USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo

Pretty good article at USS Mariner concerning Bartolo Colon's free agency.  To be truthful, Bartolo wasn't even on my radar before reading this, but the author makes some excellent points.

I hate to be one of those "let's bring back the team from the '90's" people, but could this be a wise investment for us?  With some uncertainty regarding Byrd and our 5th starter, it seems like a one year deal with a team option would be worth the risk, especially to use as insurance if we don't re-sign CC.

Thoughts?

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
He clearly has some upside value and would or could be another quality arm for our starting staff.  He could provide us with a instant quality number five starter.  I am sure he would have to be on an incentive based contract but something worth looking into that is for sure.

Good finds, maybe we should work for Shapiro because he doesn't see these potential signing out there.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
oh, excellent! you responded to my post. I guess if I engage you in an argument/discussion you won't respond, but if I lower myself to your level of discourse you are happy to respond away!

Your last line of your original post is nothing more than outright ignoring facts (i.e. Kevin Millwood was exactly the type of signing undertaken by Shapiro that you are asking for) and continues to demonstrate your bias against the FO of this team. For you to pick and choose details and make assumptions (i.e. [to be read in annoying mocking voice] "oh well, Shapiro says he's happy with the team right now....he must mean he's not going to make any big moves this offseason"), and ignore facts (ala the Millwood signing) to fulfill your anti-front office agenda is rather annoying. Couple this with your penchant for making a biased statement, being rebuked with facts, and then not responding, this becomes a tiresome (for me anyways) act.

We all know E5. You don't like the front office, you don't like the owner. We know. You don't have to continue to disguise these "opinions" in your discussions/comments.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
The answer is no. We have too many "#5's" as it is ..

Sowers
Lee
Laffey
Miller (??)

Those are four guys that have more upside and cheaper contracts than Bart.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
Cliff Lee and Jeremy Sowers shouldn't even be considered reasonable number five starters.

Miller is most likely better suited in the bullpen at the major league level and Laffey has not had enough starts to prove he is capable of doing so.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
and what is it about bartolo that makes you think he'd be a good #5 or more importantly, a decent value?  is it the 161 baserunners in 99 innings this past season?  the 6.34 era?  oh wait, i know, it's the 28 total starts he's had over the past TWO seasons.  for someone who posts rather self-assuredly, your ideas kind of suck.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
Did you read the USS Mariner article at all that pretty much sums up how I feel about it.  Colon has had some injuries the last few year but they all have been minor and he hasn't lost his stuff.  He has had an incredible run of bad luck.  Small sample size applies to his last few years.  Earlier in the year he was pitching pretty well until another minor injury put him down again.  Conditioning or lack of conditioning has lead to his injuries the last few years but when pitching healthy he has been pretty good.  He would be an excellent post season starter.  We have proven we can make it that far so if we added him and just keep him healthy enough to get to October we could have a great haul.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
"Then, 2006 hit, and the injuries began to take their toll. He battled shoulder inflammation that cost him most of the first half of the `06 season, then lost the last two months with a triceps injury. He began the `07 season the DL due to a problem with his rotator cuff, then fought the tricpes thing again, and was finally shut down with pain in his elbow."  That's directly from the article on USS Mariner.

let's see, a pitcher that's battled shoulder inflammation, rotator cuff problems, tricep pain (twice) and finally pain in his elbow over the past two years.  you might call all that minor, i do not call injuries/problems with almost every part of his arm from his shoulder to his fingertips minor.  i'd take my chances with laffey or sowers at 1/20th the price.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
I can humor you on Lee. Sowers? No. Sowers will be a servicable #5 starter at least.

Miller may end up in the bullpen but he's a starter for now and more valuable in that role.

I agree with you on Laffey.

You didn't reply to my post in an earlier thread, but don't assume Shapiro didn't consider a move simply because it didn't happen. Have you read "Dealing"?

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
Sowers = Byrd light.

