Haren to Arizona

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/14/SPQTTUU9P.DTL

"(12-14) 14:49 PST -- The A's have completed a trade to send Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks along with pitcher Connor Robertson, The Chronicle has learned.

In exchange, Oakland will receive a total of six prospects, including outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and left-handers Brett Anderson and Greg Smith. Arizona's first-round pick in 2006, pitcher Max Scherzer, is not a part of the deal."

Re: Haren to Arizona
Good moves by Arizona today. Yeah, they gave up a lot of prospects, but they're young enough (and have enough money to spend in the future) that they can afford to trade some young assets away for a guy like Haren. That Valverde trade is excellent, too.

It would still be nice to try for Chavez and Street, though I think you'll see Chavez go to the Dodgers in a Blanton trade.

by Kos on Dec 14, 2007 7:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Haren to Arizona
What's the point?  Other than Street being awesome?  Does there need to be another point?

Hell, I'd go after Blanton, too.  But the fact is that on any of these "obvious" trade targets, there's going to be a Winner's Curse dynamic.  ("The severity of the winner's curse increases with the number of bidders.")  Our guest grover was right that we probably have to be ready to go to at least 115% of "real value" to get anyone who's not "under the radar," in particular given the horrendous state of the free agent market.

Arizona needed Haren more than we did, and they were in a better position to acquire him.  Their team is even younger, their farm system still a bit more deep.  They basically fluked into a postseason spot, and unlike the Indians, nobody was about to project them for another 90 wins this season.  Our roster is more mature, and we won several more games, against tougher competition, and with quite a bit less luck.

Re: Haren to Arizona
I don't understand why you would sacrifice young players from our farm system for a reliever with questionable health issues when our bullpen is already one of the top ones in the AL.

Haren made sense because he could serve as a bridge in case CC left and he was durable.

Of all the components on our team, the bullpen is the least of the problems (for once in a decade).

Re: Haren to Arizona
our bullpen makes me very, very nervous....i'd rather have bedard over blanton but that would be good, too--lets trade some prospects, they cant all play you know.

by rustyparts on Dec 15, 2007 7:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Haren to Arizona
Blanton is a waste of time. I don't know why you'd go after him. Why don't we just start Laffey in the fifth spot, since it would probably cost us Laffey to aquire Blanton, since another team is likely going to overpay for Blanton coming off his best year ever. Its usually not a good idea to trade for players coming off their best seasons.

by hans on Dec 15, 2007 4:06 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Haren to Arizona
I also want to point out that, although some "flukiness" played a part, it wasn't all fluke. They simply used their best bullpen pitchers in games where they had a lead (and their best bullpen pitchers were markedly better than their poor bullpen pitchers), and used their lessor pitchers in blowouts. This allowed them to produce quite a few more wins than predicted. Using the same technique there is no reason to think that they couldn't repeat the same results all things being equal.

I don't know about that. Its not like people looking to buy a 2007 BMW go out and settle for an '86 Civic when the dealer runs out. I think there's very little intersection between the Lee market and the Haren market.

until last year Lee would have ranked as one of the better #4 starters, last year he was hurt, and had a bad attitude. but compare Haren to a 2007 BMW and Lee to a 86 Civic maybe a little off don't you think? Last year 7 teams combined starter had a ERA over 5.00
Pitt 5.02,Stl 5.04,Nats 5.11,Sea 5.16,Tampa 5.20,Texas 5.50,Fla 5.58
I can not believe that not one of these teams could not use Lee as a starter?

Re: Haren to Arizona
Only problem with Lee is that if he stays, Byrd is the 4, he is the 5 with Laffey and Sowers in AAA.

Lee won't be effective as a reliever, and we can't send him down. I'd much rather have Laffey as the 5 and Byrd as the 4. But that's just me.

I'm still praying Lee gets dealt this offseason.

Re: Haren to Arizona
Sounds like a total rebuild for the A's - they went with quantity over MLB ready guys.

Oh well. Have to admit, I was really hoping we could swing it for Haren. Thought it was one of the rare times we could get somebody like that with little damage to the immediate future. I love Shap, but sometimes I wish he was a little less risk-averse. But I guess that's moot unless/until we know what we offered in return.

Now sign CC and on to '08 and beyond. We're still a better team going into this year than last.

Not really interested in Blanton or Chavez. Maybe Street.

Re: Haren to Arizona
Yeah, but I'd like to be a fly on the wall right now, even if this bet/hold doesn't amount to much.

But if you could check out the book from some library in the future, it'd probably have to be one of two titles:

"Six Lumps of Coal For a Diamondback" - John Feinstein documents Arizona's surge to the World Series by trading a little later for now. Or...

"The Plan: How to Increase Fitness Gradually and Own Your Potential" - Mark Shapiro ghostwritten by Terry Pluto, in the wake of Adam Miller and Brad Snyder leading the Indians to their first world championship in 60 years by adhering to a systemwide culture of extreme excellence and forthright thriftiness.

Sorry, got carried away with the last one, sign CC dammit.

sbricker - are you sure Beane got the pronunciation right?  It sounds to me like Beane is still pronouncing it, as he's saying "Az_Doo_Bul," NOT "Az_Droo_Bul" ("doo" instead of "droo.")

All the more reason why he can't have him - he still doesn't know how to say his name, LOL!  :-)

Re: Haren to Arizona
Swisher would be the guy I would go after of those two.  One he is an "The Ohio State University" guy so you know he is going to be good.  He would fill our LF hole and would be around for at least the next 5 years and doesn't have a history of being a injury risk like Street.  Street has talent but lacks a clear medical history and would not be a big improvement due to the possibility that he would be hurt around half the time.  Elbow injuries don't get better, they only get worse over time.
