Mujica sent down

Indians made the move bringing Mike Koplove uo from Triple A, and optioning Mujica downn again...i really dont get this move, i thought Mujica did a nice job...
" Purchased the contract of RHP Mike Koplove from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned RHP Ed Mujica to Buffalo."
"Koplove owns a career Major League record of 15-7 with 2 saves and a 3.76 ERA in 217 relief outings with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2001-06 (248.2IP, 225H, 104ER, 101BB, 171K). Koplove, a key member of the Arizona bullpen in 2002 (6-1, 3.36ERA, 55G) & 2003 (3-0, 2.15ERA, 31G), is 3rd in Arizona franchise history in relief appearances. He last pitched in the big leagues in 2006 for Arizona (0-0, 3.00ERA, 2G). He will wear #44."

Re: Mujica sent down
I don't know much about Koplove (it seems like he has decent ML numbers - why is he in AAA?), but my guess is that the FO wants Wedge to have another bullpen option to use in higher leverage situations (since Hernandez, and Kbrera cannot be used in high leverage situations at the moment).

I'll let those more familiar with Koplove vs. Mujica attempt to divine the finer points of the FO's likely rationale.

Re: Mujica sent down
According to he team Web site Koplove "had an upcoming out clause in his contract if he was not promoted to the Majors, and his performance and that contract status inspired the Indians to give him a shot in their 'pen."

Re: Mujica sent down
Thanks for the tip...but I still don't get this move as he hasn't been good for 3 years.

Re: Mujica sent down
We said "meh." M-E-H. Meh.

I'd say that 7th bullpen spot is his to lose, except for that he's got it at Eddie Moo's expense. And really, I think what Mujica needs most is some quality time with major league hitters. I hope this leash is choke-chain short.

Re: Mujica sent down
I don't see the harm in this move really. Mujica had been in 2 games since May 7? Obviously he needs more work and will get it in Buffalo. And if Koplove looked good in AA, and the management wants to take a shot, so be it. For all we know, he supplants Oldberto, or at worst, we cut him and bring Mujica back up.

meant AAA for Koplove.

Re: Mujica sent down
The harm is that Mujica is a better pitcher right now, and I'd rather have the better pitcher in there for even those two times.

Re: Mujica sent down
Yeah, it's better to have Mike Koplove sitting in the bullpen waiting for work than Mujica, who will actually be an important member of the bullpen in the coming years.

Re: Mujica sent down
I wanna add that Matt Miller is off of the DL and in AAA now....could be a short term stint for Koplove,,,,maybe just to see what they got in him before his out-clause pushes the issue.

Re: Mujica sent down
Hadn't noticed at the time.  Miller was not even sent on rehab assignment, they just optioned him to Buffalo on May 9.  Only explanation I can think of is that they like their options enough to know that they aren't going to rush Miller back to the majors within the bounds of a 30-day rehab assignment.  By optioning him immediately, they save a little money, since he's on a split contract.

Re: Mujica sent down
IF Koplove performs well (I have no idea what the odds on that are, but being cut loose by the Marlins must mean something), and M. Miller is soon ready to go, does that put Oldberto on the hot seat?

I'd have to imagine that Kbrera's recent implosion is not enough for him to lose his roster spot, and Mastny has pitched well enough to stay on.

Right now, Wedge seems only to be comfortable going to Raffy, Mastny, and Fultz in those crucial 6th - 8th innings, and I'm sure he would very much appreciate having a couple of additional reliable arms to throw out there. . . .

Everyone who thought Fultz would now be listed as someone to count on in those "crucial 6th - 8th innings" when the team left spring training please raise your hand...

Re: Mujica sent down
I certainly cannot raise my hand.  The bullpen analysis, like most things however, is indeed relative . . . .

I think my statement above points more so to the fact that we have two guys (Kbrera and Oldberto) that we cannot use with confidence in high leverage situations, which I find to be a significant source of concern.

Re: Mujica sent down
I decided he was a bad pitcher and I refuse to look at stats which prove otherwise as a matter of principle. His last name is "Fultz." I think that's Yiddish for "Unreliable Relief Pitcher," actual results be damned.

Re: Mujica sent down
Actually, fleerdon, you're not far off. "Foltzon" in Yiddish means "to fold."

Re: Mujica sent down
Which for some reason makes me imagine a rabbi playing 5-card stud.

That's awesome. I love how every word in that language sounds like what it means. In any event, Fultz has been foltzon over quite a bit recently. I'm not wrong yet.

Re: Mujica sent down
Went to the online Yiddish dictionary. Closest I could find for Fultz is "futz", which means: "to fiddle around, putter around." I think we can equate "futsing" around to "Fultzing around."

No need to damn any actual results, unless Fultz is a gentile.
