I'm 27. I can REMEMBER following the Indians for about 19 of those years, though I was at my first game before my first birthday.

1993 was the year I truly fell for the team, though, despite the fact they sucked. My dad took us to a lot of games that last year at old Muni. I think he knew that the time was going to come that none of his sons would be in Cleveland, and he wanted us to have a connection to the city.

I'm still wearing the one and only Tribe hat I've owned for more than a decade now -- my aunt bought it for me when she was visiting from Spokane on June 17, 1994. When we left Tower City that day, we went back to their hotel room and watched the OJ Simpson white Bronco chase.

As I reflect, it's great that youngsters across Ohio (and the nation) are getting their first dose of baseball and seeing what a club the Tribe is. This will only help build our devoted fan base, the way their horrible clubs of the late '80's somehow drew me in.

Wow. A game of inches. Skinner doesn't make the fuck up for the ages, we tie the game. Blake doesn't hit into a double play that nearly breaks us. Has his head in the game in the bottom of the inning. Doesn't miss a fairly routine groundball. Raffy doesn't have to pitch to Pedroia with a man on.

It's going to take the greatest Tribe comeback of all time. I'm sorry. Down 12 to Seattle was magnificent. But right now, I'm terrified our team, that hasn't given in all year, might have just thrown it in.

Re: New Game Thread
I like Billy Beane fine but he's wrong....and his record in the postseason shows it. There is an element of luck to it. But the team with the best record in the regular season gets to the World Series more often than the others. In fact, it's pretty much proportional to a regular seaosn record.

That's not to say luck isn't a big part of it. It is. But the best teams make the plays that need to be made and the best teams minimize mistakes.

The best teams win ballgames other teams lose.

That's why our record during the regular season is NOT insignificant at this point.

We don't need luck anymore. that's for losers. Right now we need to execute and eveyrone needs to do the job they have proven they can do.

If they do .. we win. If they don't. We lose. simple as that.

Re: New Game Thread
The team with the best record hasn't won the World Series since 1998, I think (it was one of the Yankee teams I know). Luck, or the bounce of the ball, or whatever you want to call it, does play a huge part in a series.

Wow, calm down buddy. If payroll is not increased next year I will be very disappointed. It not a fluke that the best players get paid the most money. J.D Drew pretty much was awful all year but what makes him worth the money is what he did the other night. Great players have abilities that players of less caliber do not have. If you want the best players you have to pay for them. Keeping payroll down just to prove you can do it is not only handcuffing yourself but is franchise suicide.

Well the best thing I can say at this point is we are a fairly young team and NOW we have postseason experience...we took out the highest paid team in baseball and took the 2nd highest to the brink of elimination....our youth showed at times and we will be back in this position with the key difference that we will have experience...so I refuse to get discouraged.

This was a pretty damned close game. A matter of a few feet here and there made huge differences. Just think of that ball that jumped over Jhonny, or both of Garko's long fly balls, or Blake's GIDP.

Re: New Game Thread
You are not seeing with clear eyes. The Red Sox are a very classy team for the most part and very gritty. Give them credit, lesser teams would have packed it in (al Yankees). It should be a good World Series. I am proud of the Indians for the most part and next year we will grow from this season. If Gutz can get better and Barfield turns into the player we think he can be our offense will be much better. As for C.C and Carmona it is back to work and hopefully they have learned a great deal from this experience.

I am sure we will back next year facing these Sox in the ALCS again only next time to win and also win the World Series. Wedge and Shapiro hopefully will not rest with the team we have and make some bold moves this off season to make this team that much better. Spending some more on a quality free agent or trading for another starting pitcher or Slugger would really help this team.

They might have overachieved but if C.C and Carmona show up we are not talking about losing this series right now. Both were used 50 IP beyond what they had in the past and I am sure fatigue is what killed them. I think next year Wedge will use them more carefully and save their arms.

Hopefully we can add to your offense so we don't have so many close games and we can get some of those guys out of there earlier. Both should also evaluate their training programs and diets not that Carmona is over weight in fact could stand to add some lean muscle. C.C could stand to lose a few not only for his baseball future but for his future health. I am sure both will come back much stronger and better off because of this experience.

Sabathia and Carmona had ERAs of 2.37 and 1.78 in September, respectively. They got better as the season went on, not worse - especially CC. Endurance had nothing to do with it.

