Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Game Thread: May 28, 2007

Cleveland at Boston, 7:05 PM (STO)
Memorial Day

Starting Pitchers:

Boston: Curt Schilling (3.94 ERA, 30 PRC)
Cleveland: Sleepy Kitten (5.93 ERA, 7 PRC)

The Indians had favorable matchups for each game of the Detroit series; this series, not so much. Josh Beckett will be coming off the DL tomorrow, and Dice-K will pitch on Wednesday.

The Indians optioned Andy Marte to Buffalo today, calling up Rafael Perez in his place. My first impression: makes sense short-term, but this might bite the Indians come next season. More after the game.

We just got our first taste of KC last week.  But the Red Sox still haven't played the Devil Rays yet.  That's like 20% of their remaining schedule.

Trot's high school career, from Wikipedia. Weird-I always see Trot's hometown as Durham. Durham is not Wilmingotn.

Nixon attended New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, and as a senior, he was named the State Player of the Year in both football and baseball. In football, as a senior, he broke school passing records held by former National Football League quarterbacks Sonny Jurgensen and Roman Gabriel. In baseball, as a senior, he was named Baseball America Magazine's High School Player of the Year, named the State Player of the Year, and helped lead his team to the State 4A title, and he finished his impressive senior season with a .512 batting average, 12 home runs and a state-record 56 RBIs, and pitched 40 innings with a 12 win-0 loss record and a 0.40 ERA record.

Regardless, pretty incredible.

I think there's a solid chance it's just a trade everyone forgets. Obviously, he's not really what Boston needed or wanted. Marte still is completely up in the air. I hope it becomes a trade that we all love (i.e. Marte becomes an all-star) and it has plenty of time to do that.

Still, as of now, it's the kind of trade nobody has clearly won. We have more time to win it.

I guess my point, which I've meandered to, is that I can't imagine any Indians fans sitting around in a bar in 10 years kvetching about how absolutely horrible this trade was. It's either going to be forgettable or a win.

If it had to be someone, might as well be Manny.

Well, Hafner's calling card is pitch recognition, right? It appears he just can't see the bal right now which is better than if he was struggling with something specific, at least in my opinion. It's not that he's got a sudden weakness, it's that his head's just not right. Seems easier to fix.

Re: Game Thread: May 28, 2007
Remember how Fenway Park is quirky?  Well, it turns out that the quirkiness is so powerful, it allows 265 pound first basemen to "sprint" around the bases and score EASILY!  It bounced off the triangle in centerfield got past Grady and Trotter threw it in from leftcenter.

by NickFantana on May 28, 2007 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

You know it's Boston's night when Youkilis
can get an inside-the-park HR, on what looked like to be a wind-aided ball - I don't think Youkilis hit it THAT well, as it looked like he got underneath it just a bit, and that's the deepest part of the ballpark.

Doesn't mean the Indians can't win tonight (a testament to them still being in this game,) but when things like that happen, the slight advantage would seem to shift toward Boston's favor.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Where was Dellucci?!
Hello everyone,

Not to pick on Dellucci, as he's looking better at the plate lately, but that ball bounced so far off the triangle that you would have thought Dellucci wouldn't have been too far away from it.  If Dellucci had hustled toward left-center, MAYBE Youkilis would have only had a triple and/or been thrown out at home plate (at least there would have been a play at the plate.)

Of course, someone might question too why Hernandez was still pitching, but for the most part, he hasn't looked too bad tonight.  If he could become serviceable again, that can only help us long-term.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: Game Thread: May 28, 2007
Rule 6.05(b) makes a batter out if:
b) A third strike is legally caught by the catcher;

Rule 6.05(j) covers in part the dropped third strike:
j) After a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base;

Rule 6.05(f) reads logically in context that a third strike swing that then hits the batter is an out.

