Indians Scouting Director John Mirabelli has said elsewhere that when he signed, Mills would be assigned to Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League.

Re: Mills Signed
Well that was quick.  Short-season leagues start next week.

Re: Mills Signed
Thanks for the link - I had seen this mentioned but couldn't conform it. Very good news! We'll get our first look at the 20 year old next Tuesday I think.

Re: Mills Signed
Okay, great.

Now everybody ... forget about this guy for a year and a half.  If he does anything, I'm sure we'll hear about it.

Re: Mills Signed
Wait, is he on the 40?? LOL

Re: Mills Signed
No, thank heavens.

Under the new rules, college draftees are exempt from the Rule 5 draft for four years after they sign.  So unless he's actually being added to the 25-man roster, you won't see Mills on the 40-man until November 2010.

If that's when he's added to the 40-man, the Indians will have options on him at least through the 2013 season.  So the Orioles are going to have to wait quite a long time for this budding superstar, yessirreebob.

Given that the new CBA takes yet another year off the timetable (as noted elsewhere), I think you'll see very, very few major-league deals for draftees from now on.

Re: Mills Signed
He's sitting with Underwood and Manning now, noting that he'll start in Lake County actually, not Mahoning Valley.

Re: Mills Signed
I assume that means Whitney will, finally, get promoted to Kinston

by APV on Jun 15, 2007 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Mills Signed
They will assign Whitney wherever it's convenient for the team.  He's only a month older than Head, and their numbers are essentially the same -- similar mediocre walk rates and good power, Whitney hitting for significantly higher average but at a lower level.

Maybe they can platoon in Kinston.

Re: Mills Signed
He mentioned doing a 10 day minicamp first - I think he'll actually go to MV first to get a crash course at 1B, and then go to LC after. That's my take.

by mcrose on Jun 15, 2007 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I believe he will start at MV, but move up
to LC about a week afterwards.

APV - I presume Whitney will move up to Kinston; there's not much more he can learn or do at LC, so it's now or never time for Whitney (for any chance at a ML career, not necessarily with the Indians, as I think the chances of that are pretty slim at this point.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Mills Signed
Well, I'll let my dad know he's got 10 days to catch MIlls.  My parents live about 15 minutes from Cafaro Field.

Over the years, we've seen CC, Vic, and Trevor Crowe play there.

Re: Mills Signed
From everything I've read, it's Mahoning Valley for about a week, then Lake County.  So when he goes to LC, I think I might make the 30-minute journey over to catch a game, see him in person, and file him away in the back of my head for a few years.
