Game Thread: October 5, 2007

New York at Cleveland, 5:07 PM (TBS)
American League Division Series (CLE 1-0)

Starting Pitchers:

Cleveland: Fasuto Carmona (215.0 IP, 3.06 ERA, 116 PRC)
New York: Andy Pettitte (215.1 IP, 4.05 ERA, 90 PRC)

The big decision here is whether to go with Kenny Lofton or Jason Michaels in the starting lineup. Left-handers (.836 OPS) actually hit better against Pettite than right-handers (.727 OPS). Lofton, though, hasn't hit Pettitte at all (.125/.200/.156, 32 AB) in his career, while Michaels is hitting .375/.400/.500 in 10 AB.

Update [2007-10-5 15:56:45 by Ryan]: Michaels is in the lineup - but in right field. Lofton's in left, and Gutierrez is on the bench.

I think you start Michaels. We can bounce Pettitte in 4, and then substitute Lofton when the Yanks go to their righty-only bullpen.

Funny comment, considering Michaels has 139 career games in CF, and Gutierrez has 17.

When we acquired Michaels, he had played 91 games in left, 138 in center, and 48 in right.  He and Lofton platooned in center for the 2005 Phillies.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I like starting Lofton, but not Michaels at the expense of Gutz.  Granted, with Carmona on the mound, you should have more ground balls than flys, but Michaels is .248/.292/.314 since the All-Star break.  Don't mess with a lineup that scored 12 last night.

Actually, I'd like to see Gutz and JMike and sit Kenny til we get to their bullpen.

JMike and Kenny usta platoon in Philly and that worked pretty well - don't see why it wouldn't work now.

Especially since the Yankees don't have any lefties in their bullpen. You have to start Gutz and Michaels. Wedge is trying to keep with the hot hand, I hope that it works, but I disagree with the move and the reasoning behind it.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I go the opposite way.  I'd be happy with a Michaels/Lofton swap.  As someone mentioned last week in a game thread, I'm happy with Gutz going out there and playing everyday even if he doesn't really do anything special on offense...just because of his defense.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I personally like the lineup and this second guessing of Wedge is a little over the top.  He did a good job of managing the team last night save for in the first when Grady wasn't running to set the tone.  That said Grady has to get better jumps and needs to study the pitchers much better.  There will be no running game tonight with Pettite on the mound.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
not so much second guessing as trying to understand something that doesn't, at first blush, make much sense.

kenny is on fire, leaving him in left makes sense to me.  but preferring michaels to gutz in right vs pettitt confuses me.

michaels 2007 vs LHP:  287 359 441
gutz 2007 vs LHP:      330 366 553

not even close.  and the difference defensively is, in my opinion, considerable.  not that michaels is a hack--gutz is just that good.

one consideration is that micheals has been a bit hotter lately than gutz generally:

michaels sept/oct:  313 405 344
gutz sept/oct:      247 305 424

but i liked the walks and the patience last night from the gutz.  anyway, i don't get it.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
We have a one game lead, and Wedge tries to give everyone at least a small share of the figurative pie, even if they're not the most likely candidates for the literal pie.  If necessary, it's easy to swap out Michaels or Lofton later on.  If J-Mike doesn't play now, when will he?

That's all I've got.  I don't have a grasp the playoffs.  I'd rather see Gutz in, but I'm trying to get psyched about Michaels just because..

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
Granderson may have had a slightly better season, but Sizemore is younger and is a more complete hitter.  We lament Sizemore's struggles against lefties (.242/.323/.393), but Granderson simply can't hit them at all (.202/.265/.366).  Plus, Sizemore walks twice as much.  I'll take Grady.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
i'm going with wedge at this point, even if i don't get it either.

look, i hated the the raffy-l, jensen, raffly-r decisions last night until i thought about it a bit more this morning.

if carmona is a horse tonight, wedge made the perfect call: he nailed down game one, gave the three their first post-season experience with almost no pressure (where they dominated), and will not need them until sunday.

if carmona stumbles, we've got mastny (who i think has a pretty good era against the yanks this year) to go 2 or 3 and still can use raffy-l and lewis (raffy-l can go two days in a row and lewis threw like 8 pitches last night).  yes, this means we'd be depending on mastny, but at a certain point that's exactly the type of thing that turns out well for teams that go all the way.

yes...i'm getting a bit off-topic.  but i'm nervous as hell.  so forgive me.

anyhow, i guess the point is this: everyone hated hargrove for going by the book.  wedge ain't doing that, but isn't that what separates the competent managers from the ones who can influence the outcome of a game? isn't that exactly the type of manager we're looking for?

