A contusion never sounded so good
That's what Sabathia's left forearm injury has been classified as.
Even if Sabathia does end up missing next Monday's start, right now there's no indication that he'd have to go on the DL. April is littered with off days, so only four starters are really necessary through most of the month.
The active roster now is at 28, as four additional players were cut today:
Optioned OF Shin-Soo Choo, OF Ben Francisco, LHP Juan Lara to Buffalo (AAA)
Reassigned IF Luis Rivas to Minor League camp
This means that Tom Mastny, Mike Rouse, and Ryan Garko have made the club. Mastny is taking the place of Matt Miller. Rouse made the club based mostly on his defensive ability, although his handedness does make a nice compliment to the starting infielders. And of course Garko is expected to be the team's semi-regular first baseman, and could gain starter status if his defense improves.
Paul Hoynes notes that the Indians had some interest in Armando Benitez and Jorge Julio, and still trawling the waters for another good reliever. Chad Cordero is probably available, but it will cost whoever acquires him "multiple high-end prospects," according to Ken Rosenthal. That probably means Cordero isn't going anywhere.
The Indians received both of their Rule 5 players back today. OF Ryan Goleski, returning from Oakland, was less than pleased to be returning to Cleveland:
Not exactly the best way to endear yourself to your old organization. It looks like he'll end up in Akron again, given the already crowded outfield in Buffalo. RHP Jim Ed Warden, who was selected by the Phillies, was returned as well; he might have to go to Akron also.

Re: A contusion never sounded so good
What is that supposed to mean? Seriously, I don't understand that statement at all.
Re: A contusion never sounded so good
"The win went to former Toronto pitcher Bubbie Buzachero. The loss, oddly enough, was charged to former Indians pitcher Lee Gronkiewicz."

Re: A contusion never sounded so good
But you do kind of lose me when it comes to Choo, who hit almost as well in Triple-A and the majors last season as Goleski did in Kinston and Akron -- and who is several months younger. Are we really supposed to prefer Goleski because he's more "prototypical," rather than actually better?
Fact is, we can go in circles all day about which of these guys is going to outhit the others. The fact is, outside of Choo and Crowe, given their ages and achievements to date, most if not all of these guys face long odds of developing into hitters worthy of a spot in a big-league lineup.
That being the case ... should we not favor the ones with superior defensive skills, like Gutierrez and even Snyder?
Re: A contusion never sounded so good
This line of thinking was inspired by the comments that Sizemore is set in center and thus speed is not so high a priority. I'm not predicting, but I hope Goleski is given the chance to show his stuff in the Cleveland system. Either way it seems that the Indians have a very strong set of outfielders in the minors.

Re: A contusion never sounded so good
His 27 HR translates to 20 HR using the MLE numbers, and we can expand that out to 24-25 given a full season. I don't see him getting much over 30, and that's assuming he can hit advanced pitching at all.
Re: A contusion never sounded so good
No matter where he is, he still has to perform well. He had a golden opportunity with the A's and their OF injuries, and just couldn't take advantage. I'm sure some of his frustration is directly related to his poor performance during ST:
"What Goleski did miss was a lot of two-strike pitches. Through Tuesday, he was batting .152 (7-for-46) with a team-high 17 strikeouts. And with fellow outfielder Bobby Kielty expected to be fully recovered from knee surgery by Opening Day, the A's have no room on the big-league roster for Goleski, whom the Indians were happy to take back." Re: A contusion never sounded so good
I have no great enthusiam for Goleski but there is an A's blog that says they were willing to trade Justin Sellers to get Goleski. The Tribe must know something about Goleski that isn't apparent to me because I would have taken that deal without thinking. I guess this explains why Brown was moved to 1B. What a crowd in Buffalo and Akron! :)

1B/OF Jordan Brown!
I believe indianinkslinger is referring to 1B/OF Jordan Brown, who, according to this MiLB.com article, will be the starting 1B at AA Akron - this is significant because Brown played in the Kinston OF in 2006, and it was presumed that either Michael Aubrey or Stephen Head would be playing 1B for Akron for most of 2007, but it sounds like Brown will have significant time there.
Perhaps the Indians were preparing for Goleski's return, which meant that they prepared Brown to take over at 1B at Akron, knowing that Crowe and Barton will already take up two OF spots, so Goleski could take the final OF spot.
I read that Aubrey had been optioned to the Bisons, so the Indians must have felt confident enough in Aubrey's ability to hit to advance him to AAA Buffalo, despite limited AA experience. As for Head, even though he made progress late last year in changing his swing and using the whole field more, there is a decent argument for returning him to Kinston, just to make sure he is ready for the jump to AA sometime in 2007.
Speaking of Head, I just read today on BA's Prospect Blog that Head has made great strides on shortening his swing - he was the only member of the Kinston Indians to turn back Joel Zumaya's 98 MPH fastball on Saturday, lining out to second base. You can read more about that here.
Re: 1B/OF Jordan Brown!
I know that you are better informed on many of the blogs but I have not heard anything about a Buffalo option for Aubrey. I thought he was headed to the DL. I know there is no real reason he should not go to Buffalo since 1B options are no real exciting but he hasn't even had 200 ABs in AA, has he? :)

He is headed to the DL, but he was optioned
Hello indianinkslinger,
According to MiLB.com, via Bisons.com, Aubrey was optioned to AAA Buffalo. You can see more about that here.
Like I mentioned above, I presume the Indians felt comfortable with Aubrey's hitting ability and what he showed in ST to promote him to AAA Buffalo, even though he only has had 266 career AA ABs (134 in '04, 106 in '05, 26 in '06.)
That's probably also part of the reason why Jordan Brown was moved to 1B - the Indians feel Brown is more ready for AA than Head is, and with Goleski's return from Oakland, combined with Crowe and Barton, Akron's OF is already full, so Brown fits in perfectly at 1B, and from what I read online (either at BA, Kinston.com, or Indians.com,) Brown seems happy to make the transition back to 1B because he felt he played pretty well over there and feels he can make more of an impact defensively than just making routine plays in the OF.
Re: He is headed to the DL, but he was optioned
I read that Aubrey would start the season at Akron
In this Indians.com article, Indians Director of Player Development Ross Atkins says that Aubrey "could be ready to start the season at AA Akron," so it seems that optioning Aubrey to AAA was just a roster move, as Jay suggested.
The only question is, will Aubrey just DH at first, then share 1B duties with Brown, or will Brown sort of rotate between 1B and the OF, even though the OF already seems to be full with Barton, Crowe, and Goleski?
