapiro Way" (whatever it is exactly), I would think that the guys who have worked under Shapiro (and/or guys like Beane, for that matter) would prefer to step out of their former boss's shadow and do things their way.  Granted, they're likely to incorporate some of what they learned under their predecessor, but their success would likely hinge more on coming up with their own method rather than copying an existing method that has shown some success, yet has not yet achieved the ultimate goal.

Re: Front Office News from Elsewhere
While I share this concern in general, there doesn't appear to be reason to worry about losing anyone to the Braves.  It appears that Atlanta assistant GM Frank Wren will become the new GM, with Schuerholz becoming the team president.  Wren formerly served as GM of the Baltimore Orioles, which, unless it was in the mid-1960s, could hardly be considered a plus on his resume.

Here's a guy who left the Indians FO under John Hart to work in the hinderlands.  He seems to be doing all right.

Good interview, one I hadn't seen before.  I appreciate the love fest (that isn't even a question) from Neyer in regards to Shapiro.

Here's another front office news item, one that I frankly admit makes me physically ill:

Buddy Bell to the White Sox

I was really hoping that Buddy would return to the Tribe in some capacity.  Oy vey.

This seems as good a diary as any to post this article:

Did you realize that 3 of the 4 remaining postseason GMs all worked under John Hart in Cleveland? Amazing!

Wow! Quite a factory Hart was running up there.

I'm glad Shapiro values pitching a hair more than his mentor.

They are certainly.  I bet if we offered a prospect or two we could get Gutherie back.
