Minor League Free Agents
Baseball America has this year's list of minor league free agents up on their website (no subscription required). These are guys who haven't been added to their team's 40-man roster and have completed the exclusive control period of their service time.
These guys are now free to sign minor or major league deals with any franchise.
The Indians have 16:
Bobby Brownlie
Jake Dittler
Mike Koplove
Cliff Politte
Jim Ed Warden
Eric Dubose
Mariano Gomez
Mike Rose
Trent Durrington
Argenis Reyes
Keith Ginter
Rodney Choy Foo
Anthony Medrano
Mike Rouse
Dennis Malave
Jonathan Van Every
Most of these guys shouldn't illicit more than a yawn. I'd expect a few of the guys, especially some of the relief pitchers, to resign with Cleveland. A guy like Van Every, who'd probably be a decent 5th OF on a NL team but who's way down the line in Cleveland, is probably gone. Aside from Van Every, Mariano Gomez and Rodney Choy Foo are probably the most interesting guys. Gomez was once (a long time ago) on the Indians 40-man. He's struggled with finger/hand problems but was pretty successful out of the bullpen in Akron this year (albeit with mediocre peripherals). Choy Foo, everyone's favorite Hawaiian, is the kind of guy with an outside chance of being a future Casey Blake super-utility kind of guy.

Re: Minor League Free Agents
...those players who, for a 12-24 month stretch during rebuilding phases, you somehow convince yourself are on the verge of becoming valuable parts of an emerging "shock the world" team.
until reality gets a hold of you. and, a few years later, when you hear their name and remember that team, you think to yourself: "god, i was abslutely delusional."
bill selby is the first inductee into the "beau allred syndrome ring of champions" for being a living, breathing personification of the malady.

Re: Minor League Free Agents
If they're selected in the Rule 5 draft, they get added to that team's 40-man roster and are on a major league contract. For that matter, their current team could still add them to the 40-man and keep them.

Re: Minor League Free Agents
My cousin was a SR at Tulane when Aubrey was a freshman and they went to the CWS, and Aubrey absolutely raked. I was pumped when the Tribe drafted him. Not so much anymore...

Re: Minor League Free Agents
How ironic would it be if the Indians helped Bronwlie make it after not succeeding with Guthrie?
There is, of course, a key contractual difference. Boras got Guthrie a major league contract, meaning he had to be on the 40-man immediately and would be out of options after 2006. Brownlie didn't get a deal like that and has never been on the 40-man roster -- he was in fact exposed to Rule 5 last year but not selected.
The main point being, if we decide to add Brownlie, he still has all three option years remaining. And the other point being, if Guthrie had had a normal minor league deal, we'd still have him. Still, you have to wonder how the Cubs got so sick of this guy that they just released him. It's not like he was costing them anything significant to keep around.

Thanks for the interview, Jay! :-)
Thanks - I was not aware that Brownlie was at one time more of a power groundball pitcher. I thought he was more a classic power pitcher (I knew he threw mid-90s at one time, but didn't realize his fastball had great sink at one point.) Also, I didn't realize about the 3 option years still remaining - that's always a nice "bonus" to have when it comes to a Minor League FA in my opinion.
That would make me rethink my original post, especially in regards to his low strikeouts. I wouldn't mind keeping him, especially since the Indians' organization has done some considerable work (especially with his front side) to help him improve, plus the fact it probably wouldn't cost much to keep him, so yes, I would try to keep him if at all possible - he could be a nice late-bloomer, perhaps have some success at the ML level at some point like Guthrie is doing for the Orioles.
Again, thanks for the article post - it certainly helps to clarify Bobby Brownlie's position and abilities. :-)

He might not be a bad guy to hold on to, but
Hello Rusnakjd,
According to The Baseball Cube, here are Brownlie's 2007 stats at AA Akron:
9 G, 8 GS, 1-2, 3.17 ERA, 48.1 IP/42 H/21 R/17 ER/5 HR/14 BB/37 K/4 WP, 1.16 WHIP
He just turned 27 in October, and he was drafted in the 1st Rd. of the 2002 Draft by the Cubs, one spot ahead of the Indians drafting Jeremy Guthrie.
Why I say that it probably wouldn't hurt much if we did lose him is because, some over at MinorLeagueBall.com who have heard and seen him more say that his stuff has regressed a bit from the days when he was drafted in the 1st Rd. (Sorry, can't find the link - this was a few months back when this was mentioned.) I don't recall if he had surgery (I think he did, but am not entirely sure of that,) but I think he has missed some time in the past with an injury, which hasn't helped his progression through the Minors.
Plus, looking over his track record more, he still hasn't totally figured out AAA - he had a decent year at AAA Iowa at age 24 in 2005:
6-7, 4.74 ERA, 27 G/14 GS/104.1 IP/98 H/56 R/55 ER/11 HR/42 BB/73 K/4 WP/1 BK, 1.34 WHIP
but wasn't all that great mostly coming out of the AAA Iowa bullpen in 2006 (SSS understood):
0-3, 10.80 ERA, 8 G/1 GS/11.2 IP/24 H/15 R/14 ER/4 HR/6 BB/14 K, 2.57 WHIP
As a reliever, he might be an interesting option, but outside of the 8 games he appeared in for AAA Iowa in 2006 (14 K in 11.2 IP,) his K rate really hasn't benefited that much from moving to the bullpen (staying between 6-7 K/9 IP for the most part, which is decent, but not great,) so I don't know if he'd be a high-K reliever at the ML level.
I think if he stays, he could be a nice option, but he'd really have to perform better than he did in 2007 (including a very poor AA postseason that included giving up 6 ER in 3.1 IP in Akron's final game of their season against the Yankees' AA EL-Champion Trenton team) to really force the issue (and 8 of the 9 games he appeared in for AA Akron in 2007 was as a starter,) as I think we have younger, better options with more potential than Brownlie. Therefore, I don't think losing him would hurt that much.
Just my 2 cents. :-)