It takes a long time to become gritty enough to pitch serviceable when you don't have over powering stuff.  Heck, lots of dominate stuff pitchers have trouble pitching well enough to stay in the major leagues let alone a guy who by definition nibbles.  I love Sowers and think he is gutty and I love seeing the little guy win out but lets be honest what he is.  He is a spot starter who will get better as he ages because he will learn how to set up hitters better.  You can not count on him being a consistent starter given his lack of stuff and inexperience.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
Byrd has been consistent with no stuff. You solve the inexperience by letting him pitch.

He showed in '06 that he can deal. He just has to adjust to the league adjusting.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
That was confusing on my part. Each time I say "he" I mean Sowers.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
Yea, I figured as much.  The problem with letting Sower pitch is that he will not be consistent and would put the team in a losing situation which is not conducive to a winning season.  I say use him as a spot starter/reliever which gives him experience but at your choice.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
How do you know he will not be consistent? He has been all through the minors (showing flashes of the vaunted "stuff"). Could you not make the same argument about him last year as you do Bartolo? He was done in by a bit of bad luck and some niggling delivery issues that he seemed to correct. His last start he showed a better fastball and struck out 5.

And what of Lee? He has been better than servicable his entire career and has a great contract and yet you discard him as well. Colon is old, really fat, and has one good year since 2003 to his credit. He is a huge injury risk and his upside is greatly diminshed. Adam Miller represents all that could go right with Colon and we already have him.

Dealing with it.

I think E5 has a Colon Indians jersey he is eager to pull out of mothballs.

Purchased in March of 2002 and only worn twice.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
I guess this is probably a rhetorical question, since you won't respond anyways...but, aren't painting yourself into a corner by saying "Laffey has not had enough starts to prove he is capable of doing so"? Wouldn't the answer be to allow Laffey to have more starts so that he can then prove he is capable?

I think, that as of today, we look at Cliff Lee as the probable 5th starter, heading into spring training. Having Laffey (22), Sowers (24), and Adam Miller (23 as of next month) in AAA at the start of next season wouldn't be that bad of situation. Obviously Miller is the man we would like to see force his way ASAP because of his high ceiling as a front of the rotation type starter, but until that happens we have three other guys who could fill the 5th starter spot. That is way way way more than many teams.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
wait.

are you advocating acquiring another overwieght pitcher - after your diatribe on CC?  It sounds like you're dismissing his health problems as bad luck.  But CC had a few bad starts because he's a lard-ass, right?  I'm shocked by this development doctor, if I am reading your thoughts on this and that matter correctly.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
The Mariner article was well written, but Bartolo Colon's record the past 2 years is atrocious.  The USS Mariner piece is about a team that signed Jeff Weaver earlier this year to a 1 yr. 8 million dollar contract (or was it higher). I think Boras was his agent. Hard to think that a FO can be so naive.
Colon is fat and out of shape.  We don't need too many of those, they don't wear well over time.  Hence his various injuries.
I would rather take my chances, and go with Laffey (remember his pitching vs. the Red Sox in the ALCS) or Sowers.  I think the latter could (again) surprise the Indians next year, although in a good way this time.  His final start of the season (OK, it was against the KC Royals) was encouraging.  He hit 91 on his fastball.
Of course, Adam Miller is the strongest choice, based on potential, but injuries keep retarding his progress. In spring training this year, after no earned runs in 14 innings, the Indians promptly shipped Miller off to Buffalo.
My vote is to resign Bob Feller.  He could also replace Byrd, and as far as we know, he doesn't take any steroids.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
Definitely don't like the idea of paying an aging, overweight, injury prone player with diminished stuff 8 million dollars a year to be a fifth starter.

Colon may be intriguing for the Mariners to consider, but he is definitely not a viable option for us.

Gator fans have so much in common with Yankee fans. Minus the history and championships, of course.

Re: USS Mariner breaks down Bartolo
That's the difference - the Indians don't have to sign a pitcher, and the Mariners do.
