Who would you want up?

A little pre-game humor from Curtis Granderson's ESPN chat today

Pete C (Newark De): Down by one, two men on, two outs , bottom of the ninth, who in the game today would you like to see up?

Curtis Granderson: Hitting-wise, I'll say Victory Martinez or Casey Blake (out of the two teams playing today). Those guys always seem to come up big with the game on the line.

I'm sure all Indians fans echo this sentiment.  Casey Blake is definitely the guy I want up.

Re: Who would you want up?
I have really enjoyed Granderson, both his blog on ESPN.com and his analysis on TBS and ESPN. That said...LOBlake is not who I want up with the game on the line. Unless it's September and we need a walk-off home run.

Re: Who would you want up?
Maybe "Casey Blake" is a common misspelling of "David Ortiz" or "Manny Ramirez?"

Re: Who would you want up?
"Grandy" really does have a future in TV. He's smart, has a lot of charisma, and knows how to speak about the game.

That walkoff shot Blake hit against DET must have really stayed with him!

I hope we get to see him in the studio every October for the next few years!

Really?
Casey in 2007

None On - (.308/.382/.517)
Runners On - (.227/.289/.344)
Scoring Position - (.190/.271/.294)
RISP/2 Out - (.163/.226/.302)

Superman : Kryptonite = Blake : Runners on base

Plus, it seems like the closer the runners are to scoring, he gets worse!

Casey is golden with no one on! Remember those two walk off dingers (vs. KC and then DET) in September? No one on.

Re: Who would you want up?
Sample of Casey's last few years with runners on....

2006 - (.242/.329/.379)
2005 - (.192/.250/.308)
2004 - (.261/.343/.426) not shabby!
2003 - (.239/.291/.404)

Re: Who would you want up?
I try to keep telling myself that his RISP numbers are anomalies.

But wow.

Re: Who would you want up?
i swear, man, i've had a feeling -- a really strong feeling -- since the start of game 2 that casey is going to get a very big hit before it's all said and done.

i know it's crazy, and i'm (almost) sure it's wrong.  and, even if he did, he would just be statistically due (even given his risp stats, etc).

but i cannot shake it.

i don't want to alarm y'all, but i think it's time to pump out some glitter.

Re: Who would you want up?
Was he including Ortiz in the choice?

I'm not an Insider so can't read the blog.

Re: Who would you want up?
Well, his response states "of the two teams playing today," so I assume he was.

But even if he wasn't...

Re: Who would you want up?
LOBLAKE?

He has had some big hits this year...But the numbers say it all. I agree with Vic, what about Pronk, K-Love, Astrocab, JP, Grady, not in that order necessarily, but good God, send Curtis a link to LGT where he can see Casey's nickname among the masses.

Re: Who would you want up?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Blake had 3 big home runs against the Tigers this year. One was a walk off. One was the game Fausto started on Sunday night baseball after he just missed one foul. I am pretty sure there was a third in June at some point in extra innings.

Re: Who would you want up?
It seems that many players and media have a short-term memory, and they recall two walk-offs by Casey in four days.

Bert Blyleven also declared that the Sox would have to prevent Casey Blake from getting the big hit if Boston were to win this series.

Re: Who would you want up?
Apparently Casey Blake wasn't such a bad choice.

Re: Who would you want up?
To be fair (and, well, unfair to Casey), he hit that with no runners on and no outs in the 5th.

The question asked down by one, two men on, two outs, bottom of the ninth.

You know Selig? Ombudsman.
