ChiSox fire sale?

According to speculation from the Chicago Sun Times the Sox are probably headed for a mid-season fire sale.  Basically the gist of the article is that the team will probably win more, but in the ultra competitive AL Central they don't stand a chance.  The time frame for this, according to the Sun Time, would start around the All Star break.  The article also covers the failure that is the Cubs, but the interesting part deals with the fact that the Sox are older, slower, more prone to injuries and continuing to get more expensive.  I'd toss in the fact they don't have enough pitching, but that's just my take.  Williams can't contend and rebuild at the same time (he should've asked Shapiro how that turned out).

If this speculation holds true, there's at least a bit less competition in the division to overcome.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
I'm not worried about them.  The team Pecota made a lot of good points.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
Pecota predicted the White Sox would give up the 2nd most runs in the AL this year. I dont see that happening.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
I think that's what they should do.  I think they decided they were going to try the "win right the hell now" approach a year ago, see if they couldn't luck into a repeat pennant at least.  But it didn't work, and the smart move, even after having done that, is not to try it for another couple of years.  Williams already did some youth-reloading in the offseason, and I would expect he's ready to do some more midseason and next offseason.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
The parallels to the tribe of 2002 are striking. Like you said they tried to luck into a pennant last year (like the tribe in 01). Then in the offseason, they made trades for the future, but sacrificed a chunk of the present, so much so, their chance of lucking into a pennant with an aging team in 2007 was greatly diminished. Now the white sox may be forced into a fire sale.

In my mind, you either try once more in 2007 with an aging team (what I would do, there is a chance you will get lucky), or you try to reload, and not in some mamby-pamby type style. Maybe Shapiro in the 01-02 offseason, and Williams in the 06-07 offseason  both decided to go the fire sale/rebuilding way. But the only way to sell it to your fans is by first crippling the team just enough in the offseason.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
I wonder if the White Sox faithful would be willing to accept another "White Flag Trade?"  Although you could argue that the WFT was good for the Sox in the medium term, the immediate fallout was a huge alienation of the fanbase, and it took some time to recover.

Should we look to add anyone from their team? Konerko?

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
Konerko just signed a pretty big contract and is destined to become a DH within the nxt few years. He'd be great for a stretch run if his contractract was expiring. Why not a Jim Thome homecoming-a last hurrah before he retires? even if they weren't competing would the ChiSox trade within their division?

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
The chances that the White Sox will trade anyone to Cleveland are pretty slim.

In the event that we would trade for Thome, who plays first base, Thome or Hafner?  They can't both DH.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
Put one at shortstop for all I care. Against RHP, that team would score more than Wilmar Valderrama.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
The thought of Hafner and Thome on the same team does things to me that are not appropriate to discuss, but I don't think it's feasible for a number of reason.

Bringing Thome back would be like inviting your girlfriend back into your home after she sleeps with your worst enemy.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
but what if she's still sooooooo hot?

it's more like: inviting your girlfriend back into your home after she sleeps with your worst enemy... even though you've already got a younger, hotter new girlfriend with a cute nickname.

Re: ChiSox fire sale?
I think they'll aim to unload Buehrle, Contreras, AJP, Thome, Iguchi (though he's having a bit of a down year), Posednik (if healthy and just to get rid of him) and maybe Dye.

Given that they'll probably try to trade guys in July, I can't even guess where our needs might look to be, but I think the WS won't have any problem trading players to the Indians or anyone else in the division if they think they can get the best value there.

Would that mean they'd ask more from us in
order for us to pull off a deal or not?

Re: Would that mean they'd ask more from us in
They'll look to get the same thing from any auction winner- the very best value.  If KW thought for an instant a single player traded to the Indians might somehow impact the division race significantly and for years to come, then I suppose there might be other considerations, but that's pretty unlikely.  Best value to the Sox should win.

Wishful thinking
Greg Couch knows as much about baseball as my sister. And the columnists have been right about Willams as often as The Cubs have won the World Series.

Why on earth would the Sox firesale now? The rotation and bullpen are fine and the collective team hasnt hit a lick. Yet they find themselves .500

If they were to fall out of it completely (which I don't see happening with good pitching and defense) they sure as hell ain't trading with the Tribe..

Re: Wishful thinking
Read it again.  He's not saying they should sell now, he's predicting they will be in that position in July.  Sox fans are free to disagree.

Re: Wishful thinking
I understood that dg. I was merely pointing out the utter uselessness of most of the columnists here for legit information regarding the ML teams. Couch in particular knows very little about baseball.