Rule 5.09(a) makes it a dead ball when a batter is hit.
(a) A pitched ball touches a batter, or his clothing, while in his legal batting position; runners, if forced, advance;

It's not quite appropriate obviously, but it's the closest thing that applies.
I haven't found any rule discussing whether the hands count as part of the bat.
I think the umpires applied the rules correctly to their "interpretation" of the play.

The circumstances made it more ridiculous.

Re: Game Thread: May 28, 2007
As far as I know, the ball is dead any time any batter or runner is hit by it.  Regardless of whether the batter is safe or out, I don't see how you could let a team's runners advance just because the ball caromed off some body part the batter.  That would be an absurd rule.

Here is the pitch by pitch record of Blake advancing on the ball that hit Hafner. It was important, as it essentially gave the tribe their first run (it put Casey in scoring position, and Vic singled him home). Again no one complained, but it sure looks like a screw up by the ump.

Grady Sizemore    Strike (looking), G Sizemore flied out to center    0    0
Casey Blake    Strike (looking), Ball, Ball, Strike (foul), Foul, Ball, Ball, C Blake walked    0    0
Travis Hafner    Strike (looking), Ball, Strike (looking), Foul, Strike (swinging), T Hafner struck out swinging, C Blake to second on wild pitch by E Santana    0    0
Victor Martinez    Ball, Strike (looking), Ball, V Martinez singled to center, C Blake scored    1    0
Trot Nixon    Ball, T Nixon flied out to center    1    0

Prior to today's games, the Yankees 3rd order Pythagorus wins would have them in second place. Based on their RS and RA totals one might expect them to bounce back in a big way. But as you point out, they have a ton of teams to climb over. Plus, while there is still a lot of season left, the clock is running. They must already be giving some serious thought to pulling the plug.

That may be, but even if we take third-order standings at face value, that they should be a .573 team, the fact is, those 6.5 wins of under-performance are on the books at this point.  If they go .573 ball the rest of the way, they end up with 86 wins.

I think they need 95 wins to make the postseason, and that would take a .655 performance -- they'd have to play like a 106-win team.  And frankly, Pythagoras just doesn't have that kind of sock.

Thoughts on 2 issues!
Hello everyone,

Question:  It looked to me like Blake didn't swing the bat around until AFTER it hit him; as he tried to get out of the way, the bat went through the zone.  Therefore, shouldn't Blake have been on 1st, or at worst, got another pitch if the ball hit his bat?  Seems like a bad call to me, or at the very least, a very disputed call.

The other issue I have is, will Hafner ever break out of this?  He doesn't look at all like the same hitter.  I know he has a long track record of succeeding, but teams will probably continue to pitch him like they are until he makes an adjustment and not chase so many bad pitches like he did in his last AB and foul off so many pitches he usually drives.  The question is, what if he doesn't?  What if he's like this all year, or even into next year?  I doubt teams will go back to the way they used to pitch him.

Question:  Would it be better to resign Hafner long-term or CC long-term if you could only sign one of them, and why?  For the record, I always thought Sabathia was #1, followed by Pronk, then Westbrook, but we've already signed Westbrook, so at most, we'll probably only be able to retain one of Pronk or CC.  The question is, which one would be easier to replace?  I keep thinking that CC's production will be harder to replace than Hafner's - opponents can keep walking/avoiding Hafner, and if he tries too hard like he's doing now, he'll keep getting himself out by either chasing garbage or fouling off pitches he'd normally crush.

On the other hand, opponents can't avoid CC (barring injury, of course, but that would go for Hafner as well,) and even though CC only pitches once every 5 days, it seems to me you can replace a powerful hitter/slugger easier than you can an ace pitcher - 3 solid hitters in a lineup can make up for the lack of a slugger than 3 average pitchers can make for the lack of an ace (see mid-90s Indians.)

