Shows TBS is a rookie at this postseason thing!
Hello Erik,

I know - granted, Pronk got the clutch hit to win it, but who's the one who matched Pettitte, the one with 35 postseason starts (or whatever it is) pitch-for-pitch, and arguably, outduelled Pettitte?

Carmona goes 9 IP of 3 H, 1 ER ball, Pettitte goes 6.1 IP of 7 H, 0 ER ball, but should have given up at least one on Peralta's near HR ball, plus was fortunate to get out of two other close scrapes, so frankly, he wasn't as dominant as Carmona was.

So, certainly, Carmona was a worthy candidate for the Player of the Game.  Besides that, Pronk got the pie last night - he's going to get two straight pies?  That doesn't seem like the norm in the pie giving over the season - I believe the stats suggest no player gets a pie twice in a row.

Also, a special thanks to the squirrel and the gnats for their "support" - it's always nice to know Mother Nature is on your side - may it continue!  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Shows TBS is a rookie at this postseason thing
Hey Joe.  I don't want to slight Pettitte.  He pitched well.  Well enough to win, except that Fausto pitched both better and deeper into the game.  He made one bad pitch that got punished, Pettitte was in trouble with the first hitter of most of the innings that he pitched.  So I guess I'm not sure that I agree that you could even argue the point.

It does kind of seem incredible that Joba basically got pestered off of his game.  I mean, talk about destiny.

-Erik

by drerikbrady on Oct 5, 2007 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Pettitte pitched well certainly, but TBS was
essentially giving him all the credit, whereas we helped him get out of some of those jams by chasing pitches we really should not have been chasing (like Hafner chasing that pitch up around or above his head, for instance.)  And like I mentioned, Pettitte was fortunate Peralta's ball didn't get out because that mistake was hit very hard; a few inches more to the right, and the game is tied right there 1-1.

Hello Erik,

Certainly, Pettitte did pitch well, and shut us down more than I thought he would, but he certainly had a fair number of breaks as well, something you wouldn't really realize if you just went by the TBS broadcast - I think they blew up every Yankee positive to be about 5-10X bigger or better than it really was.  That's why I finally decided to mute those guys - it was actually better watching the game with no sound (didn't put the sound back on until after Hafner got the game-winning hit.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Maybe, Barfield other then that I have confidence in everyone.  A great win to say the least.  This is the type of game I wasn't sure we could win going into the playoff but this team has really grown up and there is no type of game this team can't win right now.  I think we finish them off in New York and end Roger Clemens career in a bad way.

I didn't read the game threads yet ... but did anyone else think that Gomez should have batted in place of Asdrubal in the 11th? The kid was clearly pressing tonight.

Also, since he hit into 2 double plays .. why not try a suicide squeeze there with Kenny at 3rd? The chances of bunting into a DP would be slim to none.

Just fun second guessing ... dont get all worked up about it.

Re: Decompression Thread
I'll bite. I would've been ok with Gomez. He's a good defender, not a liability, and he's much more of a "professional" hitter than Cabrera.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if anybody can do things like sac fly and sac bunt, it's a guy like Gomez. Don't guys like him have to be able to do all of that stuff?

I dunno. I never really played baseball. I feel confident in saying that bunting is largely an effort/practice things for guys at the major league level but I don't know if that's true of hitting sac flies. I feel like Gomez would be better at than Drubs but I'm talking out of my ass.

by afh4 on Oct 5, 2007 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Decompression Thread
AstroCab's bunting wasn't the trouble. It was the hacktastic ABs when the team needed a hit or sac fly.

Re: Decompression Thread
Drubs is a great bunter, no question.

I'm confused by that entire skill set-sac bunting, sac flies, hitting to the right side, etc.

Some guys are clearly very good bunters, naturally. Other guys get criticized or not practicing it enough.

When a guy can't hit to the right side or hit a sac fly, people act like he just didn't want to or wasn't concentrating.

I dunno. I have no idea how hard this stuff is on a major league level.

I don't think it worked out quite the way he planned, but it was a nice way of admitting the other than the two of them (who happen to human after all), the Yankee bullpen sucks ass.

lost in Bug Gate were all of the good plays last night that no one, at least on the NY side has talked about..Grady's diving catch, Astro's play where he ranged very very far to his left, Garko's snag, Grady beating out the strikeout throw to first and knocking over the first baseman..I mean, it's really surreal that all of this happened in one game. Re: Decompression Thread
I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty emotionally drained right now.  Happy, but very, very tired.  I was watching the game at a good friend's house, who also happens to be a yankee fan.  I could tell that he was nervous as hell with just a one-run lead most of the night.  He was talking all kinds of trash too, but I just let it bounce off as I watched Fausto make Rodriguez look stupid.

As awesome as the ending was, this was such a frustrating game to watch.  I think I almost puched a hole in the wall after Grady got stranded on third.  My friend was wearing a "Joba Rules" shirt during the eigth inning when we tied it, which was awesome (he promptly took it off the next inning).

Fausto vs. Rodriguez late in the game was probably one of the most epic at-bats I'll ever see.  I didn't move from my spot in the room the rest of the game, for fear of jinxing it.  For whatever reason, my friend kept calling an ARod homerun before he struck out.  He got really quiet after that, although I think I sprained something in my jaw from shouting so much.  I knew we were going to win after that, between Perez and all those walk-off wins I've seen before.  Just a hunch.  I'm definitely keeping a copy of this game; just amazing.

Couple of funny Nixon-Clemens articles from the NY Times from 2000 and 2001. Note the 2nd article by Buster Olney describing Nixon as "Clemens's primary nemesis on the Red Sox". Granted this was 6 years ago, and Nixon certainly is not close to the same player, but do we really think Clemens is nearly the same pitcher? I personally vote for two at-bats then a switch to Gutz ASAP.