Darn it!
Our inexperience didn't help there - Cabrera jumped on a pitch he shouldn't have gone for, Pronk is struggling (again,) and Victor probably didn't go for the best pitch in that AB either (the one he let go by.)

Darn it - to be down by one run on a pitch that I don't know how Cabrera kept fair.  Our execution and fundamentals need to be better.

Come on Indians - don't lose 1-0.  Find a way to score and win this ballgame!

Re: Darn it!
Pronk is struggling?  He struck out against a good lefty.  Failed to check one of his swings, but other than that, his eye was fine.

by Jay on Oct 5, 2007 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No offense, but there was NO reason to go
after that pitch he didn't check on, as it was above his head, and I agree that he really didn't have good swings in that AB.

You can give some of the credit in that AB to Pettitte, but it also looked like Pronk's swing was a bit long to me, that he didn't shorten up like he probably should have.  In fact, a lot of the swings tonight look to be long - that's why we haven't made solid contact against a guy who only hits the low-90s - his ball has some late movement, yes, but we don't have the short, quick strokes we had last night, outside of Lofton and Michaels' hits.

Plus, I believe Pronk has only had 1 hit in 2 games so far, the HR he got on the meatball from Wang, so I wouldn't say he's hot or has had great ABs either, no offense.  I think we'll expecting a bit more out of Pronk than we've gotten so far.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Arrgh - we keep letting opportunities slip away!
Darn it - Gutz with a poor at-bat; one of the main reasons Joba has been so dominant in my opinion is because a lot of hitters will chase his pitches out of the strike zone, just like Gutz did there.  To have a reasonable chance against Joba, you have to be disciplined enough to go after pitches in the zone.  Gutz didn't do that.

Casey did, and still didn't get a hit, but his AB was considerably better than Gutz's.

It's going to be very disappointing if we lose 1-0.  Come on Indians - get some runs across in the next 2 innings.

Hello Jay,

Nixon's only 3-17 against Rivera in his career, with 5 BB/3 K, and 0 HRs, so I don't know why Wedge didn't go with Nixon in that last inning.  Maybe he didn't want to "use" 2 players with Nixon pinch-hitting, since Gutz would have probably come in to play defense anyway, taking Nixon out of the game.

I discovered my problem. I took off my Tribe cap when it got too warm, and I just now realized I never put it back on. Trust me, it's resting on my head now. And Fausto is rolling!

I have a feeling that Jobu could unravel very quickly.  Just need to get one or two hits.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I wish Carmona had the magical, stupendous ability to "work into and then out of trouble" like Pettite.  He only seems to have the pedestrian ability to just stay out of trouble altogether, a talent so commonplace that it's not worthy of mention.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
Yeah, Pettite might've done better if he hadn't bothered giving up all those pesky baserunners in the first place.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
Who's going to get a HR to get us back?  We haven't been too successful with the baserunner approach.  Peralta had the right idea but he was a few feet off in execution.

with the way he's played today, it's gotta be Asdrubal.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
Seriously, these guys are just awful. They make Meinksak... a hero but say that Carmona is losing focus.  Thats funny because Carmona retired him.

Went to a game in June a few years ago that was TOTALLY infested with mayflies. It was really weird, kinda surreal.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
Joba is more likely to lose focus due to the bugs then Carmona.  Carmona has been in and focused for some time, Joba really is just new to the game.

i remember this used to happen at the old stadium, it being closer to the lake.

hamilton once informed the audience that the name of the bug in question was a "muckle".
