2nd GAME THREAD

Have to bail out CC again but the damage is not as severe as Game 1. It is still a one mistake and we're tied/in the lead game so I will take it.

Maybe Lofton can fire up this team.

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
C.C problem has been fastball command and that is what he is relying on with the middle of the lineup.  He still needs to work on fastball command.  If he was in better shape he wouldn't tire on the fastball diet he is serving up.  He would have better command and be a much better pitcher.  Instead of a 3 something era it could be in the low 2's.  Until he makes a commitment to physical fitness he will continue to be what he is.  He could be so much more which is sad because he could be dominate.  I would love to show this guy how to work out and what a real athlete does to prepare for the season.  Its sad that some one being paid like he is doesn't have the discipline to eat healthy and work on his core body.  Those that fail themselves fail their teams.

Yeah, I think letting a starter who is a potential 20 game winner go because of rough starts in the ALCS makes perfect sense.  The same bizarro reasoning will justify the Yankees in letting the AL MVP sign with another team.

Was a shutout a minimum requirement for CC to maintain his status?  Because unless he threw a shutout the Indians would still be losing.

How can't we blame Wedge for this one?  I am not afraid to call players or managers out.  I am sure Wedge would say he stayed with C.C to long.  I am pissed because I wanted this game bad and I could see early C.C didn't have it ONCE AGAIN.  I wish I would have been wrong but I wasn't.  When I say we are going to win game we do and when I see our SP blow chucks I say it.  I played the game my whole life, I can see things happening that regular people can't.  If you want to wine about it go ahead but I am rarely wrong in the general sense.  I still feel like we will win this Series but in game 7, as Schilling is going to pitch a gem. Carmona will be better but not good enough.  However, Dice K will throw up all over himself and Westbrook will battle and our bullpen will save us again to go to the Series.

Ok, contrarian genius?

Why is it that everone could easily, sanely, and confidently say "this is going to 6 or 7" before it all began, and then when something happens to make it go 6 or 7 everyone loses it?

Do you not realize how many lucky breaks, seeing-eye grounders, sox hangers, balls hit right to tribe fielders, and other assorted things that lead to the tribe's wins in games 2, 3, and 4?

Sometimes the decisions and bounces go your way, sometimes they don't.  Tonight they didn't -- against Beckett of all people, imagine that.

Trouble with CC?  Uh, we're all aware.
Nervous about heading back to Boston? I'd say.
Worried about Raffy L's head, the pressure on Carmona, and Hafner's swing? check.  check. check.

This is post-season baseball.  Get over it.  And get ready for Game 6.

I'm not surprised this would go 6 or 7. It's hard to believe you could take 4 out of 5 from a team who also won 96 games.

I just wish CC wouldn't (almost) shit the bed in every postseason start.

It was a toss-up because the ball originally
was headed to CF, but had some slice to it, making it closer to Gutz, but by the time he started closing in on it, Grady was already running towards him, which essentially made it impossible for Gutz to close in on that ball.

Unfortunately, Gutz's presence nearby caused Grady to hesitate for a second, and that in my opinion was the difference between him catching that ball and that ball going off his glove for a 3B.

If that ball is caught, we likely are down no worse than 3-1 (maybe 2-1 if we strand Pedroia at 3B.)  Who knows how the game turns out from there.

No, I gotta disagree with where this thread is going.  Give CC more credit than this, and look at the game standing on it's own.  Looking at this game in it's own light, without considering the last two games CC started, an objective voice would say that he gutted it out and put his team in a position to win -- against the best pitcher on the opposing staff.  Isn't that what you ask for from the ace of your staff, on any given start?

I understand your point, but...
I think more expected us for CC to be the dominating self he's shown he can be on numerous occasions this season, especially given the circumstances tonight.

Hello Casey,

Like I said, I think CC's outing in Game 5 was better than it was in Game 1, and he DID give us a reasonable chance to win this game, but I still think it was a tad disappointing in the sense that he didn't have many easy innings, as he only retired the Red Sox in order once (in the 6th - Varitek/Crisp/Lugo.)