Just something to consider - the more I watch Hafner, the more I wonder if this slump will be broken soon or if this is something that Pronk will put up with all year, if not into 2008 as well.  He's never been in a slump for this long and looked this bad, and teams likely won't change their style of pitching as long as it's working - if Pronk can't make the adjustment, I'm not sure I see him being the consistent hitter he has been over the past several years.  I hope I'm wrong on that, but by now, he would have already gone into one of his hot streaks, regardless of what adjustments pitchers had made to him.

If he wasn't chasing so many bad pitches and mishitting the few pitches that are in the strike zone, I probably wouldn't be as concerned and wouldn't be asking this, but I'm starting to think this will be more of a season-long slump for Hafner, not a month-long slump.  I hope I'm wrong when I say that.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

by indiansfan on May 28, 2007 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

Re: Thoughts on 2 issues!
even if Pronk is his 2006 self all the time, Sabathia is more irreplaceable... irreplaceabler... whatever.

the difference-maker is that CC will cost a bajillion dollars to resign, whereas Pronk might only cost a quarter bajillion dollars.

by nctribefan on May 28, 2007 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I'd rather spend the bajillion for a guy
opponents can't avoid and gives great production, versus spending "just" a quarter bajillion on a guy they can avoid and gets all out of rhythm by them avoiding him and throwing him junk.

In essence, I agree with you - I think CC is the more valuable of the two, but I get the feeling the Indians will have a better chance of keeping Pronk than CC, and will likely make a "better" effort to resign him than CC.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Thoughts on 2 issues!
My subjective view of Pronk's struggles as is bleak as anyone else's.  I watched him hit a grand slam in person, and still said out loud, "He's still not right."

That said, there are reasons not to be quite so despondent.  We feel like this is a two-month slump, but it isn't -- not at all.  The slump is worse than you think, but it hasn't lasted that long.

  • .185/.340/.333 over 23 games, since arriving in Baltimore on May 4.
  • .381/.494/.651 over 25 games leading up to that point.
  • May is Pronk's worst month, per career splits.
  • Although not this severe, May was Pronk's worst month in 2005 and a close second in 2004.

As bad as he's looked doing it, it's not unprecedented for a Scary Monster to put up a 673 OPS for a month.  And it would be hard to think of someone who, based on the both the excellence and consistency of his past three years, would be a better bet to bounce back.

I don't know what the Indians' last contract offer was to him.  Emotionally, I'm pulling that offer off the table before I get sick and pass out.  But intellectually, I'm moving in for the kill, and I'm not changing the number.

Pronk needs everyone here to focus.  That's the problem.  We at LGT have game threads for Cavaliers' games.  We're talking about Wiffle Ball with Grady.

That's not what Pronk needs right now.  Pronk needs the collective to concentrate on the pitch low and away.  Pronk needs us to see the ball with him.  Pronk needs us to get on the exercise bike and peddle like hell right before his at bat.

Regarding the Yankees!
Hello everyone,

I would think if the Yankees don't get it going in full force by July 4th, I'm thinking they'd have to give serious consideration to pulling the plug.  Boston isn't likely to slow down any time soon, and with the other three AL East teams standing in the Yankees' path, not to mention other teams in the WC hunt, going .500 or slightly above in June is not likely going to cut it.  I'm thinking they're going to have play at least .600 ball or more in June to really have a realistic shot of reaching the postseason in 2007, and right now, that looks like a very tall order, even for them and their $200 million dollar payroll (or whatever high figure it is these days.)

Not to rub it in, but it's nice to see the D'Rays tied with them - it seems the D'Rays are finally moving up in the world.  :-)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Hello Jay,

Thanks for the analysis - I didn't see your post until you mentioned it.  I knew their hole was deep, but not THAT deep.  They're in more trouble than I originally thought.  :-)

89 wins likely won't be enough for the WC; I would think at least 90, and probably more like 92-93 wins would be the minimum for winning the WC this year at this point.  Who knows?  Maybe even 95 wins might be needed; 93 wasn't enough for us 2 years ago and it wasn't enough for Seattle back in 2002 or 2003 (not sure.)
