Game Thread: October 5, 2007

New York at Cleveland, 5:07 PM (TBS)
American League Division Series (CLE 1-0)

Starting Pitchers:

Cleveland: Fasuto Carmona (215.0 IP, 3.06 ERA, 116 PRC)
New York: Andy Pettitte (215.1 IP, 4.05 ERA, 90 PRC)

The big decision here is whether to go with Kenny Lofton or Jason Michaels in the starting lineup. Left-handers (.836 OPS) actually hit better against Pettite than right-handers (.727 OPS). Lofton, though, hasn't hit Pettitte at all (.125/.200/.156, 32 AB) in his career, while Michaels is hitting .375/.400/.500 in 10 AB.

Update [2007-10-5 15:56:45 by Ryan]: Michaels is in the lineup - but in right field. Lofton's in left, and Gutierrez is on the bench.

I think you start Michaels. We can bounce Pettitte in 4, and then substitute Lofton when the Yanks go to their righty-only bullpen.

Funny comment, considering Michaels has 139 career games in CF, and Gutierrez has 17.

When we acquired Michaels, he had played 91 games in left, 138 in center, and 48 in right.  He and Lofton platooned in center for the 2005 Phillies.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I like starting Lofton, but not Michaels at the expense of Gutz.  Granted, with Carmona on the mound, you should have more ground balls than flys, but Michaels is .248/.292/.314 since the All-Star break.  Don't mess with a lineup that scored 12 last night.

Actually, I'd like to see Gutz and JMike and sit Kenny til we get to their bullpen.

JMike and Kenny usta platoon in Philly and that worked pretty well - don't see why it wouldn't work now.

Especially since the Yankees don't have any lefties in their bullpen. You have to start Gutz and Michaels. Wedge is trying to keep with the hot hand, I hope that it works, but I disagree with the move and the reasoning behind it.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I go the opposite way.  I'd be happy with a Michaels/Lofton swap.  As someone mentioned last week in a game thread, I'm happy with Gutz going out there and playing everyday even if he doesn't really do anything special on offense...just because of his defense.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
I personally like the lineup and this second guessing of Wedge is a little over the top.  He did a good job of managing the team last night save for in the first when Grady wasn't running to set the tone.  That said Grady has to get better jumps and needs to study the pitchers much better.  There will be no running game tonight with Pettite on the mound.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
not so much second guessing as trying to understand something that doesn't, at first blush, make much sense.

kenny is on fire, leaving him in left makes sense to me.  but preferring michaels to gutz in right vs pettitt confuses me.

michaels 2007 vs LHP:  287 359 441
gutz 2007 vs LHP:      330 366 553

not even close.  and the difference defensively is, in my opinion, considerable.  not that michaels is a hack--gutz is just that good.

one consideration is that micheals has been a bit hotter lately than gutz generally:

michaels sept/oct:  313 405 344
gutz sept/oct:      247 305 424

but i liked the walks and the patience last night from the gutz.  anyway, i don't get it.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
We have a one game lead, and Wedge tries to give everyone at least a small share of the figurative pie, even if they're not the most likely candidates for the literal pie.  If necessary, it's easy to swap out Michaels or Lofton later on.  If J-Mike doesn't play now, when will he?

That's all I've got.  I don't have a grasp the playoffs.  I'd rather see Gutz in, but I'm trying to get psyched about Michaels just because..

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
Granderson may have had a slightly better season, but Sizemore is younger and is a more complete hitter.  We lament Sizemore's struggles against lefties (.242/.323/.393), but Granderson simply can't hit them at all (.202/.265/.366).  Plus, Sizemore walks twice as much.  I'll take Grady.

Re: Game Thread: October 5, 2007
i'm going with wedge at this point, even if i don't get it either.

look, i hated the the raffy-l, jensen, raffly-r decisions last night until i thought about it a bit more this morning.

if carmona is a horse tonight, wedge made the perfect call: he nailed down game one, gave the three their first post-season experience with almost no pressure (where they dominated), and will not need them until sunday.

if carmona stumbles, we've got mastny (who i think has a pretty good era against the yanks this year) to go 2 or 3 and still can use raffy-l and lewis (raffy-l can go two days in a row and lewis threw like 8 pitches last night).  yes, this means we'd be depending on mastny, but at a certain point that's exactly the type of thing that turns out well for teams that go all the way.

yes...i'm getting a bit off-topic.  but i'm nervous as hell.  so forgive me.

anyhow, i guess the point is this: everyone hated hargrove for going by the book.  wedge ain't doing that, but isn't that what separates the competent managers from the ones who can influence the outcome of a game? isn't that exactly the type of manager we're looking for?
