Westbrook

Dont crucify me for saying this especially since they lost.  But Westbrook pitched well in the ALCS. So if anything, that was a bright spot. Either way it sucks. I hate to say it, but i saw this collapse coming.  Theres a certain "luster" for lack of a better term, that the indians just dont have and boston does. oh well GO Rockies!

Re: Westbrook
Jake went a long way toward erasing our frustration at his contract, that's for sure.

Re: Westbrook
Westbrook kept us in the game last night. If we happened to win last night he would have been my ALCS MVP.

Re: Westbrook
Amen, beother. Jake was inspiring in exactly the way we needed C.C. and Fausto to be. I admit that I've been down on him a bit since we saw him at that awful Chicago game on the day of the air show, but he definitely earned my respect in the ALCS.

Re: Westbrook
Westbrook prepared and executed his strategy perfectly. He stepped up big for us.

Re: Westbrook
Frankly, Boston's luster is worth about $80 million more than Cleveland's.

Re: Westbrook
well yeah, but that $80 million just bought them a trip to the fall classic.

Re: Westbrook
If only one of our aces had shown up in the ALCS, we'd have been fine.  I'm thinking that my next jersey out to be Westbrook.  He totally stepped up.

Re: Westbrook
i'm upset. I totally planned on a Carmona jersey after we won the series. Now I'm not so sure it'd be a worthy investment.

That said, Westbrook is the new Nagy.

Re: Westbrook
I don't know if I'll go jersey, I really like those player t-shirts nowadays. Cheaper and easier to wear around the house and such. I was going to go Fausto myself, but I think I'm gonna go Droobs.

Victor for me. Others have said it, but seeing him cry last night ... that just really hit me hard.

Re: Westbrook
No doubt.  Contrast that to Manny's "so what?"  I really believe Victor had confidence to the end, and was the heart and soul of the team.  As much as I loved the whole team and would bounce around in choosing a favorite, my wife has had it right ever since I turned her on to the Tribe.  "Victor's my boy."

Re: Westbrook
I'm kind of glad I missed that. Poor guy. He really is our MVP.

Re: Westbrook
Vic isn't just our MVP, he is the heart and soul of this team.  I think I'm going to spend the money I set aside in my head for world series paraphernalia on a #41 jersey.
I'm glad I missed it too.  Seeing him lose it would have sent me over the edge.

I like the thought of Jake being the new Nagy.  I wonder why I never thought of that before.  They are very similar, and both pitch with a lot of guts.  Nagy was always right near the top of my favorites.  I wish he'd never tried that comeback with the Padres.  He should have been only an Indian

Re: Westbrook
And they both wanted to stay in Cleveland and actually signed contracts.

by rog on Oct 22, 2007 3:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: Westbrook
Nagy complained to the press, dragged out negotiations and demanded top-dollar from Hart, who rationalized that the lack of a contract was the reason he was struggling.  It was a terrible miscalculation, and his last contract was possibly the worst one the Indians have ever given.

by Jay on Oct 22, 2007 4:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: Westbrook
Jake deserves a lot better than that comparison.  Nagy never pitched with any damned guts.  He was the quintessential nibbler.  Nibbled through the 1996 ALDS, nibbled through the 1997 World Series, and never had two good starts in any postseason series.

Jake exemplifies my favorite thing about our veteran pitchers:  They might get creamed, but they don't beat themselves.  Byrd and Borowski throw strikes, do their best to fool people, let the chips fall where they may.  Jake does the same thing, just with slightly better stuff.

by Jay on Oct 22, 2007 4:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: Westbrook
Absolutely, totally agree.  Let's stop the Westbrook = Nagy thing right here and now.  Now, if people want to start talking about Chad Ogea... I'm listening.

Re: Westbrook
Yeah, I'm kind of wondering if my Blake T-shirt should be consigned to "house work"/"sleep wear" rotation.

I like the guy, but Jesus did he let me down yesterday.  :(

Crucified!

Kidding.  Westbrook officially became "my dog" after his ALCS performance.

Re: Westbrook
he was a lion out there in the 5th and 6th and in the other post-season games, too.

really.  going straight at these hitters.  not that many walks.  hitting his spots.  inducing double plays.  just pitching.

i hope and believe this could translate into success for him if he's healthy next year: after doing this to the yanks and the sox, can you imagine how much confidence he'll have in his stuff against the majority of al teams.

if only cc and carmona could have learned what jake and byrd already know: trust your stuff, go after hitters, and even if they make contact they're still going to be out 2/3 of the time.

Asdrubal: Spanish form of "Hasdrubal". Means "Ba'al helps" from Phoenician azru "help" combined with the name of the god BA'AL.
