Brenly bitched about it for days afterwards, about the unwritten rules of baseball and all this nonsense, never once mentioning that Davis GOT THE TYING RUN TO THE PLATE, as if his pitcher's quest for a historical mark meant a goddamn thing to the other team trying to win the game.

Since then, I have never had any respect for Brenly as a baseball man.

Clutch comment over on Baseball-Analysts.com, in response to the series preview that Ryan co-wrote ...

I disagree with the analysts' preferences for the Indians' bullpen over the Yankees. In the playoffs, the quality of the top 3 in the pen takes on disproportionate importance because of the off-days.

Right.  Because your starters are so awesome, you couldn't possibly need more than two relievers.  And because Torre is so unconventional, he'll put in Rivera and Joba whenever he needs them.

I love Perez here.  It's the lefty part of the lineup, and there may not be any low-leverage innings in this series.  A six-run lead against this lineup is not enough with 12 outs left to go.

If you're referring to the announcer on the TBS
Yankees-Indians telecast tonight, that IS Chip Carey, NOT Skip.

Hello gte619n,

Chip is Skip's son, and like his father, he too is now at TBS, either beginning this year or last year.

Chip used to be on the FOX baseball pregame show about 3-5 years ago, the place where Jeannie Zelasko now occupies.  Chip then went to Chicago to do Cubs telecasts, just like his famous grandfather Harry Carey did.  But, either in 2006 or 2007, Chip joined his father Skip in Atlanta, and the Carey who was on the Yankees-Indians telecast was Chip, NOT Skip.

Just FYI.  :-)

Analyst: "Well, it depends on what he and Carl Willis decided.  He might be having trouble getting the ball down, but it might be how they decided to attack the Yankee lineup!"

  1. its the first playoff game you want to go with your best even in a lopsided game.

  2. These guys are well rested and we have off days that in the regular season we don't

  3. Carmona

  4. Our bullpen is better

  5. Its the playoffs, every game matters.

Great game - let's keep it going!
Hello everyone,

Great game all around tonight - I loved the "patient" approach we took to the Yankees (they're not the only ones who can be patient, and not the only ones who have been patient all year - no offense, but someone needs to fill Tony Gwynn in on that.)  I also loved how we took what the pitcher gave us and used the whole field - this was more the offense we seen in the first two months of the season when we were scoring 6+ runs a game almost nightly.  If we can do this on a regular basis in the postseason, I think we can go far.

As for Sabathia, he may not have been on tonight, but the one thing he did do that I'm not sure he would have done the last time he faced the Yankees (2004) or earlier was get out of that inning with the lead.  That was HUGE in my opinion, coming back from a 3-0 count to strike out Posada with the bases loaded and the Indians clinging to a 1-run lead.  Then he got Matsui to pop up on a 2-0 count.  Outstanding work there by CC (Mr. Dolan, please resign him!  :-)

Plus, like I said before, I think CC might be under the weather; his voice sounded raspy in a pregame interview, making his "gritty" performance all that much more special in my opinion.

The bullpen was great as well, with arguably the 3 relievers I trust most out of that pen - Perez, Lewis, Betancourt.  Personally, I have no problem using them - only Perez went 2 IP, so Lewis and Betancourt should both be available for tomorrow, and Perez could probably get a hitter or two out if need be, especially since you have the off-day on Saturday.  Plus, as Andrew mentioned, getting their playoff debut and all the associated butterflies and nerves that may come with it out of the way could be a very good thing later in this series.  That's what the Yankees were doing by having Ohlendorf, Hughes, and Veras (who I'm not very familiar with) pitch in this game when the outcome was nearly decided.

So, overall, I had no problem with Wedge's bullpen usage, and of course, I was very happy with the overall outcome of this game.  :-)

I hope Carmona is on tomorrow - he hasn't pitched since last Wednesday in game 1 of that DH with Seattle, so that's 8 days off - I hope that bullpen session allows him to find his command quickly.  Hopefully, we can apply a similar offensive approach to Pettitte and score early and often against him as well.  May the bullpen also be as effective as it was tonight, provided we need relievers to come in and pitch.

Let's keep this going!  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
