Carmona and Kruk

As I sit here and watch Baseball Tonight, I'm wondering if anyone else saw it last night when Kruk was yelling at Philips that it made no sense at all that the Tribe was sending down their "best pitcher right now".  He went even further to say that it would be hard as a player to take the field with lesser pitchers taking the mound.

Not surprisingly, Philips justified the move by saying you have to go with the guys that have a proven track record even if they aren't performing right now.  Not once did this former GM mention minor league options as the reason.  How did this guy have a job?

Re: Carmona and Kruk
They're both idiots. I don't think they understand how baseball works...they just like whoever is doing well this week.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
Agreed.  It was rather comical, and sad that the majority of the country thinks of these clowns as "experts".  More reason why I'm so glad this site exists

Correction, they just like who is doing well "Tonight", thus the name Baseball Tonight.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
I saw it, and I couldn't believe I was siding with Philips.  Do you think Ravetch just sits there and thinks "Idiots.  Idiots.  Idiots," over and over in his head?  To suggest keeping up Carmona at the expense of WESTBROOK--not Byrd, WESTBROOK because he was doing poor--regardless of the fact that these were 2 good starts by Fausto and Jake has been a good pitcher for years and is also 33 million dollars richer ... I can't go on.

It was amazing how ticked off Kruk got.  He was legitimately upset.

I honestly thought they were fabricating the entire debate - that's the only way I could rationalize their comments.

Yeah, when Steve Phillips is the voice of reason, you know you've wandered into the loony bin.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
I saw this also. My impression was that the word came down that maybe they should talk about the AL Central. OF course, they don't know much about the AL Central (or maybe anything), so they try to stir up this fake controversy. It was so laughably contrived.

Baseball Tonight is reporting the Hughes will be out 4-6 weeks for the Yanks.  I think we could offer them Carmona for Abreu at this point.

As a diehard Yankee hater who absolutely loves Philip Hughes, I'm torn. It's his second start, and he's throwing a no-hitter...and I'm still sort of happy he got hurt. Part of me wants to keep watching him pitch, but I guess I'd rather see the Yankees continue losing.

I hear you guys. BBTN is almost unwatchable anymore. The only person associated with ESPN who knows anything about baseball is Orel Hersheiser.

he and Peter Gammons.  Jayson Stark, Karl Ravech [sic] also come to mind.

Who would win in a baseball debate among guys named Steve:

Steve Phillips, or Steven A. Smith?

Re: Carmona and Kruk
Gammons also, of course - brilliant analyst. Stark is hit or miss with me. SOme of his articles get on my nerves.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
I'll be honest, my memories of Stark's writings and interviews are pretty distant.  Virtually all of my sports news comes to me through the LGT channel, or via office chatter.  Stark may be terrible for all I know.  I don't own a TV., so I've watched almost no TV over the last few years.  (for the record, I'm not in jail and I'm not anti-TV).  I'm a little shocked to hear that BBTN sucks, because the last I saw of it I liked the show a lot... but that was probably right around the last time the Tribe's last playoff game.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
that last sentence makes no sense, but I'm too tired to correct it.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
Stark is pretty good. He seems to have reasons for his opinions. I don't always agree with him but he consistently makes sense. Rob Neyer is never on BBTN but is a good writer. I agree that Hershiser is the best they currently have other then Gammons. Ravech probably falls after those two. Most times he is tethered to a sinking ship.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
My Baseball Tonight lineup:

Karl Ravetch hosts.  I swear this guy is very good and insightful, but he leads a roundtable of idiots.
Fellow anchors Buster Olney, Tim Kurkjian, and Brian Kinney.  Although he's never been on BBTN, Kinney is a huge sabermetric guy and I think he'd lend some good banter.
Correspondents Peter Gammons, Rob Neyer, and Orel Hershiser (ONLY let Orel talk about pitching mechanics, breaking down video or something: he's a horrible conversationalist).

At the very least, it's a very pro-Indians roundtable.

The only guest athletes allowed on would be Vernon Wells and Aaron Boone.  They are the only two major leaguers who coud talk without tripping over their tongues.

Also, at the end of the night, they should add another segment with Web Gems, Slam of the Night (or whatever), and That's Nasty:  Harold's Hugs.  Reynolds comes on and gives out a Hug to whomever he think had the best playing performance of the night.  This hug would be mildly inappropriate and uncomfortable at best.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
And Phillips gets to sit on the set, but isn't allow to say anything.  Everytime he starts to speak, Ravech gets to tell him to "Shut Up, you were a lousy GM, what makes you think you know dick about baseball?"  Which is of course a rhetorical question, so everyone else just moves on.  All he gets to do is hold ribs while Kruk stuffs his face off camera.

Re: Carmona and Kruk
Well ... let me be clear about this, it's really an interface problem, just like the Subject line.  Our forums have a very simple graphical presentation of plain text -- there are no shaded or colored areas, no graphics, nothing.  As a result, repetitive subject headers and sigs blend in visually with the content -- as opposed to blending in with the page design, which is what repeating content should do.

That is, they clutter up the (original) content, forcing readers (including us) to work harder to digest the actual content (the new comments).  Under the present design, it's hard to screen out items that ought to just blend in.  That also means that if someone puts up a sig that some folks would find irritating, the experience is much closer (from the reader's point of view) to trolling than it otherwise would be.

On the other hand, sigs (like avatars and the user ID's themselves) are a good way for users to express a little something about themselves, which helps everyone "recognize" others in the group.  Lacking avatars, our ID's and sigs are our "faces" here.
