Indians 2007

The Indians gave us tons of wonderful moments this year. Amidst the disappointment we are all feeling, I thought of my favorite moments from 2007. During the regular season:

  1. Torii Hunter talking about Fausto's stuff
  2. 5 runs in 9th to beat Tigers 12-11.
  3. Shoppach walkoff versus A's
  4. Emergence of AsCab
  5. Betancourt's entire year
  6. Jhonny Peralta's Laser Eye Surgery Commercials
  7. How Fans responded to Lofton
Post Season:
  1. A-Rod and Jeter sucking
  2. The Gnats
  3. 11th inning, Game 2, ALCS
  4. Victor Martinez
  5. Jhonny Peralta's Laser Eye Surgery Commercials

I have to agree with Torii being number 1. I've never bragged to my friends so much about a Cleveland Indian in my life as I did after those comments.

I laughed at this ad repeatedly, until my wife said I should come up with something new to repeat to her. To which I said, "I steel cannot hit with runner een scoring poseetion, but I see much, much better now."

While that probably had to be revised for the postseason, she laughed anyway. At least the first time I said it.

Me too & that was a great game in an otherwise lousy series, but many of those Indians fans left when the team was down in late innings.  Walking into RFK it seemed like 20% Indians fans, walking out after the victory it seemed like 5%.

J-Mike's catch the 2nd game of the season then Grady almost punching him in the face.

Grady's homerun on the 3rd pitch of the season. In my head I always had one of those fantasy endings in that Sizemore would have ended the baseball season with a homerun as well, about a week from now.

Not in any particular order, and by no means a complete list:

  1. Vic's All-Star game HR.
  2. Watching #13 on the field during the last two months of the season. And being pleasantly reminded of a previous #13.
  3. Grady on defense.
  4. Grady during the pivotal inning of the Bug Game.
  5. Rally Pies.
  6. Beating the Yankees.
  7. Lofton coming back home.
  8. Watching Carmona dominate.
  9. Brian Anderson = good broadcaster.
  10. Rick and Matt matching. Drove me nuts at first, and then, much to my horror, I realized I looked forward to seeing them match.

Sigh. I really loved this season.

Hunter's comment was my favorite by far ... but some others were.

The triple play.

Shoppach throwing out Aybar at 3rd in the 9th inning of the first "home" game in Milwaukee.  He earned JoBo a save in an unlikely fashion, something we were going to see more of.

And, in the interest of equal time, JoBo keep his cool and getting the save against the White Sox when the defense gave Chicago at least 2 extra outs through errors and/or missed catches.

Grady leading off game 4 of the ALDS with a home run.

Went to a game in July with dgcambridge, Turk and my son.  After striking out in the 7th, I think, Shoppach broke the bat over his knee.  My son, who was seeing his third Indians game, asked me, "Dad, does he do that every time he strikes out?"  Nope, I said, only when he's mad.  "Good" my boy said, "other wise they couldn't afford to keep him in bats".

I'll never forget that game.

Dellucci walkoff game for me.

It was sandwiched between Games 5 and 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. So the Anti-Detroit sentiment was at an all time high.

Was heading towards the exit in the middle of the 9th (after Detroit had extended the lead to 4) ran into a friend from work on the homerun porch. Decided to stay and chat....

Worked out pretty well.

  1. The comeback against Detroit, it's when I knew Jacob's field magic was back...we had that place ROCKING and I'll never forget being there for it.

  2. Game 1 vs. the Yanks...first playoff game ever for me, it was electric.  I had heard the word a billion times in my life but I experienced it first had.  Priceless watching the game w/ my brother too.

  3.  Delucci sticking up for Barfield.  I thought to myself that is a teammate.

  4.  Watching Carmona at work the first time he out dueled Johan.  I watch his stuff and told a co-worker...He looks like Kevin #$#@$ Brown w/ that movement.  Co-worker looked at me...who is Kevin Brown?  Not exactly surrounded by real beisbol fans there...

  5.  Game 3 against the Bosox...another playoff game.  Going crazy after Kenny hit the HR and jumping around like I was ten yrs old w/ my brother!!!

The Good:

Garko's freak hit off of Seattle's RP White. Took a wicked hop and helped fuel a huge comeback that inning.

Sweeping the Tigers/Twins in the last series with them.

5 run comeback against Detroit.

Jobo's 5-out inning against Chicago.

Asdrubal tying up the game in the 9th against Detroit (?), when all looked lost up to that inning.

The Bad:

Hargrove getting the game cancelled.

Brandon Phillips destroying us in the regular season.

The depression of knowing Fausto was going back to the minors .. the elation when he came back a week later.

Ferd Cabrera completely unravelling.

Both Yankees series (although the first one hurt more).

GFP, I was going to mention that Orioles run.

