Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3

For Game 3, I think Gomez should start at second base and Nixon in the outfield. Gutierrez's 3 run homer in the 11th aside, he really struggled through Game 1 and the first 9 innings of Game 2. I think Nixon deserves a start. If the experiment fails and we need Franklin's defense in RF, we can always put  him in. Astrocab has been scuffling at the plate as well and I'd like to see what the veteran Gomez can do. But if it comes down to Astrocab and Barfield, then I go with Astrocab.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
Gomez at second is silly. Cabrera would be doing beter if he wasn't Wedge's bunt bitch for some reason.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
It's been interesting reading the posts for lineup concerns/changes for game #3. No offense to anyone who made suggested changes, but I don't think I would change a starting line-up that scored 12 of the 13 runs last night (unless someone had unbelievable numbers against DiceK, but even then I would probably stick with last night's line-up).

1.) I would keep Gutz in right. I think using Nixon as a pinch hitter in the clutch is the best role for him. Plus, I believe Gutz defense and speed will pay big dividends as this series progresses.

2.) As for Gomez, he hasn't played in two weeks and he is not nearly as good defensively as Astrocab. I'm willing to give up some offense especially when Westbrook (a ground ball pitcher) is going to need that defense for ground balls and turning double plays.

I know some people are thinking that the rest of the series will be a slugfest, so I understand why people want to change the lineup to maximize the offense. With that said, I don't think the high scoring games will continue for two reasons: the umpire's strike zone last night was as small as a pea and as the weather continues to cool off, runs will be at a premium. I would prefer to keep a better defensive team on the field in a tight low scoring affair and take my chances with Gutz and Astrocab at the plate.

On a positive note, the Indians took Boston's best offensive punches in the first two games and still walked out with a split. I think that will give us momentum going into game #3.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
LOL.  Please first examine Gomez's age, career OPS, and OPS since joining the Tribe (.599!)

Astro has impressed me this postseason.  Why?  Well, he's so friggin' young and he's gone through some wretched at bats, but yet he has delivered some seriously large hits.  And he has a very large offensive upside.

Defensively, just go back and watch Astro turn the double play in the fifth inning.  Sick sick sick sick sick.

Off the ledge, everyone.  Fleerdon summed Gutierrez up best: he has the potential to do things offensively that neither Nixon nor Michaels can do, and he is nearly an eltie defender already.

Check out Gutz's home/road splits from mlb.com

H: 45G .313/.357/.617
R: 44G .224/.282/.343

Add in his defense and I don't think you can take him out of the lineup.

Doesn't this diary belong in the intentional overreactions thread?

Looks like someone still has a hard-on from the TBS/inaccuracies diary.

And yes, the original post is far-fetched, but no need to rip the guy's entire body of work.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
What leads you to believe that Eric Wedge is going to do ANYTHING different than he has since August. Especially in concerns with the lineup.

I've been saying this since the last series. The Shapiro/Wedge tandem is not going to be like Mike Hargrove and start making wierd playoff moves based on hunches.

They will not repeat the past .. they already lived it.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
Or like Torre?

It would not be weird to see Trot get a start against a tough right-hander with one of our groundballers on the mound.  Of course, it seems like that would have been last night, but my guess is that Wedge just didn't want Trot out there in Fenway's big right field.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
Nixon for Gutz makes sense tomorrow with Westbrook on the mound.  Besides his homerun (which was against a lefty), Gutz has looked pretty terrible at the plate.  Nixon starting would give a little more punch, he has hit well in the playoffs (I know, in something like 4 AB's) and adds all that wonderful grit.  Gutz comes in sometime by the 7th: as a pinch hitter if a lefty comes in to face Nixon, a pinch runner if Nixon gets on base, or a defensive replacement if we have the lead.  That seems to maximize Gutz's strengths and limit his weaknesses.

Re: Start Gomez and Nixon in Game 3
Well, Monday would be the single most reasonable time to sit Gutz.  As bad as Matz has been, he throws like 16 pitches, and most of them have a lot of movement.  Gutz does not handle movement well.

Suddenly Wedge's in game aura of "chill doodz" makes total sense.
