You have no idea what you are talking about. He is not afraid of Fenway. There is no magic in the air that makes him pitch bad. It's a coincidence. Please stop trying to make baseball into a magical world of make believe chokes and curses.

So have I but certain players have mental blocks at certain places.  Maybe Carmona has one at Fenway.  I think the truth is that he is gassed and just doesn't have it.  Also the Red Sox are an excellent hitting team, add in the fact he only uses one side of the plate and you a recipe for disaster.  As a manager your job is to eliminate as many poor factors  as you can to put your players in the best position to win a game.

No.

I think the truth is that he is gassed and just doesn't have it.

Yes. Also, pitchers go through bad streaks.

As a manager your job is to eliminate as many poor factors  as you can to put your players in the best position to win a game.

And Wedge did this. Saying Fausto should have pitched Games 1 and 5 so he could stay out of Fenway is, well, completely retarded.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Me have missed some opportunities to really hurt Schilling because we are not being patient at the plate.  The pitching has been awful and the defense is non-existent.  That said if we can slow ourselves down we still have a chance.  Even if we don't win but put on a good effort from here on out we can get some momentum going into game 7.  These next 3 innings are key, if we don't slow down we are going to be hurting tomorrow.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Gameplan for tomorrow:

We're going to win.  Here's how.

We're looking for five good innings from Westbrook.  We'll have to have a short hook, and if we get more it's a bonus.  Jake is going to pound the zone, just like he did in game three.

He is the Cy Young winner after all, so we're going to need Sabathia to pitch.  I don't care if he takes Raffy-L's spot, or is our left-handed specialist.  He's going to pitch, and it might be as much as two innings.

We're going to be patient.  Work the pitch count in Dice-K.  This is a good matchup for us, no matter how bad tonight feels.

Also!  There's a small part of me that would consider saying to Raffy-R, "We're going to shred your arm tomorrow night.  Sorry 'bout that.  You're going to start, and we simply can't take you out until you give up at least one run."

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
I agree with Raffy-R pitching a bunch tomorrow.  Get 6 out of Jake; bring in Byrd if we need a reliever to get us to Betancourt and Lewis.  There's absolutely no reason to believe CC will be effective on 2 days rest in relief.  No one else should see the mound unless things get screwy.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
No. I don't think Byrd pitched that well, but as a Bosox fan I don't have a lot of confidence in Dice-K either and you've had more success with the non-"aces" than you have with Carmona and Sabathia.  But let's not get the cart before the horse. We have to win this game to get to even worry about Game 7.

Oh, I didn't know Westbrook was up next. He's a much better pitcher than Byrd, so strike that last comment and replace it with Westbrook/Betancourt/Borowski (probably all the alliteration sounded better.)

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Byrd doesn't have 1/3 of C.C or Carmona's abilities and he has gutted his way through his career.  You will never see him pitch well but what you will see is that he doesn't hurt himself or get rattled.  His stuff just isn't good enough to have consistent quality outing but he never gives in.  C.C and Carmona could learn a lot from his mentality and mental focus.

I don't like any comparison to Chicago pitchers.  Earlier this series they said that Carmona needed to throw across his body like (name escapes me, Chicago pitcher) which is b.s.  NO pitcher should throw across his body, this will only lead to shoulder tears and oblique strains.

the problem is Wedge tends to put replacements in the same spot in the order as the person the're replacing.  The team doesn't have another #3 hitter. We got a few #1 and #2 guys. We've got several #6 through #9 guys. But we don't have any other #3 guys. That's why we need Hafner to stop guessing and start hitting.

Grit.

Tomorrow will feature it. The Indians will have so much grit that Matsuzaka will hang his head in shame after witnessing all of our grit.

Tomorrow's dinner will feature Hafner grit, Martinez grit with some Peralta grit.

And to drink?

Some Jake Westbrook intangibles.

I didn't think that Carmona was going to implode tonight but I did think Schilling would pitch well enough to win.  After losing game 5 I had a feeling it was going 7.  I still think we will win tomorrow because Dice is so un-clutch like C.C has been I am not worried about it.  If Westbrook has his good sinker he will give us 6 strong and with a well rested bullpen we will be in great shape to close it out.

John Farrel is an excellent pitching coach.  He has done a wonderful job with the Red Sox staff, getting the most out of Beckett and Schilling.  DiceK is experiencing the normal transition problems that Japanesse players go through.  DiceK also has so many pitches he has trouble commanding the strike zone.  I am sure DiceK will be much better next year once they shorten his pitches.

Hi again, troops. Took a nice, long, relaxing, aimless drive home from work to cool down a bit and put all of this in the proper perspective.

And the proper perspective this is: I want nothing more than for the Indians to rip the beating heart from the Red Sox's collective chest tomorrow night. I then want them to messily chow down on it right there on the Fenway Park infield.

I don't even care how they do it, as long as they do it.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
I don't wanna get called a troll again, and those are great numbers for the regular season, but in the post he's batting a buck thirty. My two cents: If you've got anybody on the bench who can hit for him, do it.

I don't think Hafner really killed any rallys (a la Coco Crisp) but he's not helping.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Actually, I'm saying an 837 OPS is average for a DH, below average for a #3 hitter, and more representative of what we might expect out of him tomorrow than what he did 2-4 years ago.