CC & Fausto
There is merit to what you say about IPs, but then again, there was more to this than IPs. CC, in particular, didn't look tired so much as perplexed. As Casey or Yogi or maybe somebody else said, 90% of this game is half mental.

Re: CC & Fausto
Yea mentally both seemed out of it that is for sure. I am just saying the extra training can also help with the mental part because you learn how to overcome when you are pushing yourselves further then you have in the past.

I grew up in Boston and I still consider New England home. I love the Patriots. I love the Celtics. I love the Bruins.

But I cannot say anymore that "the Red Sox are my second-favorite team."

They were a feel-good, underdog team for many, many years and I could get away with it.

But now, they're the NY Yankees. They're the evil empire, buying whatever they need, and destroying baseball in other cities.

I will never utter a kind word about them again.

And I hope the Rockies kick their ass, even though I know they won't.

Congratulations to Red Sox fans everywhere. But as of now, since your franchise isn't any different than the Yankees, neither are the Red Sox fans any different than Yankees fans.

I'm putting a curse on you. (g)

Fucking sucks to see it end like this, it just does. There's no mitigating the shittiness of this. It sucks so bad because it was all so good.

I'm upset, yes. This game was very close for quite a long time and could have gone either way. Such is life.

I'm thrilled with where we are. I would take Game 7 of the ALCS every year if you could promise it in Spring Training. The rout hurts, but it beats how the season ended in 2006. In September. If anything, I would suggest they soak it in; really take in how much it hurts to see the score and the Red Sox Nation celebrating right in front of you. Remember that with every pitch you take next year.

Our team is not broken- we just lost the war. Next year the Indians will certainly contend. Congratulations on a great year Tribe! Now I'm gonna go ball like a little girl...

given the fact that raffy-l and raffy-r are completely spent;

that cc has completely spit the bit and carmona's confidence is a very fragile thing.

give all of this, and given the fact that -- had lofton been called safe, had skinner sent him home, had garko's shot been a bit to the right -- and we could somehow win this game we would be absolutely spent, emotionally and physically, going into the series, maybe it's better to end it right here.

say what you will, but even if we had won this game it would have been very long odds for us in the series.

not impossible. but i'd rather lose to the sox than face the red hot and rested rockies with half of the team exhausted or awol.

Re: New Game Thread
It was a very good run for the Tribe this season, especially when I gave them very little chance to get to October when they were busy losing all those 2-1, 1-0, 3-2 games for a month in the middle of the summer....

But I shake my head a little when I read all these "we'll get'em next year" posts...

It's great experience for the entire team, but I don't know if the casual fan of baseball (I'm not a casual fan.... I don't know how many people here would consider themselves that) really, really understands and appreciates how hard it is to get this point... you have to be good, sure, but you need some luck (actually maybe a lot), guys need to stay healthy, other guys need to have career years, youngsters that you aren't expecting anything from need to produce above and beyond....

The Tribe had all of that this year...but there's no real reason to expect it to continue next season.. just ask the Tigers this year.... I'm not being negative, rather just trying to be realistic... I mean, no one can sit here and predict the impact all these innings are going to have on Sabathia and Carmona next season... want a comparison? Just look at the ChiSox and Tigers the years after their starters had to pitch deep into the playoffs... And what about Hafner? Is this just an off year, or is he, as someone said, headed toward Bob Hamelin territory? And would anyone honestly expect Betancourt to be as good next year?

Those are just a few of many questions heading into next season

Basically what I'm saying, is that losing at this time of the season, after being within one game of the Series totally sucks because, despite their obvious talent there's absolutely no guarantees the Indians will be back in this position next year...... In fact, I would wager the odds are actually against it happening again...

So, anyway...... GO ROCKIES!!!

by harp1987 on Oct 22, 2007 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

Re: New Game Thread
Er, who on this team had a career year? Sabathia and Betancourt had their best years to date, but they're both under 30, and it's a little nebulous to pronounce a "career year" when their careers are so far from over. But offensively? No one. You're actually hard-pressed to find a starter who hasn't declined significantly in the last two years.

We won 96 games in a year in which our best offensive player (Hafner) went .266/.385/.451 and all of our free agent aquisitions flopped miserably (Dellucci, Nixon, Hernandez). There's no reason this team can't be at least comporable to this year's success next year.

