Gagne still scares me.  I saw one game in LA when he was "Gagne," and when he came in in the 9th with a 1 run lead, the Dodgers put up a zero in the top of the ninth, an "X" in the bottom, and a FINAL on the scoreboard.  He retired the side of 5 pitches.  It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen.

CLEVELAND--Former Yankee David Dellucci, 34, was found dead in the dugout of Jacobs Field this evening.  Dellucci's partially decomposed remains were found by a groundskeeper who was preparing the stadium for Monday night's scheduled American League Championship Series game between Dellucci's current team, the Cleveland Indians, and the Boston Red Sox.  Preliminary indications are that Dellucci has been dead for approximately 3 months, leading many to question why nobody on the Indians' staff noticed his absence--or his remains.

Asked to comment, Cleveland field manager Eric Wedge was reported to have said "Woo hoo, Trot, way to go, buddy!  Way to fuck up Fiddlesticks' overlong, unfunny post!"

Coming online, away from TV, to say WHAT A GAME.  TV commentators naming Nixon aside, Mastny is easily & by far the player of the game.  Our no-name pitcher did what our 3 top superstar pitchers CC, Fausto, & Raffy-L could not do -- sat down their best 3 hitters 1-2-3.  And once he did that & Gagne walked out the conclusion was forgone, it was just a question of how.  The way it happened was sweet and Nixon came through in the clutch and all, but Mastny did the great deed that made it possible.  And I hope gave some confidence / inspiration to our pitchers that it can be done.

I am very happy for Trot and Tom. Seriously.

I am also beyond overjoyed, at least for now. For a while earlier, I was despairing that there was not a single pitcher we could throw at the Sox who they wouldn't light up, and man was it ever a lift to realize this was not the case.

Sleep time for me. Have to work tomorrow. Blah.

Nice spending the game with you guys, and let's go Tribe!!!

"Great Indonesia"

Indonesia my native land, the land where I shed my blood.
There I stand, being a soldier of my mother. (Note: "mother" here refers to ibu pertiwi which means 'motherland')
Indonesia my nationality, my nation and my country.
Let us exclaim "United Indonesia!"
Live my land, live my state,
My nation, my people, all.
Build its spirit, build its bodies
For Great Indonesia!

CHORUS:
Great Indonesia, independent and free,
My land, my country, which I love.
Great Indonesia, independent and free,
Live Great Indonesia! (*2)

Indonesia, an eminent country, our wealthy country.
There we shall be forever.
Indonesia, the country of our ancestors, a relic of all of us.
Let us pray for Indonesia's prosperity.
May her soil be fertile and spirited her soul,
The nation and all the people.
Conscious be her heart and her mind
For Indonesia the Great!

CHORUS

Indonesia, a sacred country, our victorious country.
There we stand, guarding our true Mother.
Indonesia, a beaming country, a country we love with all our heart.
Let's make a vow, "Indonesia be there forever!"
Blessed be her people and her sons,
All her islands, and her seas.
Fast be the country's progress and the progress of her youth
For Indonesia the Great!.

Betancourt & Mastny: The sickest pitching I have seen since, say, Monday in the Bronx.

Seriously, what those two guys did was nothing short of miraculous. Admit it, we all were expecting the worst when mastny came in.  I agreed with Wedge he was the right pitcher in the situation but I had almost no hope. Cmon, it was Ortiz, Manny & Lowell.  1-2-3. Awesome.  That gave us a little lift goign into the 11th knowing we were done with Papelbon.

Who knew we would score 7 runs, but after that trotter hit and the wild pitch, Wedge was looking awfully smart yet again, saving Borowski.

Now Joe has pitched ok in two non pressure situations which hopefully bodes well for the next few games.

Great win! :-)
Hello everyone,

Great win - great team play by all (or most at least, outside of tough nights by Carmona, Perez, and Blake.)

I loved reading all your comments as well - many of them hilarious - great job!  :-)

I especially liked Betancourt's tought pitching on both Ramirez and Youkilis, getting both of them after long at-bats.  I also especially liked Mastny shutting down Ortiz-Ramirez-Lowell 1-2-3, just like that.

And then, Trot getting the clutch, gritty hit and Gutierrez getting the 3-run no-doubt HR, the one where Manny and Coco just stop and look up at it, wondering how far it would go (if not for the Volvo sign, it might have left Fenway entirely.)

I'm very happy we got the split - I hope we can take 3 from them here at the Jake, or at the very least, 2/3.  Hopefully, CC, Carmona, Perez, and Blake will rebound in the coming days and the rest will keep it going as they are right now.

Let's Go Tribe!  :-)

If there is a positive that CC and Fausto can take away from this game it is this: they do not have to feel they carry the weight of the team on their shoulders.  I really think that all of the talk about CC and Fausto as the only reasons the Indians had a chance of beating the Red Sox got to be too much for them.