Problem is, we don't really have any other options. We're going with what brought us.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Meh!  Your argument doesn't really hold water based on what Francona has done.  He stuck to his guns against all arguments against Coco, Beckett in game 4, and J.D. Drew - and look at where the Red Sox stand.

Comparing Coco to Hafner is absurd.  If Coco breaks out of his slump, it is unlikely his hits will turn a game around.  He might spark a rally, but he will not belt a home run.  Hafner always has a chance to break a game open.  Additionally, pitchers still respect what he can do.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Don't go thinking just because I'm a Sox fan I agree with everything their skipper does. If I was Francona Drew's ass would have been warming some pine since Game 1 and Ellsbury would be our new RF. I cut Coco some slack, but by yesterday I was fed up. We've still got some major problems, Lugo for instance is performing like he did for the first 3 months, and Cora wouldn't be much of a replacement, same with Varitek.

Also don't think I was putting Hafner and Crisp in the same league. Coco's been crap as long as we've had him, but he has somewhat redeemed himself through playing great defense. Obviously that's not an option for a DH. Coco's never going to be a HR hitter, but I think Theo expected him to be a speedy top of the lineup guy with a high OPS.

As for how we got here, Beckett. Beckett's the only reason we aren't headed to Fort Meyers. There's more to it than that, a lot of really crap luck in some games (some of which was visited on you guys today), and some stupid batting, and God knows both of us have had our fair share of "Say WHAT?" moments with the umps, but in the post season it's all about who's hot and Hafner's not hot right now, he's not even lukewarm (again just my $0.02)

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Well, said dkramer, good luck to your team.  This has been a back and forth series and I expect a very good game 7 with lots of drama.  Being a Indians fan and husband of a Red Sox fan, I think I see both teams flaws and strengths better then most.  I had said from the get go that this series would go 7 games.

The series has lived up to its advanced billing even though for the most part the starting pitching for both teams has been worse then expected.  Schilling had a good game tonight but if the Indians hitter were more patient they would  have done much better.  Carmona has finally just hit the wall and is a one dimensional pitcher who will evolve into a great pitcher but he certainly has problems in Boston.

The Indians really need Westbrook to have his good sinker tomorrow night or we will have to go to our bullpen early.  Dice K has had his share of problems this year and certainly doesn't leave anyone with a lot of confidence but if his command is good he could give Boston a quality start something he hasn't done in some time.  Beckett being available in your bullpen is certainly a huge asset where as C.C being available isn't really an asset to the Indians.

Grady Sizemore has had some quality of at bats of late but the results have not showed.  He is the key to the Indians tomorrow and needs to get on base and get a steal or two against an below average Varitek arm.  I predict the Indians will win but in extra innings as both pens will be nearly spent.  If the Indians can get by Beckett the Red Sox bullpen outside of Papelbon is very suspect.  Manny's streak of consecutive hits in playoff games was broken tonight but I fully expect him to have a very good game tomorrow night and be walked late in the game even though Lowell leads the team in RBI's.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Not to take anything away from the positive talk here - and this is not a negative post - I want to put this into perspective.

All of this talk about winning "just one game" is too much.  What this teams needs to be thinking is that they must leave it on the field and let the cards fall as they may.  Over the past two games, the Indians have not brought their A-game and failed to show the world why they have earned their way to this point.  Win or lose, they do not want the memory of this season to be the last two games.  If they go out, play a "gritty" game, and still come up on the short end of the score, they can still hold their heads high.

Crazy things can happen.  A team can play a great game and still lose because of some crazy bounce or bad call.  Or, the team can win for the same reason.  The outcome does not matter as much as the effort put into the game.  I still want a victory very badly and think we have the ability to win, no matter who we are facing.  But, I do not want the desire for victory to stand in the way of enjoying the experience (because the past several days have not been fun).

Go Indians!  Let's have some fun tomorrow.

I left for my coach's birthday in the 7th, couldn't take any more, and haven't read any of these posts, but I'm sure they're largely echoing the same things I am feeling right now.  Super frustrated that we have to play another game; I really feel like we are the best overall team in baseball, and it sucks that it's going to come down to one game to prove it.  But at the same time, if you had given us the option in April of playing Game 7, one shot, for the pennant, winner takes all, we all would have taken it.  To the man (and woman), every last one of us would have signed up in a heartbeat and would have been ECSTATIC to have the chance.  So  let's go Tribe.

Hafner should play. Other than that, I should remind you that the Indians need to win one in three. The Red Sox need to win three in a row. If the Red Sox win three in a row than they deserve to move on, if the Indians win one in three than they deserve to move on... pretty simple stuff here.

Re: Game 6 2nd Thread
Maybe we, as fans and the media, were too confident after Game 4.  It's never over until it's over.

Yes, our own fans and media thought we would cake-walk through Beckett, getting ready to taste the champainge, get ready for the World Series, etc.

Maybe that's why we're so depressed today.  Our mentality of it being "over" after Game 4, when in fact, it was clearly far from over.

This is a great learning experience for all of us fans to never, never, never be so confident being up 3-1, especially against a team who's been in that situation before.

Until we realize that we need 27 outs and a lead to win, we'll never get over ourselves and the disappointment that comes with losses like that past 2 games.