The PD cover picture of a Mariners pitcher warming up on snow-covered Jacobs Field for the home opener.

K-Love's walk-off walk.

Game 2 against Boston was a great game, a great ending.  Tom Mastny shutting down Boston's 3-4-5 in the bottom of the 10th, when we the faithful were guessing how many pitches it would take him to lose and who would get the walk-off.

And generally the great clutch performances from unexpected places up and down the order -- Blake, Shoppach, Garko, Peralta, Asdrubal, Gutz, even Trot.  The sense we could have a different hero every night, and we couldn't guess who it could be.

Also, for me personally -

Seeing the team at Winter Haven for the first time.  They won too, but being there mattered more.

Saying hi to Bob Feller there.  What a guy.

Watching 2 of their first games in DC in about 35 years, one of them an archetype of this team's never-say-die comeback win style.  Somebody above already mentioned Victor's homer off Chad Cordero that did the trick.

My 4 year old kid overruling my better judgment and refusing to leave Camden Yards until after the last inning, which happened to be the 10th, about 3 hours past his bedtime on a Friday night an hour's drive away from home.  Even if the team lost that one.

My fav list has triple play on top, what a magical, "what did we see there" moment as I was sitting with my baseball buddy by third base line, and actually saw it happen live.  Next was watching the games on tv when they were in Milwaukee, so hungry to see games again and all the fans came out to see the tribe there, the stadium selling shirts that said " the milwaukee Indians, established19...(Major League date), re-established 2007"  The great comeback in June when I was telling my 4 year old who couldn't sleep " Honey, sometimes your team wins, and sometimes they lose', and she kept saying, "what are those red diamonds on the tv, wow, look at the indians hitting."  Taking my 4 year old twins to their first game, the excitement when they saw Jacobs Field from view boxes for the first time. Overall. all the season was pure joy, even when the team lost. Baseball is magic. My kids are asking to go to a game already, and I have to explain, "we have to wait until next year".

The Jensen Lewis/Facebook thing was awesome.  I remember checking back every minute or so, not really believing it.  The only thing that came close to it was Adam Lind/Paul Lynde.

As for favorite Tribe moments:

  • Game 1 ALDS.  I'd never made it to an Indians playoff game before.  Had good seats, watched an amazing game.
  • Shoppach walk-off
  • Talking Tom Hamilton bobblehead is the best invention ever.
  • Being there for Opening Day, freezing, watching the game in disbelief, especially when they called it with a freaking no-hitter going on.
  • The sweep in Detroit (Lots of fans screaming at me as I walked in, none as I walked out.  Odd... Plus, had free seats in the first row behind the Indians dugout.  Fausto gave me a ball when he came off the field)
  • The triple play.
  • The emergence of Garko as a must-quote, namely his reaction to Matt Underwood trying to get philosophical ("Party on E. 6th tonight!  Ask for Josh Barfield!")
  • Kenny's first few games back in Cleveland.
  • Pronk in Minneapolis
  • Torii Hunter's comments on Fausto

My favorite "moments" actually took weeks to reveal themselves:

The Tribe's in a funk -- no hitting, no relief pitching to speak of. Right field has no production. Second base has no production. Left field is a question mark. The bullpen has a huge hole.

And then . . .

Franklin G. starts to produce offesively and defensively and sees more and more action. Kid Cabrera steals second from Barfield and is lights out. Raffi P. is called up and is lights out.

It just all fell into place.

How many times is that going to happen? It was beautiful.

Thanks for this post, man. Everyone's named most of my favorites already, but seeing them all here in one place is really reminding me what a great season this was.

Re: Indians 2007
Memorable moments, just from the 4 games I went to this year:

(1) Cleveland coming back from a 4-run deficit, twice, including 5 runs in the 9th to beat Detroit 12-11.
(2) Fausto outdueling Josh Beckett in a 1-0 win vs. Boston.
(3) Jhonny's 3-run HR to tie the game vs. Detroit in September.
(4) Blake's walkoff HR vs Detroit, his second walkoff in four days.
(5) Fausto striking out A-Rod 3 times in a playoff game.
(6) Joba Chamberlain being eaten alive.
(7) Pronk's 11th inning winner in ALDS Game 2.

I think I picked some good ones.

For me the turning point in the season was when Dellucci stuck up for Barfield. After that I thought, This is a team. It might be the most indelible image in my mind after Shoppach's walk-off homer.

And though I don't remember it, whenever the first pieing took place. That should be on this list.

It was roughly somewhere around the Lynde/Lind/Fasano game.  I remember it being a very new and funny conversation piece in that game's thread after someone got pied.

Re: Indians 2007
I forgot my most favorite moment of games I actually went to.