Admittedly, I think we all knew CC would have to be on the top of his game to match or beat Beckett, and while he was better, he still wasn't at Beckett's level, which is what I think most of us were hoping for.

In CC's defense, however, I thought Wedge should have taken CC out after 6 IP, especially since he had his first 1-2-3 inning (finish on a high note) and was over 100 pitches.  I would have gone with Lewis, especially with Pedroia and Youkilis up - then, if you wanted to bring in Perez to face Ortiz, that's what I would have done.  Too often in this game, the Red Sox were hitting the ball the other way off CC, and that might be one minor complaint I had with CC's pitching - he didn't seem to come inside enough to knock hitters off the plate.  I know I would try to knock Manny off the plate to make him less comfortable against CC.

So, while I think CC did a reasonable/manageable job to give us a chance to win this game, I still thought and hoped he would do better (i.e. dominate more and be closer to matching Beckett.)

I admit, I probably had my expectations a bit too high - while I'm a bit disappointed with CC's outing, and moreso, the result of the game, I'm more disappointed that Pronk's bat has disappeared again, and sabotaged our best chance to do major damage against Beckett - if we put 2-3+ runs on the board, who knows if Beckett settles in like he did, and Victor did get a hit after that DP, so Beckett was ripe for a big inning if Hafner gets a hit, a walk, even a sacrifice fly.  Arguably, that might have been the most disappointing part of this night - wasting a chance to get to Beckett for a big inning early.  That too might have helped CC settle in and have a more dominating outing if he had had an early lead to work with.

Just my 2 cents - no offense.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
Problem is that he wasn't good.  He was lucky, and he got hitters to get themselves out.  He was off his game all night, his pitch count was way up, and a guy with his numbers and stuff shouldn't be waiting for Julio Lugo or Coco Crisp to hit into a double-plays with the bases loaded.

And there's no reason to look at this game in a vacuum for C.C.'s benefit any more than there is to look at one good Trot Nixon game in a vacuum.  If you play poorly in a game, that's bad; if you string together multiple games playing poorly, that's worse.  And he's stunk in 3 out of 3 postseason starts.

by maledicta on Oct 19, 2007 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed - he's arguably been the worst
Indians' starter in the postseason; Carmona is 1/2 in dominating starts, and while Westbrook and Byrd won't wow you with stuff, they did a better job containing this Red Sox lineup than Sabathia did.

What really disappointed me about Sabathia's outing were:

  1. He didn't pitch inside enough and knock them off the plate (especially Manny, who seems to own Sabathia); that's why guys like Pedroia and Kielty were able to go the other way on him so easily.

  2. He still seemed to overthrow at times - while his extra velocity (even reaching 99 on at least one pitch) did help to get the Red Sox out upstairs, it seems to me he's getting away from what made him successful and a Cy Young candidate this year.  It's disappointing because Sabathia just watched Westbrook and Byrd use pinpoint velocity and average to slightly above-average velocity to shut down this Red Sox lineup.

Sabathia, without overthrowing, would still have more velocity on his pitches than Byrd or Westbrook (I'd say 92-94, maybe 95 MPH, without overthrowing) - if he just locates it and pitches inside a little more frequently, I can't see why he couldn't have put up an outing more similar to Beckett's, and really, fairly or unfairly, that's what you expect from your ace who's an experienced pitcher and who had his best season of his career by utilizing that formula.

To me, it seemed like Sabathia still was going away from that formula, not doing enough of the things he did during the regular season in this start tonight.  I don't recall Sabathia overthrowing in his 1-0 shutout loss to the Red Sox in July - to me, I still think the postseason atmosphere and his matchup with opposing Cy Young candidate Josh Beckett was still playing a bit on Sabathia, where Sabathia tried to match him in the same fashion, but couldn't because Sabathia doesn't really dominate in the same fashion - Beckett dominates with a lot of Ks; CC dominates more by getting opponents to mishit the ball, along with a few Ks.

Like I said, it was a decent outing by Sabathia and a better performance than in Game 1, but still came up a little short in terms of what I thought he would do tonight.

