Three thoughts

Two things that bode well and Jeter

Star-divide

There were 2 things that occurred last night that didn't necessarily affect the outcome but made me more sanguine about the post season.

Hafner hit a one-iron that had it been any lower would have gone through the wall.  I don't think that it is any surprise to readers here that we need at least an 80% version of his Pronkness.

The bullpen, especially Rafael left and JLewis, got their feet wet in non-pressure situations.  These guys are huge and I'm happy that they may have gotten some jitters out in this fashion.

Regarding Jeter, I lived in NYC and had endless debates that went like this:

Me:  "I love Derek Jeter and would kill to have him be my shortstop but he is not a plus defender because he can't  go to his left"

Them:  "Yeah but how many rings does he have!"

Last night there were three singles through the middle of which a "gold glover" gets to at least one if not two.  Jeter has no first step to his left and his cross-over footwork can be best described as an awkward skipping.  Go look at the highlights - this is especially clear on one of Lofton's singles.

Re: Three thoughts
But Jeter goes back on popups better than anyone, like, evar.

Re: Three thoughts
Yeah, Lofton's second single is probably caught by a shortstop with any kind of range/first step.

Granted, Peralta doesn't make that play either.

Re: Three thoughts
Yeah but nobody in their right mind touts Peralta as a goldglover...

Re: Three thoughts
Jeter isn't just touted, he actually is given Gold Gloves.  I'm still dumbfounded when I think about that.

Especially with so many other great shortstops in the league.

Re: Three thoughts
Without even attempting to figure out who the best one really is, I'll just say if it's between Jeter and Orlando Cabrera, Cabrera should win by unanimous vote.

That said ... at least as far as THT's metrics go, Tony Pena Jr.'s numbers are bordering on insane.

Re: Three thoughts
A lot of Jeter's "misplays" had more to do with his positioning, rather than his range.

Does that fall on him or the manager/scouting? Who knows?

Re: Three thoughts
Kind of a chicken-egg thing there. Jeter's positioning is always going to be a matter of guesswork since his limited range prevents him from playing a more traditional short. Might just be me -- I think Rodriguez plays fairly far back and off the line. One possible explanation is that this allows Jeter to cheat up the middle.

Re: Three thoughts
I guess it could, but Jeter didn't have that far to go.

Re: Three thoughts
I don't think it's positioning, I think it's reaction -- that first half-second, when no cameras and few eyes are on him.  A chronic positioning problem could and would be corrected without too much effort, I believe.

Re: Three thoughts
Heard this in passing a few weeks ago on The Jim Rome Show when Orlando Cabrera took a thinly veiled shot at Jeter in a discussion on why Cabrera only has one Gold Glove.

He mentioned that he puts himself in position based on the batter and his tendencies, while Jeter plays every hitter the same...resulting in him making his off balance, flip throw, ESPN highlight plays.  Cabrera basically said that he just plays the ball more naturally because he is in better position.