I forget the date, but it was the game against the Sox where Garko hit a game tying two-run homer in the 9th and then the game-winning bloop single in the 11th that scored Michaels from 2nd.

I remember three things distinctly from that game:

  1. It was the first time I saw the "Rally Pie" and "Hells Bells" montages on the jumbotron.
  2. Me jumping, screaming and taunting the tubby South Sider behind me that had been trash-talking all game after the Garksmash.
  3. That was the first time I realized that if we get to the 9th and it's tied, we win because of our stellar relief corps.

Re: Indians 2007
Signing Johan Santana to be the team punching bag did not get nearly enough play amongst these memories.

We dominated an elite pitcher that, despite his record, was very much on his game throughout the year.

Next year I want to say the same thing about Josh Beckett.

I think my favorite moment of the season was when Hafner beat the Jays' shift with a slow bouncer down the third base line.

Said Hafner: "In retrospect, it probably wasn't a pitch I should have swung at."

Re: Indians 2007
1.) ALDS Game 2: I've never been that emotionally involved in a baseball game before, so it was pretty intense for me.  Classic game.

2.) I'd like to pick out a single moment from Fausto, but there are just too many.

3.) July 17, at the Jake.  Garko hits a walk-off single against Chicago in the 11th inning.  Not their best walk-off this season, but a personal favorite.

4.) Putting Detroit away in the final series and winning the division shortly after.

5.) Watching Cabrera play defense wearing number 13.

Re: Indians 2007
Game 2 ALDS was the most stressful, amazing playoff game I've attented also.  Carmona looked so unbeatable, i thought we were winning the world series for sure after that.  The satisfaction of beating the Yankees like that was PRICELESS!

When Gutz hit that home run in the final Detroit series, I seriously could only say "WOW", again the Indians seemed unstoppable...

Telling my fiend in Chicago to put this new kid "Cabrebra, Asdrubal" onto her fantasy BB team, she won her league with the help of a few fresh indians at the end of the year.

Re: Indians 2007
more non-baseball moments:

a split home-away doubleheader in Seattle.

having Beckett's ex sing the anthem; even if it didn't work as a baseball move it would have made Bill Veeck proud of his old team.

I think I like that sort of quirky & weird stuff (like seeing a Cardinals-Nats game at RFK where the Cards pitcher batted 8th, had an average around 280, and smacked a solid home run) equally as the game winners and other dramas.

Re: Indians 2007
My favorite moments are sort of blurred, but one of them is personal.

During one of the countless times I listened to Hammy & Heegan this season on MLB.com (and on 1100 in upstate NY - that is one powerful station at night) I dashed off a fan letter to those guys.

When I opened my mail last week there was a lovely note from Hammy thanking me for my note.

Those 2 guys have been the soundtrack to my Indians season. "A Swing and Drive" is my mantra.

For me, it isn't just those wonderful players.  Everybody contributes, especially Hamilton & Heegan and the whole radio team.

Re: Indians 2007
The first game of the Tigers series at Comerica right before the All-Star break, July 3rd. My Dad and I drove up for the game and drove back after it ended.

Byrd wasn't great, but kept them in it.  Francisco came in to pinch hit in the 7th with the Tribe down a run.  The Tiger fans around me (which, except for one drunk jerk, were very nice and made it an enjoyable experience), asked me who he was, as it was less than a week after his walk-off.  I referred to him as Ben "Instant Offense" Francisco to the Tigers fans.  And on cue, he hits the first pitch just over the wall in left to tie it up.

Masty comes in and loads the bases with one out in the bottom of the tenth.  He somehow retires Guillen and Pudge to end the inning.  Next half inning, Blake hits a BOMB to right over the original fencing, and JoeBo gets the save in the bottom of the 11th.  Driving, we caught Hammy's highlights on WTAM.  AFter the final out, he exclaimed, "This team is INCREDIBLE!!!".  Kind of the mantra for the year.

Re: Indians 2007
Anything having to do with Fausto.  If I had to narrow it down to three:
  - a. Fausto taking a shutout into the ninth inning against Baltimore on the day he was sent back to Buffalo.
  - b. The 1-0 win over Beckett.
  - c. A game he pitched against the Yankees in October.

Kelly Shoppach putting his shoulder into the bunter, throwing to third to start a DP, and stifling a Detroit rally in the biggest regular season game of the year.  (Note to Boston fans:  This is what Fisk should have done in 1975.  So shut up.)

A beautiful moonlit night out here in the Arizona desert, sitting on the patio watching the Tribe and Tigers on mlb.tv, with the great Ernie Harwell sitting in on the Tigers' telecast.  When the topic of good control pitchers came up, Ernie  tossed out the name of Christy Mathewson.  Gawd, I love baseball.....

