Comeback = Escape from Detroit
The Comeback Players of the Year have been named: Washington National and former Tiger Dmitri Young, and Tampa Bay Devil Ray and former Tiger Carlos Pena. Both players were awarded by the MLB.com corps of writers for their outstanding seasons, and perhaps also for their ability to put the nightmare that is playing for the Tigers behind them.
The articles don't mention how the voting went. Presumably the NL award did not go to Josh Hamilton at least in part because he was not a major leaguer before this season (hence there was no "comeback.") Fausto Carmona may have been thought of as an AL candidate, except that his "comeback" was really just from one bad week last year--he was pretty good to excellent in his non-closer outings last season, something that is easily forgotten.

Not saying it didn't effect Ankiel's stature, but I didn't realize Young was playing that well.

This isn't Best New Artist. It's Comeback Player of the Year. Which is also why I wouldn't lump Fausto in this category.

How long until we're examining leverage instead of save opportunities? I know -- probably a long time.

Sorry to keep harassing you guys, but I'm starting to get a little angry at the world here.

Re: Comeback = Escape from Detroit
Hi everybody!
Re: Comeback = Escape from Detroit
I was at a Nationals game at RFK back in June talking to a friend between innings when the PA announcer directed everyone's attention to the scoreboard out in right field. Apparently they were running a public service announcement with a couple of representatives from a local women's shelter and a Nats player talking about combating domestic violence.
So which player did they select to help deliver this important message? None other than Dmitri Young, charged with domestic assault shortly before being released by the Tigers last year. Needless to say, I was in hysterics. Makes me wonder whether Dmitri volunteered in an effort to make up for his mistake, or whether the Nats front office is really that stupid.
Anyway, congrats to D'MeatHook on his "comeback."
