Alex Rios Rumors?

This one might be too good to be true.

MLBTR is reporting that the Jays and the Indians are talking about Alex Rios.  They mention Rios for Gutz and Cliff Lee.

Not sure what Rios's contract status is exactly; looks like he's under contract until 2010, but will cost more than Gutz.  With Cliff Lee in the deal, though, the money doesn't hurt.  Is it worth losing our outfielder with arguably as much upside as Rios and a pitcher that may burn us for an All-Star Right Fielder?  I think I'd do it, though it doesn't necessarily address our "needs." Update [2007-12-4 11:1:20 by CU Adam]:Sorry, should have a run a search through the Winter Meetings thread, this is already there. I flipped through but didn't see it. Jay or Ryan, you can delete. Thanks.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I like Rios, but I'm in love with Gutierrez's D in right field. I'd much, much, much rather do something like Lee + Francisco + anybody in our farm system besides Miller. Put Rios in left and you'd have one hell of an outfield.

Of course, I get that probably the only way the Jays do this deal is if they get Gutierrez in return. So I'd probably say no to this one.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I'd rather give up BenFran than Gutz, too, but I think I'd rather have Sizemore/Rios/Whatever platoon we're running this year in the outfield than Sizemore/Gutz/Whatever platoon.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I don't know, the "Winter Meetings" was a lot about Bay.  This is its own thing - might be good place to revive those "why Rios is awesome" posts from last time there were rumors about him.  Anyways - Bay vs. Rios?  Is there any question?
Officially starting up and driving the trade for Bedard bandwagon.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
It depends. If we definitely can't spin Cliff Lee for something better, than I do it. If we can, I would rather keep Gutz. I still think there is a chance that Gutz becomes a better player than Rios.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Jay had mentioned that Shoppach for Bay would be equal value, while Shoppach + Lee for Bay is paying too much. If he is right, perhaps we can pull down both deals.

Bay/Sizemore/Rios would hay ridiculous upside for 2008. That has to be good for at least 40 more runs.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I'd agree that, given the rumors and such that are out there, this would be the best case scenario for our outfield next year.  I don't think it's likely, but it'd be potentially a great outfield.

"would hay ridiculous upside"

I could be wrong but I think this is another grammatical error turned turn of phrase.  Brick, Tyler, you guys have a few seconds to hay a ruling?

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
i think if most people here had ties to say great brittan this might work, but a bunch of current/former mid-westerners like myself will be too inclined to read-pronounce 'hay' too sharply for this to work without the confusion cancelling out the enjoyment.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Keith Law was just on ESPN Radio and he said that Rios was on the block, but never mentioned Cleveland. He thinks Toronto is looking for pitching for Rios and brought up Oakland as a likely trade partner.

I honestly can't see Toronto trading Rios for Gutz and Lee. It would be nice, though.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I'm surprisingly torn about this.

Rios, in his age 24 season, had an OPS+ of 84.  Franklin, in his age 24 season (relatively SSS), had an OPS+ of 103.  It was Rios' second full season and Franklin's first real extended look.

I know it's cherry picking, since Rios posted an OPS+ of 120 and 122 the next two seasons, but is it unreasonable to assume Frankie improves a bit next year?

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I would prefer Sexy Lexi to J-Bay, even if we have to give up a little more.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Well he would certainly be better than Bay. I seem to recall Rios being a slightly above average fielder. Is that incorrect? Gutz might be a bit much to part with but a 26yr old who has only gotten better with every year is hard to pass.
I swear, next year is it.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Rios could play CF for a lot of teams. He's solid defensively. Certainly better than average.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
It is insane to think anyone would say no to this.  Everyone hopes Gutz can be Alex Rios.  Alex Rios is Alex Rios.

by nickjs21 on Dec 4, 2007 1:20 PM EST   0 recs

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
What's that supposed to tell me? He isn't a big time hitter. The OPS difference isn't near big enough for me to give up on holding out for the bigger upside.

by Joe on Dec 4, 2007 1:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
What bigger upside?  Honestly, what's the most HRs you think Gutierrez is going to hit?  The most optimistic projections I've heard on this blog involve something close to 30.  Rios hit 24 last year, while stealing 17 bases.  He's 26 going on 27.  You wouldn't jump at the opportunity to trade him for the potential for 6 more home runs?

Emphasis on potential.  Gutierrez can do it.  Alex Rios is doing it.  This is very important.

There's no way Toronto ever does this deal, which should be all most of us need to know about whether Gutz is "too much" to give up.

by nickjs21 on Dec 4, 2007 2:11 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
It's not though. Gutierrez is also the better defender.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Granted.  This isn't a deal-breaker for me.

by nickjs21 on Dec 4, 2007 2:17 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I'm not even sure of that. Rios is no slouch out there and is the far superior hitter. Everyone except Toronto would jump on this trade in a heartbeat. I fear you vastly overvalue Gutierrez.
I swear, next year is it.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I have to agree with this. Watching Rios all of the past couple seasons up here, the guy is an animal. And considering that he is the only offensive asset that Jays fans can intelligently boast about, I cannot imagine how they can realistically trade him without pissing off their entire fanbase.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
I like Rios a lot, wrote a whole big long thing about trading for him a year ago.  But I'm not sure what we're drooling over here.  The .350 OBP?  The .500 slugging from a right fielder?  The good-but-not-Gootz defense?

Maybe someone can show me where the extreme breakout is about to come from this guy, I don't see that forcefully indicated in his numbers.  Regardless, he's going to cost some $15 million more than Gootz over the next three seasons, and I don't see that he's that much better.

Main difference between them would seem to be that there is some risk that Gootz' hitting will backslide to the point where he can't stay in the lineup, and there is virtually no risk of that with Rios.

Can't we sell anybody on that handsome Ben Francisco fella?

by Jay on Dec 4, 2007 5:33 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
This is exactly what I was saying. The difference isn't that huge between the two and Rios is nowhere near an elite hitter.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Interesting to read how highly everyone in this diary views Guts.  Every other site and media outlet  I've looked at says that the Jays should expect (and get) more.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
They should. I'm not nearly as high on Gutz as other people here are.

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
There is a rumor that the Giants are thinking about trading Lincecum for Rios. If that is the case then we have no shot at getting Rios.

Maybe they will re-think it when they realize that people are not getting fair value for their stud players in the trade market based on the Santana trade talks and what Detroit just pulled off for Cabrera

General Question:

Is there some rule that says we can't stick a RF in LF?

Let's send D-Delli and Lee for Rios, and play Rios in LF.

Sorry, let me expand on that:  If you had Alex Rios, would you trade him away for David Dellucci and Cliff Lee after the 2007 seasons they had?

Re: Alex Rios Rumors?
Not nearly enough. It's a dream scenario for me as a Tribe fan.

I'd love to have Sexi Lexi, in a package that does not include Gutz.