This is a great thread to run through.  I've got nothing really to add except Spring Training.  I'm an optimist and I always, always, always love Spring Training.  This year was no exception...the epic Mike Rouse/Luis Rivas battle.  BenFran putting up 3 HRs and foreshadowing a great season.  Marte appearing to have a clue at the plate.  Grady Sizemore sucking badly and terrifying me...then busting out the first two weeks of the season.  Adam Miller teasing us with his potential (14 shutout innings).

Can't wait till next Spring...

Re: Indians 2007
I think I'm finally ready to recount my favorite bits of the 2007 season. For the first time since Sunday, I managed to make it through a whole day without wanting to deck someone or curl up under my desk. Life goes on, indeed.

So, here are my favorite memories of this year (in order Of their appearance) ...

  • Seeing C.C. pitch a full game against the A's on June 25 from killer seats behind the plate.

  • That late-June/pre-Break blitz. This stretch of games and come-from-behind wins is what finally locked me in for the rest of the year.

  • July 2. My first Carmona game at the Jake. Almost overshadowing the Icy Cold One is Rafael Perez being summoned into a bases-loaded-and-no-one-out situation not only getting all 3 outs, but not allowing a single runner to score whilst doing so.  Oh yeah ... Grady also belted a grand slam an inning or so later. Bonus.

  • July 25. Fausto vs. Beckett in a 1-0 game (following a 0-1 loss the previous night). Probably my favorite regular season game of the year right there. Really, just about any time Carmona pitched was not to be missed: you were always wondering if this would be the night he'd pull off a no hitter (or perhaps something even better).

  • July 16. Seeing Jensen Lewis pitch in his first major league appearance (a shootout against the White Sox).

  • THA BEER GUY!!! He makes The Upper Deck Experience that much richer.

  • July 27. Kenny comes home again and promptly reminds everyone how much we really missed him over the years. At the time, I was a bit apprehensive of this move remembering Lofton as a bit of a brooder and a possible disruptive influence on this group of guys. Now, I'm wishing he wasn't leaving again.

  • That hilariously craptastic "Let's Go Tribe!" song. Like an unholy fusion of Toni Basil and Def Leppard.

  • August 27. The Triple Play. We saw this at the game and I fairly rocketed out of my chair at the end. WOW. I still watch that clip every week or so.

  • We got to the Jake early enough on 8/27 to catch the team taking batting practice. A whole bunch of kids around us were chirping "FAUSTO!! FAUSTO!!! FAUSTO!! FAUSTO!!" every single time Carmona had a ball in his hand as he paced deep in center field, chatting with another player. At one point, Fausto, without turning around, barked a faux-irritated "NO!" at one point to shut them up. That gave us a good laugh.

  • Listening to ninth innings on the way home from work nearly every night and cracking up as Hammy riffed on such pitchers as Mike MacDougal: "You could stand at the plate without a bat and he'd walk you" and RP WHite: "He hasn't changed a bit!"

  • September 2. The Jake was being buzzed by jets all afternoon, which was really about the only cool part of an otherwise gorgeous Sunday spent watching the Tribe getting completely wiped out by the freakin' ChiSox.

  • C0mpl3+3l7 pwn1ng Johan Santana all year long.

  • The statue of Bob Feller wearing the "IT'S TRIBE TIME NOW" t-shirt.

  • September 17. Being at the Jake and watching Casey Blake bean walk-off homerun #2 of the weekend against Detroit. What a rush.

  • September 23. Being at the AL-C clinching game. An equal dose of beauty, bedlam and nirvana.

  • ALDS Game 2. Fausto 3-hits the Yankees, allowing one run. The last time we were to see him in regular season form, sadly. And, of course, the midges, if only for the sheer WTF factor of the whole incident. I listened to the radio broadcast of that game while at work and literally could not believe what I was hearing. What a remarkable, weird, uplifting comeback.

  • Trot Nixon takes Roger Clemens deep in ALDS Game 3. Ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa.

  • Byrd in Game 4 of the ALDS. I was on the "oh shit pitch C.C." bandwagon and he proved me wrong. I just hope that the news that broke a week later won't end up staining this game in my memory.

  • Torching the everf---ing Yankees.

  • Hamilton on Pedroia: "A very easy player to dislike."

  • The 10th and 11th innings of ALCS Game 2. The puppy took on the SUV and won.

  • Kenny Lofton's home run off of Matsuzaka in Game 3.

  • Rafael Betancourt for nearly the entire damn season, but he looked absolutely superhuman while he was systematically defanging Detroit, New York and Boston.

  • Aaron Laffey's relief outing in Game 6 after Fausto and Perez went down the tubes. Ah, what if ...

  • Jake Westbrook in ALCS Games 3 and (especially) 7: a true hero when we most needed one. Ah, what if ..., part 2.
