Been gone awhile. I keep losing the Netflix free mailer, so the movies sit around..for weeks... after I watch them. Which doesn't explain why I don't review the movie I have, I know. Anyway...
Gotta get this out up front: I know I'm supposed to like this movie...but I don't. Didn't even finish it.
Here's the thing...there's not much actual baseball in it. There is, however, a long nightclub dance scene. Followed by a nightclub chanteuse doing her WHOLE NUMBER. And lots of nightclub small talk between Lou and his new found girlfriend. I know, I know...a baseball movie doesn't have to show players in uniform for the whole darn flick (I guess) but it should have SOME baseball in it.
Never mind all the almost weird scenes with Gehrig and his mother. We all love our mothers, but the movie really, really drives the point home that Gehrig is something of a mama's boy. I haven't a clue as to whether he was or not, but the movie sure belabors the issue.
Plus, I don't like Gary Cooper in this. He's kind of like a high school sophomore doing the annual play. Mugging...foot shuffling....I don't know, he just didn't seem good for the part.
The highlight of the movie is Babe Ruth...as in the actual Babe Ruth. And more than just a cameo role. And he's actually not bad. Could have given Cooper a point or two, I think.
I got the feeling some movie execs of the day sat down and figured a baseball movie would sell and Gary Cooper would sell so lets get somebody who hasn't a clue about the game to write a script. I was looking forward to a movie that gave me some idea of Gehrig and his approach to baseball. Seems like the movie addressed everything but.
I suppose I should finish the movie....naah, it's too boring.
