Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details

After reading through the last thread, I'll try to organize things a bit.  There will be two leagues, a H2H weekly league and a daily Roto league - both AL only at this point.  Either one can be changed before the season.  I tried to break up the two leagues based upon stated preference, but if I've messed up anywhere please let me know.  Or if you'd like, just try and negotiate changes here.  A number of people have said that they don't care in which league they play.  Once that's all straighted out I'll post the league ID#'s and passwords.  I'll make it an autodraft and and give people time to make their prerankings.

Thommy, you said that you'd be willing to help with one of the leagues, and I could use that with the Roto.  I don't know that I have time to completely manage a daily league.  Email me so we can work out the details.  My email is my name here with 33 added on the end at yahoo.com.

Turns out I don't need Yahoo ID's, so don't worry about those. There's also still a bit of room left if anyone wants to join.  The lists:

H2H:

  • mjmarble
  • sorrento
  • fwembt
  • jakesinger777
  • Nat
  • corsairs
  • sbricker
  • Jackdaw
  • Rayman
  • dctribefan
  • Jeff
  • curly1229
  • Roto:
  • mjmarble
  • Brandini
  • AlvaroEspinoza
  • Rochester
  • Jackdaw
  • mkwng
  • woodsmeister
  • rustypants
  • Thommy
  • sbricker
  • thetravishalffull???
  • [editor's note, by mjmarble] We'll be having a Live Draft for both leagues. Those who can't make it can just prerank their lists. I'll make said changes when we have people sign up for the two leagues.

Not to sound picky, but a couple of thoughts.
First, on the draft, you may as well make it a live draft.  That way, those who can make it can have a live draft, and those who cannot will have their prerankings and it will, in effect, be an autodraft for them.

Second, for the H2H league - I was just wondering, why did we decide to do it weekly instead of daily?  I don't really mind but I feel that daily leagues give people more freedom - and to keep the pitcher-streamers out (if that is our goal), we can put a cap on the allowed amount of transactions.  This is the same idea as the draft suggestion - those who want to do it daily can do it daily and those who do not don't have to.

    What do ya'll think?

Duly noted on the Live Draft.  I'll make a change to the league when we have everyone sign up.

As for the weekly H2H - I did it because, whilst I also enjoy the daily league more, I honestly don't know if I personally have time to do a daily.  It requires more of a commitment.  If over 50% of the H2H crowd says they'd prefer it, I'll go ahead and make those changes too...

I'd prefer weekly, but I don't have a preference for H2H versus Roto. If they H2H league were to be daily, you could move me over into the Roto league.

Err, you know, now that I think about it, it seems as though there are many interested in a daily league. I think I'd be up for trying it!

Didn't see the earlier post, but I'd like to play if there's still slots left.  Prefer Roto, but whatever.

I also second the live draft suggest.

brad also expressed interest to me in joining the Roto league.  thetravishalffull, are you interested.  I added you to the list, but wasn't sure your intention.

    Autodraft?
I don't see why we can't atleast TRY to make it a live draft, either way...I'm in!

I also may be able to be the commissioner of the Roto league if need be.

i like live drafts too, but it can be tough to get a time that works for people.  i've found sunday mornings to work pretty good.  i also like daily transactions, but am fine with weekly too. looking forward to both leagues!

Daily transactions are a must...Weekly gives people an excuse to not be active.

Honestly I would prefer a daily league, I wasn't too hot when I had a weekly league.

If you could change me, that would be great, but if not, that is ok.

Thanks for doing the setup. I've already devised a brilliantly complex draft strategy that revolves around the early acquisition of Esteban German.

    Definitely appreciate the work.

I'll just put my 2 cents in about daily vs. weekly.  I played in a weekly H2H last year and there were a couple annoying things.

First of all, especially with the H2H, if one of your guys gets hurt on Monday or early in the week, it can really screw you over.  Whereas with the daily lineup, you can make the change and put in a back-up.

The other thing is that if someone wants to make changes, but misses the weekly deadline, they are kinda screwed.  Ours was set up so that the weekly deadline was on Monday (thinking that you'd have the weekend and then all day Monday to set your lineup for the next week), but your lineup had to be set Monday at 12 am, so if you didn't change it by Sunday night, you were screwed. This was pretty annoying.

I guess my thinking is that the daily lineup is actually easier, because you can change it when you think about it, it's less frustrating if someone gets hurt, and in all reality, you don't change your lineups all that much.  I also agree with the point above that people tend to stay more active with a daily league.

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
Yes, you can make changes more readily when injuries occur and you don't have to worry about the weekly deadlines.  But I have played in daily leagues for many years now and I have seen that those who monitor their league and switch out players who have off days do much better.  I've never seen anyone who doesn't managed things daily finish higher than 5th - and that was a rarity.

