Internal "Trade"?

A TV commercial shows two Coke employees trying to sue another department in their own company. Silly, but funny.

The commercial caused me to think about an internal "trade" that would not literally happen, but might be fun to speculate about.

Would you "trade" David Dellucci, Trot Nixon, and Jason Michaels for Ben Francisco, Shin-soo Choo and Franky Gutz?

My case for keeping the current three is that they are experienced major league hitters (albeit somewhat mediocore careers)who may be more helpful in a race to the playoffs than less proven talent.

My case for making the "trade" is the addition of speed and more defensive coverage in the OF. Plus, the hitting could be better with the new guys (it's not like the current three have been making major contributions to the latest victories).

So, would you make such a trade now? Secondly, would you make such a "trade" in August, if we are out of contention?

Re: Internal "Trade"?
Trot Nixon, when healthy and not playing with an injury, as he has done in the past, probably still out hits any of those three in a platoon use against righties. I can take or leave Micheals....And Dellucci has been terrible, but I really really doubt he remains this bad the rest of season.....but if he doesn't recover by midseason then you look at what we have internally as well as what is available in the trade market.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
I agree, Nixon's .285/.366/.390 is the best of the three, but still not good for RF on a playoff team. Plus, he is so sloooooooooooow.

You guys are talking about dumping the biggest number of grit contributors on the team.  I refuse to be a part of this discussion any further.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
JB: I did not intend to imply that we are going to fall out of contention. But a team needs to plan ahead for one of two possible August scenarios:

  1. In contention: keep veterans and trade prospects for more veterans to plug holes.

  2. Out of contention: trade veterans (and their salaries) for prospects & bring up prospects for major league experience.

OK, we need to draw a line in the sand. If we can't beat KC tonight, we are offically out of contention!

Re: Internal "Trade"?
why are we going to fall out of contention?

Well, I think right now we are beating the teams that we are suppose to beat. Can we beat the good teams? that has yet to be seen. The yankees, despite all their troubles this year, are a good team, and they swept us. Id like to see how the tribe plays against detroit and boston. I consider those games a good early test.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
I think Minnesota qualifies as a "good" team and we have done damn well against them.

by Sorrento on May 23, 2007 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Besides the Twins (5-0,) we split with the Angels,
and even though the Blue Jays aren't that good now, they were considered pretty good when they started the season, and we swept them.  The Indians are also 4-2 against the White Sox as well, and the White Sox are a solid to good team in their own right.  The Indians are 9-3 against the AL Central (all of those wins coming against the Twins and White Sox, so they're 9-2 against them.)

Essentially, it's too small of a sample size to really say too much, positively or negatively.  No offense, but Steve Phillips is making a similar argument against the Indians based on that one series, and let's face it - it was ONE series; if you play that series again, I doubt the Yankees sweep us, so relying too much on that one series to tell how good the Indians really are is not a good way of determining how good the Indians really are.

And, just because a team is considered "weak," you still have to go out and beat them - there are no automatic wins in this league or "paper wins."  After all, look at the Twins and the D'Rays - Santana lost to those guys, and I don't think anyone would have fathomed that, especially at the Metrodome where Santana hadn't lost in over a year there.  So while one might expect a good team to beat a "weak" team, you still have to go do it, and that's easier said than done.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Internal "Trade"?
I don't think being in contention excludes us from making roster moves to improve our weaknesses.

I'd like to keep it as is until at least mid-season, but if Delluci doesn't come around then you make a move regardless of whether or not we are contention right?

Re: Internal "Trade"?
First, proven hitting.  Among the rookies, only Choo has shown any sign of being able to hit major league pitching well and consistently; only Choo has made any case for himself as having a bat that can play in a corner or command a startingn job.

Entering the season the three rookies had hit a total of 168 HR in the minors, and their 2006 MLE's were 693, 707 and 799.  The three vets had hit 249 HR in the majors, with career OPS of 778, 789 and 841.

Dellucci's poor start is a surprise, but it would be no surprise coming from Francisco.  We all tend to judge players relative to our expectations of them.  But when you're comparing two players, it has to be apples to apples.

Second, splits.  The three vets give us two lefties and a righty, a good complement to everyday Grady and swingman Blake.  The three rookies would give us two righties and a lefty, so we'd be exposing an extra righty batter to every righty starter, while yet another righty (Garko or Marte or Blake) would be sitting on the bench.  There is a reason the roster is constructed the way it is.

Third, depth.  You can't have the three rookies in the majors without giving up the three vets permanently.  On the other hand, you can keep the three vets in the majors and the three rookies in the minors, calling up the specific one you need most as the need arises.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
Agreed, the three vets have proven they have been able to hit in the majors. But,at some point in every player's career, his past statistics lose meaning; that is, he's past his prime.

On the other hand, the rooks may very well be on their way up. And that's the way it looks based on what Francisco and Gutz are doing at Buffalo in 2007.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
You haven't seen Choo's AAA numbers:

96 AB, .208/.304/.271, 14 SO, 12 BB

Pretty bizarre line, it's like he's trying to reinvent his plate approach.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
I wonder if Choo isn't suffering from a rare disease called Garkoitis. It's named after an obscure player who was disappointly sent down to the minors and hit only .247, but happily when he returned to the majors in the same year, he rebounded to hit .292. Maybe Choo can recover the same way.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
So every player who struggles when sent down to the minors is letting his disappointment affect his play, and he'll be just fine when he's called up? He better get over his disappointment, because Francisco and Gutierrez are clearly out-hitting him.

Re: Internal "Trade"?
Yeah, I hate this argument.  If that's the type of player he is, is he going to tank the team is losing?  If he has to platoon?  If the manager says something negative about him?  What if, god forbid, he gets booed at some point?