Just my 2 cents - no offense.

Go Tribe! :-)

I personally thought CC would do more, and
so did the AP recap, as they called Sabathia's outing "sub-par."

In my opinion, CC "managed," to moreless contain the Red Sox, but didn't "dominate" them like I think many thought he would on this night.

Sabathia is now 0/3 in dominating starts, while Carmona is 1/2.  Even Westbrook and Byrd have contained the Red Sox better than Sabathia has, and Byrd also held the Yankees in check in Game 4 of the ALDS, albeit giving up a lot of baserunners.  That has to be a little concerning going forward in regards to Sabathia delivering when the stakes are this high.  Let's hope he gets another shot in the WS and can deliver a dominating performance or two.

Just my 2 cents.

Like I said, I don't think CC himself is solely
to blame - I'm most disappointed in Hafner's lack of production and lack of quality of ABs, striking out 4 times in a game started by a knuckleballer and sabotaging a potential big inning with a poor AB (chasing that low curveball - I think that was the pitch) and DP against a pitcher he's had success against in the past, along with 2 more Ks.

So, I agree CC wasn't the only one to not perform up to expectations tonight.

I hope they bounce back strong in Game 6 and win the ALCS - go Tribe!  :-)

Thoughts on Game 5!
Hello everyone,

Disappointing loss tonight - I was hopeful CC would come out with a dominating performance and match or outdo Beckett.  Though CC was better than he was in Game 1, I still thought he'd be a little more dominating than he was; I was hopeful he'd get through that 1st inning 1-2-3, but that didn't happen, and was fortunate to get through it with just 1 run scored.  Sabathia more managed than dominated, which did give us a chance to win, but I think most of us probably thought he would go out and finally give us a dominating performance like you'd expect an ace to give you this time of year, especially after he hadn't done that in his previous 2 postseason outings.

Personally, I would have taken CC out after 6 innings and had gone to the bullpen (Lewis probably would have been my choice); I thought Wedge was going to go to the bullpen to start the 7th, since CC was over 100 pitches and didn't have many easy innings, but didn't - unfortunately, in this instance, Wedge sticking longer with CC backfired, as Pedroia got that inning started.

As for the Indians' offense, they had a few chances against Beckett, but couldn't fully capitalize.  I think the biggest blow was in the 1st inning when Hafner hit into the DP, which scored a run, but really took the chance of a big inning out of play.  If he gets a hit there (anywhere from a single to a 3-run HR) or even a walk, who knows how the rest of the night goes.

Arguably, his disappearance from this series has been really disappointing - by his play, I wouldn't even be sure he had played in any games other than Game 1 when he hit that HR off Beckett, being that's he only had 2 hits since that HR in Game 1.

Sizemore had also disappeared in this series to a lesser extent, though he bounced back offensively tonight.  Unfortunately, his hesitation on that play in the OF was really costly, as I think he would have come up with that ball otherwise.  One of my friends thought Gutz should have gone more for that ball, but that would be hard to do if Sizemore is coming right at you and it seemed Sizemore had a beat on it, but noticed Gutierrez out of the corner of his eye and hesitated - if he wouldn't have hesitated, I think he makes that catch.  Then, at most, Boston probably only gets 1 run, and 3-1 would have been more manageable than 4-1.

It also seems to me that Wedge was almost thinking ahead in this series by putting Perez in there in the 8th inning, instead of letting Betancourt go one more inning - while Perez has been good throughout the season, he hasn't been quite as good in the postseason and really hasn't been used much against Boston, being that they've hit LHP better than RHP.  I'm thinking Wedge wanted to give Lewis and Mastny some work in case they're needed later in this series, as not using them today would have meant two more days off, and those two haven't been getting much work of late.

While it's disappointing to not finish it off at home, this series is far from over and far from a Boston victory; we just have to have confidence in the staff getting the players ready for Game 6, which I think they will.  And while Schilling has "big-game experience," he's not Beckett in terms of stuff anymore.  And hopefully, Carmona will give us the dominating performance that Sabathia, in my opinion, failed to do.

