Clemens Off Roster; Villone Back On . . . .

Just noticed this while perusing the web.  I don't suppose there is too much news here, other than that the Yanks now have a lone lefty in their pen for the remainder of the series.

Clemens.  What a waste of money.  What a waste of media attention.

I'll take his 2+ innings or work which yielded 3 runs and a semi-gassed bullpen.

Yep, those two+ innings cost 'ole George morethan $360k.

$18.5 million in pro-rated salary
99 Regular Seasons IP
2+ Playoff IP

$181+k / IP

You can't forget the 40% luxury tax on the salary.

$26 million salary + marginal tax expense
99 regular season IP
2.33 playoff IP

$256,579 per IP

Re: Clemens Off Roster; Villone Back On . . . .
This new rule about injury substitutions has to go.  There's enough manipulation going on already with post-season rosters (e.g., Brad Snyder on the DL), but this goes to far.

Who says Roger is really hurt?  Why shouldn't the Indians sub now for Westbrook, since he won't appear again?  Or Trot, since he's only there to hit off Clemens?

Bottom line, it was the Yankees choice to give a roster slot to this broken down old man.  They should have to live with it.

The rule says, anyone removed for injury in the Division Series is ineligible for the LCS.  Anyone removed in the LCS is ineligible for the World Series.

MLB also has to approve each move, and I don't think you'll see many phantom injuries getting approved.

Re: Clemens Off Roster; Villone Back On . . . .
Out of curiosity has MLB ever denied a roster move during the postseason of the sort we are seeing here?

It's actually a brand-new rule, and I believe this is the first time it's even been invoked.  Before this year, teams couldn't make injury substitutions mid-series.

Re: Clemens Off Roster; Villone Back On . . . .
Thanks for the answer.

It's hard to imagine the league dictating to a team which players can and cannot be replaced, though. At least not without a potentially huge backlash should the league deem a player ineligible to be removed from the roster.

Re: Clemens Off Roster; Villone Back On . . . .
Maybe, but the league faces a backlash in either direction -- if an injury claim is dubious, the other team will cry foul.  MLB has little incentive not to make an honest call.

There is an argument that they should have rejected this one, and that is that Clemens (as the Game Three starter) would not have been expected to be available for any of the other games anyway.  But that kind of logic is probably not part of the rules.