They performed poorly and yet the Indians came away with a split.  I am expecting them to bounce back with more relaxed and focused outings next time.

Re: Game Thread: October 13, 2007 - Part III
ESPN.com article

As for Schilling, he was entrusted with a 3-1 lead only to surrender a three-run homer to Jhonny Peralta and a solo shot to Grady Sizemore. Schilling lasted only 4 2/3 innings in the second shortest postseason start of his career, and he was so disgusted with his performance that he walked into the interview room unannounced to take responsibility.

You got the sense that being a stand-up guy was somehow therapeutic for him.

"Everything about this one falls on me," Schilling said. "This was all about me coming up small in a big game."

----------------

This is vintage Schilling - the story is about how he sucked just as bad as Carmona, when Boston was  counting on him showing up with his bloody sock, and he knows that. So instead of letting the story be negative, he does this shit and turns the story so that it's about what a stand-up great guy he is for taking responsibility for sucking, etc.

Sorry Curt - your ego-mania is fairly transparent to most, and at the end of the day, you and your 1 point blah blah postseason ERA got your ass kicked by JHonny ("Is that an H?") Peralta, Grady Sizemore and the Cleveland Indians 'pen.  Oh, and there was some Trot mixed in there.

Go Tribe!  Rollin'...

Yep, for Curt this is a one-man game and he must always be that man.  And the media is there to eat it up.

I always thought the Phillies would welcome him back next season, but I don't think the city would have any patience for Schilling.

Exactly. I was just saying the other day that Schilling was like Clemens only still packing some talent and a possibly even larger ego. Even if we'd come up short in the end last night, knocking him around on the ballfield was mighty sweet.

Re: Game Thread: October 13, 2007 - Part III
I don't see it that way.  It's true that Schilling is comfortable in front of a mic, to say the least, but this is a team-first move.  He wants to take the heat off the other 24 guys, in the media and possibly in their own minds, because those other 24 guys are the ones who have to win the next three games.

It's not his fault if the media wants the story to be "Curt is a swell guy."

by Jay on Oct 14, 2007 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: October 13, 2007 - Part III
I agree that the other guys have to win games without Curt, but I don't believe this move was team-first.  To me, team-first would have been sitting at the locker and taking blame for not getting it done when the team needed him (and they had the Indians in a nice hole, with Carmona struggling).

I feel that Curt running unprompted into the interview room to take responsibility is a self-interested ploy to deflect criticism from his crappy performance and focus that he's a "swell guy" who is willing to take one for the team.

I know a few Sox fans in Boston and each of them cannot stand Schilling because of stuff like this where he is putting himself in as the main story.  I'm pretty sure the "Nation" would rather have Dave Roberts back in 2008 than Schilling, if they had their pick of '04 heroes.

And regardless of any of that - I think Gagne running away without facing media at all kind of seals the deal that he is done for the Series.  I'm sensing a "misdiagnosed lens prescription" that throws him on the DL for game 3, and the Red Sox bring on Julian Tavarez to play the goat in the deciding game six.

by steincat on Oct 14, 2007 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: October 13, 2007 - Part III
PS.

The reason I think the media is so keen to make the story "Curt is a swell guy" is because they are scared of this Indians team now.  Manny and Papi are setting records left and right, and they still lost... the East Coast machine doesn't want to analyze too much to realize that the dropoff from Game 2 starter to Game 3 starter is a long way for BOTH teams, not just the Indians.  Dice-K has been done for a month, and now they have one less reliever to throw in because Gagne is a basketcase.

Re: Game Thread: October 13, 2007 - Part III
Sorry, steincat, but you're just hating on the guy.

Taking responsibility is the right thing to do.  Even if you suspect he has other motives for doing it, you can't blame a guy for doing the right thing.  I mean, that's just stupid.  Should he do the wrong thing, out of concern for whether doing the right thing will make him look bad?

If you're gonna judge a guy, you can't make it so that no matter what he does, he's wrong anyway, just because you don't like him.

I haven't seen much media in the locker rooms in the postseason, probably because there isn't room there for all the reporters.  That's why there've been prompt press conferences after every game.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/10/14/this_time_schilling_fails_to_delive r_goods/

After watching the interview, I still question his sincerity in taking the blame.  That seems to be the issue at hand.  Sure, he did the responsible and honorable thing, but he admitted to only one mistake - the pitch to Garko.  He thought the pitch to Peralta was good and Martinez's hit was something that "found the hole."  In fact, he thought the pitch to Jhonny was a good one.

The honestly honorable thing for him to say would be "Hey, I'm old and playing in a young man's sport.  I have to work a lot harder if I expect to avoid what happened in that game..."

If there is someone that can do it, it's Schilling.  He still has it in him.  BUT, if he doesn't figure out that it is his 91 mph fastball and creampuff splitter, so much the better for the Indians.