Just my 2 cents.

Keep the faith and go Indians!  :-)

And even Lester is only 1/2 in shutting us down,
as he was the pitcher who was in the middle of that 7-run outburst we had in Boston (including the 3-run HR by Gutierrez,) so while he might be a better choice than Matsuzaka or Wakefield, he's still not Beckett, who's 2/2 in shutting us down.

game for the wrong reasons - Pronk because he's been non-existant (including striking out 4 times in a start by Wakefield,) and because Grady hesitated on that one ball.

And also, why did FOX have to go on about Torre and what happened earlier in the series with their pregame discussion?  Couldn't they have shown Scott Hamilton throwing out the first pitch and Danielle Peck throwing out the first pitch?

I can't believe they no longer show that, before a postseason game, no less.

I like our chances. 1-1 at Fenway, 1-0 when it's Fausto -vs- Schilling, Schilling's proven hitable, Fausto's proven he can do better, and our lefties can pound balls over that street curb they call the right field wall when they get a pitch they like. :)

Don't stop there.

Pedroia - douchebag.
Drew - overpaid, undercaring.
Lugo - see Drew
Papelbon - douchebag.
Schilling - loud, obnoxious, just not very good
Dicek - shimmy makes the women in Cleveland puke.
Youkilis - douchebag.
Ellsbury - wears one long sleeve, one short sleeve. Douchebag.

The team is very, very hateable.

Lugo is a wife beater also.

It's always shocking to me that so many people cannot mention guys like Bonds (and in the case of RoyalsReview, can't bring up Rafi B) without mentioning steroids, but domestic violence just gets forgotten.

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
A great number of posters on here call the Red Sox classless but what the Indians did was equally classless and just stupid.  I don't think Beckett give one darn about the situation and if anything just motivated him to punch us in the mouth.

Few things from last nights game.

C.C clearly wasn't pitching like an Ace last night and Wedge stayed with him way to long.  This seemed to be because he wanted to see if C.C could straighten himself out which he never did.  It also seems like he was protecting his ego but in playoff games ego's don't mean anything you go with the best you have right now not later.  If they had taken out C.C would have the won last night most likely not but who knows.  It seems to me that the hitters tightened up with C.C on the mound because they knew he didn't have it and they would have to do more to win the game.

I think C.C has lost his teams confidence and it is negatively affecting the team as a whole.  I am not going to lie I am a bit worried about the Red Sox, as I mentioned earlier some posters on here call them classless but what they really are is gritty and confident.  I think Carmona is going to pitch much better in game 6 but he does need to start working both sides of the plate.  The comments from John Farrel were very telling about the story with Carmona.  The inside information that Farrel has on C.C and Carmona has  played to the Red Sox advantage.

As far as my earlier comments about C.C being out of shape and not having a proper diet I stay with that.   Until he fully commits to a lifestyle change of a good diet and work out routine he will continue to have trouble with fastball command.  His mechanics start to fail as the game wears on and that is a direct result of a poor fitness levels.  C.C is in better shape then the average male in the country but he would be considered to be in the bottom 10% of professional baseball players.  Secondly, even if he work out hard it would be meaningless if he doesn't have a proper diet.  Nutrition or the lack of good nutrition will severely affect his abilities on the mound.

Thirdly the personal attack on me are unwarranted.  I am a Indians fan through and through but when I see something I am going to point it out.  Because of my background and training I can see things others can not and understand how thing evolve over time.  I strongly believe in physical fitness and it unnerves me when professional athletes like C.C can not maintain a healthy fitness level.  You don't become over weight by chance.  You have to work at being in shape but it doesn't take anything to become over weight.  I know things about nutrition and how your bacteria in your digestive system affect your weight and health.  C.C is not only damaging his career he is also threating his personal health.  If any one would like to have a long and thought out discussion about nutrition/fitness and how not to become overweight I can certainly provide you with the information.

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
Dude you need to chill.

