Things to do around the Jake

I am coming into town this weekend and staying for the A's series.  I am a big A's fan and linked over from Athletics Nation.  We are staying right across the street from the Jake.  I was hoping you could suggest some places to eat or things to do in town.  We were planning on going to the Rock Hall and taking the Trolley tour.  Thanks alot for any help you can give.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
I recommend hopping on the Rapid and checking out Ohio City; the classic West Side Market is located there, as well as Great Lakes Brewing Company, home of some of the best beer in the world by my estimation.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
Thirded.  Since you're staying downtown, it's a great way to get away from the city, yet you're only  crossing one big bridge.  The market can get busy on Saturday, but a late afternoon trip capped off by dinner and drinks at the previously mentioned Great Lakes Brewing Company is a perfect, casual day.

The Tremont area is a bit of a yuppy neighborhood, but it has its spots.  The Treehouse is where all non-Ohio city folk go... I'd stay away.  I'd recommend either South Side or Lincoln Park Pub.

Little Italy, just off of University Circle, is also a nice little area.

However, since you'll be in downtown, I'd recommend Harry Buffalo or Flannery's.  Both are across from the arena (on the other side of Jacobs Field).

If you are at the Rock Hall, you might as well go next door to the Great Lakes Science Center.  Its a nice little way to spend the day, catch a show in the IMAX theatre and the touring Baseball Hall of Fame exhibit is there for the summer.  I don't know if you've been to Cooperstown or not, but its a nice little touring exhibit and worth the time, IMO.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
GLBC is good.  Before the game, stop at the Thirsty Parrot accross from the Bob Feller statue, or even better, walk through that alley and hang out at Panini's or the Clevelander's outdoor bars.  The Rock Hall is of course a must.  A lot of bars in Tremont are good for post-game festivities, like the South Side.  I've even spotted players there.  There's a good wine place, I think it's on East 4th street.  Name escapes me.  It's accross from Pickwick and Frolic.

... And I have only named one place that isn't primarily an alcohol den.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
If you are heading to Tremont, you can check out the house where they filmed the movie "A Christmas Story".

Go south of the Jake and climb the salt mountains.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
If your tastes run more towards the cultural, then University Circle contains several excellent museums and is also accessible via the Rapid, though you will have to do some walking.  Although the Art Museum is closed for repairs, the Natural History Museum, the Crawford Car and Aviation Museum/Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Cleveland Botanical Garden are all quite good.

Does Cleveland still have any of its Hulett Unloaders (the massive crane/bucket thingies that unloaded ore boats)?  I'd love to see one of those monsters if I'm ever in town.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
sadly no.  there were 4 left, and a few years ago they took them down.  i think 2 were taken apart rather than scrapped, with the intention of putting them back up on display somewhere.  but that hasnt happened yet

Re: Things to do around the Jake
A lot of the Latin mlb players get together at Lozado's (sp?) on W25th Street just north of the West Side Market after the games.  Good Caribean food.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
Thanks for your help.  Another question...is there a rapid transit way from the airport to The Jake.  I have been trying to figure out the map on the transit website.  It looks like I can go as far as Tower City and then I walk the rest of the way??  Is this correct?  Help please!

Re: Things to do around the Jake
You got it.  Take the Rapid - $2 last time I did it - to Tower City.  It's about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the to the Jake - less if you're in a hurry.  The Rapid will limit you in terms of getting around to the places mentioned above.  You can still walk or take a $5-7 cab ride to the R&R HoF.  It'll be a little tougher to get to the Ohio City/West Side Market area - I'd take a cab there and back.  Good luck and don't forget to report back to us on your trip!

Re: Things to do around the Jake
Rapid is $3.50 for an all-day pass, and you can get to Tower City, as Chuck mentioned, where it is a short walk to the jake from there. However, he's wrong about Ohio city. You can take the Rapid to Ohio City (one stop west of Tower City), and you come out right across the street from the West Side Market. I believe you can take the "lakefront line" to the R&R Hall, but I'm not sure. Definitely sure about Ohio City though, since I just did it last night to go to GLBC.

Me too... I just learned a little about Downtown since I lived in Little Italy for a semester.

Re: Things to do around the Jake
Walking to the Jake from Tower City isn't bad at all.  Past the food court in TC they have the Walkway, which is just a long corridor that takes you right out at the Q, next door to Jacobs Field.
