ABJ/CPD Articles

Just a head's up here to catch a few articles.

S.O. @ The ABJ has a pretty uneventful article up this morning about our interest in Dan Haren.  Sounds crazy, I know, but I'm excited to be the one breaking the story here on LGT. Is anybody interested in trade speculation? link

Hoynes wrote a similar, but more interesting article for the PD. News here: interest has also been shown in Blanton (boring) and Erik Bedard (fresh meat! speculation mania!).  On the notes side, Inge is mentioned (we passed) as well as news about the proposed Jason Bay package which might shock many here (no Lee or Shoppach). link

On the good news front, Lara is breathing, talking, and potentially on his way back to the states for surgery. I'd say something to the effect that this is fantastic news, but I'm not a good enough writer to make it anything but an understatement.

I wouldn't give a bag of baseballs for Inge.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
I was just about to post something along these lines.

The Lara news is very promising, especially because it seemingly came from nowhere.  He was in a coma and all of a sudden he's breathing on his own and talking.  Wonderful.

As for Inge, I rolled him over in my mind when news came out that he was requesting a trade.  It's the contract that makes him unattractive for me.  Also of note is that Hoynes is the first person I've seen report that the Pirates are "close" to getting him.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
My god, Shocker is such a complete jagoff.

The Major Leauge peices rumored for Bay never made sense to me - It had to be younger guys in my mind to make sense for them.  I think those were lazy pittsburgh beat writers guessing.

Great news about Lara. Get that man some visas.

Inge, Rolen. glad neither of those went anywhere.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
Just fleshing it out a bit from the San Francisco Chronicle:

Haren continues to be one of the more hotly rumored names in trade talks, with Cleveland the most recent team to be linked with the right-hander, although the Indians are unlikely to part with rookie second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, who was believed to be an A's target.

The Indians could move three top pitching prospects for Haren, however, and though that would leave Cleveland thin for future seasons, the package might be more attractive than the best offer to date, a four-to-five prospect proposal from Arizona.

This trade has almost reached the level of being talked about enough that we know it won't happen.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
If the three pitching prospects are Miller, Lofgren and Laffey I say F off. Now, Miller, Lofgren and Sowers, I think about.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
My absolute favorite parts of the piece:

A rotation of Sabathia, Carmona, Haren, Westbrook and Byrd would certainly help neutralize the beast that Detroit's lineup has become with the addition of Miguel Cabrera, Edgar Renteria and Jacque Jones. It would also offer protection for the future with Sabathia and Byrd free agents after the 2008 season.

Seriously, Jacque Jones? I'm damn near happy they acquired him.

More:

No dice:

The Indians talked briefly about trying to acquire displaced third baseman Brandon Inge after the Tigers acquired Cabrera at the winter meetings, but decided against it. The Pirates are apparently close to acquiring Inge and starting him at third.

What would it take for Marte to get a real shot? Jeez.

ALSO! For those who think Beane is a master trader, think about the Hudson and Mulder deals.

  1. Hudson for pitchers Juan Cruz and Dan Meyer and outfielder Charles Thomas from Atlanta.
  2. Mulder for reliever Kiko Calero, Haren and catcher Daric Barton.

Those are two pretty garbage trades for what were assumed to be top pitchers.

I'd say Haren and Barton is nothing to sneeze at.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
OK, I didn't realize Barton is legit. Though, his ISOP jumped nearly 100 points last year after he jumped to the show, and his BABIP is outside the norms of his career.

But his walk rate and age are definitely sexy.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
What are you smoking GFP? The Mulder trade was sheer genius. Haren is one of the opt pitchers in the game and Barton was, until eligibility ran out, a highly regarded prospect with great plate discipline and developing power. Plus, Mulder fell apart right after the trade. If that isn't a perfect example of 'trading high', I don't know what it.

by crazymoloh on Dec 12, 2007 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
Saying that Mulder fell apart after the trade has no impact on his trade value. He wasn't hurt when he was traded.

And can I get a contract status update on those two when they were traded? If it was multiple years, I'll eat crow.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
The A's traded away Mulder after a season in which he posted a 4.43 ERA and there were concerns that he was hiding an injury (large first half, second half split). Plus, at the time of the trade, Mulder was entering the option year of his contract with the A's.

You can keep fighting for this notion that the Mulder trade was a bad one, but its going to fall on deaf ears.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
Contract status (till FA)

Mulder 1 year plus team option
Hudson 1 year

And yeah, the Huddy deal sucked.

(I'm a green & gold carded A's fan, so I'm exempt from contradictory comments on this matter.)

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
That Mulder trade is great. I'm not sure what part of it is garbage-acquiring a pitcher that's been better than Mulder from nearly the moment the trade happened, a reliever that helped the A's substantially during playoff runs, or a bat that's gonna play in the majors in Barton.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
What I'm trying to say, though perhaps not very effectively, that Mulder was recognized as a top flight pitcher, and Haren, though solid, was not recognized as great.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
Who cares what people 'recognized' at the time? The art of a great deal is premised on knowing something at others don't. Clearly Beane did.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
This is a point I'll disagree on. Just because Grady came out swimmingly at the time doesn't mean that the FO predicted him to. If a player exceeds their expectations, that's good. But to say we can look back on trades like this in hindsight and say "We knew Grady would be this good" is, I think, disingenuous.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
Meyer isn't quite dead yet - he's had some setbacks but should be in the majors this year.  At the time of the trade, nobody knew if Meyer or Haren would be better, so he was a good pitcher.  Anyway, if either one of them turned out to be as good as Haren did, the trades, on a whole, were successful.  You can't expect to get the better end of each individual trade, you need to examine the whole.

Nobody got the Thomas inclusion at the time, so no issues there.  Anyway, the Mulder trade was better, but he had two years left and got traded to St. Louis, who just got swept by Boston in the WS, so they may have been feeling a pinch.  Mind you, this was dumb for STL in retrospect. I specifically remember paying attention to this Haren kid when he came out of the pen in the WS.  His stuff was awesome, and I would have traded for him if the Cards were silly enough to let me as well.  Not quite as impressed as the first time I saw KRod pitch in the playoffs, but it wasn't far off.

I'm glad they looked into Inge, and I am disappointed they are not getting him (it is tough to trade with a rival). His defense has always greatly impressed me. I'd much prefer him to Marte.

Re: ABJ/CPD Articles
while i like Inge, his contract is not really attractive: 08-$6.2M, 09-$6.3M, 10-$6.6M.

I'm always weary of statements like "It's believed".  I want to know who the implied 'they' are.