If you want to do well in a daily league you have to pay attention Monday through Thursday to set your offensive lineups based upon who has days off.  You also have to keep up with the pitchers every day.  If people are not willing to do that, they will not do very well in the league and will fall in the rankings and most likely stop paying attention and become less active.  That's great for those who have the time, patience, and desire - but for the overall league it's not.

I just don't think that doing the daily lineup will make things easier if people are not truly willing to put the time into it.  Like I said, normally I would prefer a daily league because it does allow for a more interactive and involved experience.  I still say that if over 50% of the league is in favor of doing the H2H league daily, we'll do it.  But for me - knowing my schedule this summer - I vote no.

Right now it's 2 votes yes.  If 5 more people say they want it, it's done.

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
One thing that really bothers me about weekly leagues, is that it actually HURTS the values of players on a week to week basis.  Say CC is facing the Royals and Yankees in a week, for a weekly league, you probably have a better option.  In a daily league, you could start CC against the Royals and find a replacement pitcher for his Yankees start.

Ok - we're up to 5 people with desire to make the H2H a daily league.  Sorry, miscounted earlier.  2 more is a majority.

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
I'd prefer daily myself. I think that a certain amount of people will stop paying attention regardless. Also, in h2h people will always have the weekly contest to pique their interest, whereas in roto by the end of the season there isn't as much room to make up ground.

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
I would prefer daily for the head-to-head league, for the reasons others have mentioned.

If we do that, though, there probably needs to be either a limit on the number of transactions or on the total innings pitched, to deter streaming (guys picking up a new free agent SP every day to dominate the pitching categories).

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
I prefer daily for the H2H.

I have been thinking about that streaming problem.  I have streamed before and it is fun and difficult, but it does not neccesarily produce the kind of results you may think.

If we're doing the traditional 5x5, then the pitching categories are: W, SV, K, ERA and WHIP.
If someone streams, the first thing is that, since we're talking about starters, there is no impact on saves.
You will probably win in the wins and strikeout categories, unless you get incredibly unlucky and/or you are just not very good.
BUT, even if you stream, you have the same likelihood of winning ERA and WHIP as you do if you do not stream.  In fact, if you do not stream you have a better chance at winning these categories (because you probably have better starters and the other guy will likely pick up one or two starters who get blown out).
In order to be successful at streaming, you have to be really good and you have to find the best matchups.  I don't think, however, that it necessarily gives you a substantial advantage.

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
I agree with the argument to allow streaming. I did it for the second half last year and it was very difficult. I did usually win the W's and K's but it was very hard in my league (12 teams) to find starters that wouldn't kill me in WHIP and ERA. It took a lot of work to maintain any sort of edge with the streaming.

Re: Fantasy Baseball 2007 - Details
I have a slight preference for daily as well.  I'm not a huge fan of streaming, but I accept that it's a fair-game tactic in a daily league and I think the added involvement is worth the trade-off.  The most important thing for a good fantasy league is a high level of competition; I think a daily league that forces players to keep up with their teams frequently helps encourage that competitiveness.

Just a heads up that you should check out my fantasy baseball mock draft software.  It is free and comes with 2007 player projections which are totally customizeable.  It keeps track of rosters, gives advice on who to pick, shows updated real-time standings, league configurations can be created and saved as can partially completed drafts.  Use it and draft against the computer for practice or use it during your live draft.

Something else to discuss might be additional scoring categories.  Might we want to include OBP and SLG for hitters, for example?  Fielding percentage might be another one.

If so we would probably want to add some more for pitchers to balance things out--maybe holds (so people might want a middle reliever), walks (although it is sort of included in WHIP already), or perhaps innings pitched.

    Just throwing out some ideers.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I just want a straight 5x5 rotisserie league.  Cap IP and Games Played to prevent gaming the system (I have learned this is called "streaming" thanks to this thread).

For lots of us this is a second league.  In my case, the more straightforward it is, the more likely I am to keep up with it.

I'm sorry for the delay.  I've been terribly sick this week.  Since everything seems to have sorted itself out here are the details for the two leagues.  Please sign up for the league assigned.

brad, RichYett, and Tribelifer - there are spots for you in the Roto league.  I'm going to shoot for Live Drafts for the last weekend in March to avoid any injury problems.  Right now we have 13 people in the Roto league, but I will most likely drop out leaving commish responsibilities to Thommy.  Not 100% sure on that yet.

Go to this link to sign up for whichever league.

    H2H:

    League ID: 60678
    Password: travis

    Roto:

    League ID: 60355

    Good luck everyone.

Thanks for setting everything up Mr. marble.  Having been a commissioner for leagues in the past, I can tell you that you have already done most of the work just by picking the league size, categories, and draft date; once the draft happens the league pretty much runs itself.

I guess I'm saying don't feel you have to drop out because you're expecting a massive ongoing burden of work over the year as commissioner....during the season it's pretty much the same as for any other owner.
