The Larry Doby Story tonight on Showtime

Anyone know this was even in Production?  This morning was the first I'd even heard of this documentary.  The full title is "Bud Greenspan's Pride Against Prejudice: The Larry Doby Story" and it premiers tonight, Febuary 1, at 9:30 on Showtime.  Just wanted to give everyone else a head's up on this.

UPDATE:  Two links on this: one on the Showtime web site, and the other on MLB.com. [Jay]

Re: The Larry Doby Story tonight on Showtime
Interesting... I read the book called Pride Against Prejudice, which was a little dry, but definitely gave me a great appreciation of what a trailblazer Doby was.

He never got the credit he deserved for being #2 (as both player and -- I believe -- manager), but was a phenomenal athlete and had a huge impact on the game of baseball.

Who on earth is Bud Greenspan?

I don't get SHO, but I want to see the film!

Re: The Larry Doby Story tonight on Showtime
Bud Greenspan is a filmmaker who is probably best known for his films about the Olympics.

Nice work, Jay.

The MLB article is very good, but someone needs to tell them that he managed, too.

Did anyone tune in?  For once I found a use for showtime other than to watch Weeds.  It was pretty good.  I found it amazing how much i didn't know about doby's career.  i wouldn't have minded seeing more game footage while his family or his contemporaries were talking in the background as opposed to showing them talk.  i loved some of those old uniforms and caps.  How good was that 54 team?  I'd love to see a documentary on the indians from that era.

I enjoyed it as an Indians fan, but I doubt it would make for compelling viewing outside of that.  Some great game footage and recent interviews with Feller, Rosen and Mudcat Grant.  Missed the first half-hour, so maybe there was some more interesting stuff in there.

Re: The Larry Doby Story tonight on Showtime
you didn't miss much in the first half hour.

was it me, or does Rosen look amazing for his age?  sign him up.  i'm sure he could find a spot on the team in a platoon role at least...

Re: The Larry Doby Story tonight on Showtime
Yeah, and I couldn't detect even a trace of bitterness in him, as he talked about Doby finally getting the HOF status he deserved.  Rosen certainly  was having a HOF career through age 30, before back injuries basically shut him down for good.  I know I've mentioned this before, but Bill James has said that at his peak, Al Rosen was as good or better as any 3B who ever played, including Schmidt.

Re: The Larry Doby Story tonight on Showtime
he's one of the reasons i'd love to learn more about the team in this era.  i don't think many people, if they're anything like me, know how good they really were.

i should probably know this, but is rosen's indians number retired?