As to the physical fitness stuff - here's a news flash: not all successful pro athletes are physical fitness fanatics.  You'd be shocked - shocked - to see how many smoke for chrissakes.  Not all of them are out doing 10K's between games.  It's baseball dude - baseball not the Boston Marathon.  No, CC's problems have more to do with pitch selection and location than physical fitness.

And one more thing - as one of my old coach's usta say - there's plenty of guys out there who look like Tarzan and play like Jane.

Your return had been going SO well too. I'd actually started to enjoy your input. Not sure what happened to you in the last couple of days but something switched. And please don't blame it on the fact that you're being critical and that we can't handle that. It's the repetition and extremes that irk me.

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
Based on this I would say the team is not being negatively affected as a whole.

I could understand your frustration on leaving CC in if it was a close game - but it wasn't.  This is what Wedge does - he's managing to win 1 of the next 3 games, knowing that's it's not easy to beat the Sox 4 in a row.  Plus with the way Beckett was pitching, the offense wasn't going to pick CC up anyway.

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
E5, you have been out of line.

I don't think anybody is saying you shouldn't point things out -- so you can stop that lame defense.  You made the same points about C.C. and Wedge literally ten times last night.  We can debate whether you were over-reacting in terms of your opinions, but at some point the sheer repetition crosses the line into trolling.

On this site, we expect everyone to maintain some minimum level of self-awareness about stuff like that, even in the heat of frustration during a game.  You know damned well that you've already said the same thing ten times when you post it for the 11th time -- and at that point, you're just indulging yourself at the expense of antagonizing everyone else.  You need to accept that that's not a reasonable way to behave here and resolve to do better in the future.

Whatever your knowledge about fitness, I doubt you are one of the top sports medicine and sports training people in the nation, and the Indians have people of that caliber in their employ.  It may well be that C.C. is in phenomenal condition despite his appearance -- as any real expert on this subject would tell you.

Moreover, blurting generalities about his command and his career after one mediocre start is the very definition of an overreaction -- this is the hallmark of an amateur analysis on any subject.  C.C. led all major league pitchers in innings pitched, had the most effective and robust year of his career and will be either first or second in the Cy Young voting.

Given those facts, it seems foolish to question the fitness of this player or the judgment of the professionals working with him.  He's now pitched 257 innings -- 15 percent more than Beckett has.  For all we know, that is the main reason his performance has been so lackluster.

At the very least, that explanation makes a whole lot more sense than saying a Cy Young contender is  too fat to command his fastball

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
Fair enough.

However new studies are coming out showing that peak performance from top athletes come when an athletes has an excellent heart.  I am not talking about a "team player/gutty heart", I am talking about a well conditioned physical hear.  There is no way C.C has a well conditioned heart.  One of the reason Vince Young is as good as he is, is because of the physical condition of his heart.

Also the Indians have said many times that C.C isn't as in as good of shape as they would like to see.

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
The Indians have not said that once this year so this is really just another tired rehash of the past. There is a better than average chance that CC has a great heart. He is a world class athlete who showed no signs of fatigue last night.

His lack of control on the fastball is clearly attributable to the fact that he overthrew all night. Not the sign of someone fading or running out of strength. Outward physical condition very rarely accurately demonstrates the condition of the heart.

Dealing with it.

You know what...I've been thinking about last nights loss, and the position the team is in. If a week ago you told me that we were up 3-2 heading to boston, I would be happy. I was hoping for a split in boston and 2 out of 3 in CLE ant that's what they got.

And you know what, this is against boston. Its not supposed to be easy. If it were, they'd be the Yankees.

Beckett complied, escaped a two-on, two-out jam later in the inning, then walked off the field and told an Indians fan behind the Red Sox dugout to "Go ---- yourself."

You can hate him, but would you rather have the Indians contract situation with CC or the Red Sox deal with Beckett?

Re: 2nd GAME THREAD
I would rather have Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Harvey Garcia and Jesus Delgado than either of those contracts.

Beckett's contract extension did turn out to be a very good one, since the market exploded since months later.  It is in fact very similar to Sabathia's contract, it's just that C.C. is closer to the end of it.