Re: New Game Thread
the key is the foundation. We have good starting pitching. I don't think anybody is thinking there isn't a need to improve.

The Indians lost primarily because they didn't know how to handle thing sin the playoffs. So the education is important.

But the Yankees are on a slide; they may not make the plahyoffs next year. I think two teams in the Central Division will make the playoffs next year.

The one thing I want to seeon the team next year is a little less "even keel" and I'd like to add the emotional team leader.

We don't have that right now. We have a lot of good, talented, QUIET-in-the-clubhouse guys. But we could use that really good vet.

I wouldn't mind signing Mike Lowell, especially since both the Tigers and white Sox are rumored to be ready to go after him.

No, there are no guarantees. If there were, this sport would suck.

Great post-season Tribe.

I'm thankful for everything you've given the fans. Gonna be a learning experience. Come back next year with wisdom gained from this post-season. You'll be vets next year. Hopefully that will mean CC and Carmona pitching more like the last three innings of Westbrook (and more generally Westbrook and Byrd all through this series).

Still, I look back on the victory over the Yankees as the key accomplishment done here. It was endlessly satisfying and I'll treasure the solemn faces on Yankee players for a long long time. The Indians pretty well ended the Yankee dynasty of the last decade.

It was good fight in the ALCS, but the guys learned you need to cut off the head or three Becketts will rise up in its place and then five key hits and it just spirals from there.

But to focus on the positive, I think that Byrd and Lofton need to come back, probably Sabathia too, maybe get an experienced, locked-in reliever for the bullpen and make sure pitchers don't burn themselves out over the season.

With this series done...it's a no brainer, I'm pulling for the Rockies. Just hoping it's not snowed out.

Thanks again Tribe for a wonderful 2007. It was a wonderful year and a beautiful couple of weeks which have shortened my life by years :)

Re: New Game Thread
Okay, it hurts. We had them and then lost the series. I have compared this series with 1999 several times, but upon reflection I think that that comparison is unfair.

This year, the Red Sox were the better team. They have a better hitting line up, a true ace starter and a true closer. Over seven games, that meant that they won four of seven.

In 1999, I thought we had the better team by several measures. This year, I do not think that is true, and I never thought that was true.

In 1999, I was angry; this year, disappointed.

I think Wedge did a great job this year and in these playoffs. The only big question I had was tonight with Gutz in the line up instead of Nixon. Gutz got two hits, so edge to Wedge.

This team is not a Cinderella story; it's a team that's grown into a contender. I am happy with that.

We have so much to be happy about, we have had so much unadulterated fun, that it would be wrong to crap all over this year just because we were one game short of going to the World Series.

And another thing
Just a thought to take into the long Cleveland winter:

THIS IS THE TEAM THAT GOT JOE TORRE FIRED!

Re: New Game Thread
I in no way meant to imply that the Indians won't be a contender next season... In fact, I would be surprised if they weren't picked to win the Central based on the nucleus they have returning, both in the rotation and in the everyday lineup.

But, for everything that went right this season, there's that much that no one can predict for next season...Sure, I think we all feel safe penciling Sabathia and Carmona in for 15 wins each, conservatively.... and likewise, I would expect Martinez and Sizemore to be offensive forces like they have been in the past....Garko looks like he could develop into a middle of the order run producer...

After that, though, there's a lot of uncertainty for a team that has as many supposed young core players as the Tribe.

Can Hafner return to his old form?

Will Casey Blake be the everyday third baseman next season? If so, what happens to Marte?

This team is still crying for a run-producing corner outfielder. Gutierrez showed flashes maybe being capable of producing at a .270-25-90 (ballpark estimates) if given full time status.

What about left field though?

What about Cliff Lee? His age and contract should make him attractive to a team looking for pitching, or does Shapiro hope he can overcome his head-in-rectum disease?

Bssically what I'm saying is I would fully expect the Indians to contend next year, but Shapiro's got plenty of work to do if he wants to give them the best opportunity to do that again.

Re: New Game Thread
Of course, it makes sense that after game 4 of the ALCS, the Indians had a better than 50% chance of going to the WS.

At the beginning of next season, it will probably be in the 15-25% range. It's not easy, with the increasing parity, to get to the WS.
