More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron

Phillips is making the argument that the commissioner's office should prohibit Bonds from playing on the road 'in the best interests of baseball'.  He's afraid of the image of baseball, of fans throwing syringes on the field (if he plays on the road), etc. ,etc.  OH MY GOD.

Even Kruk is foaming at the mouth.

My goodness, I've heard of taking a contradictory opinion to trigger discussion, but ?!?!?!?

Yea I couldn't believe what I was hearing.  He officially has no chance ever of being a GM again.  I know Bonds hitting it on the road would not be well received but he deserves that.

Regardless of the villany Bonds is guilty of, the man does NOT deserve to be assaulted or have things thrown at him that may cause physical harm.

But Philip's is a moron. There's no way they should sit him on the road, but I think MLB should really try to beef up security for those games and take a no tolerance stance with drunken morons.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Did any of you see the piece in a recent ESPN the magazine about Lance Armstrong's (apparently) clear and flaunting use of performance enhancers through the course of his career?  The double-standard applied to Bonds and Armstrong is unfortunate.  It might simply be explained by the profile of the sport (baseball is much more high profile than cycling in the US), but I'm afraid it might have more to do with a certain topic that Mr. Sheffield likes to cite.  I mean, Armstrong (like Bonds, no prince) has been lionized.  It can't all be because of cancer survivorship and good PR spin, can it?

And, with that, I will step off the soapbox.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Well you also have to consider the fact that Armstrong isn't a total dick.

And he dated Sheryl Crow.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Bonds is a world-class d-bag.  No doubt.  My opinion of Armstrong (though not as negative as that of E5) isn't that high, particularly after reading about the way he, essentially, pressured teammates to take EPO to stay on his team.  If you haven't had a chance to check out the article, it's an excerpt from a book by David Walsh, From Lance to Landis: Inside the Doping Controversy at the Tour de France.

I can't find an electronic link to the ESPN the Mag excerpt, but it's in the July 2nd edition (with Oden on the cover).

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Phillips is as smart as a bag of hammers - not exactly breaking news from those of us with cable.

Not sure if any of you caught the interview David Walsh did with NPR during his tour to launch the book.

To call him a lying hack would be kind.  He had zero, and I mean zero proof to any of his allegations and did his best Whitehouse press secretary impression - answering the question he wanted to answer rather than the question asked.  I find it appalling that a guy like this gets the kind of attention he does.  If your sole source for hating Armstrong is David Walsh, you'd better rethink your position.

Personally, I think he's a cocky, self-centered SOB but he's probably the greatest athelete of my generation and without a credible person coming forward to corroborate the allegations against him I can't find any reason to presume his guilt.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Good to get another opinion on Walsh.  I had/have no opinion of him (or the quality of his work), but found the article to be compelling.  It's hard to believe that Armstrong was the lone clean competitor in a sea of EPO users, when the effects of EPO have been so dramatic.  I know, I know, it's speculation, but that (sadly) is the era that we live.  Thanks for your report of the NPR interview.  Maybe I'll look it up.

Can't agree, however, with your statement that Armstrong is the greatest athlete of our generation.  How about Bo Jackson?

Grew up in Oberlin, live in Ravenna, near the UW.

And, I was kinda serious about Bo.  My vote for greatest athlete goes to an athletic freak (off the charts in size, speed, strength) over someone that dominates an individual sport, e.g. Lance, Tiger, or Federer.  Semantics.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Well, I suppose my criterion for Greatest Athlete of My Generation hinges on Lance winning the most difficult/prestigious event in a highly competitive sport seven times, two more than anyone in its 100+ year history.

I'd be much more open to discussions of Tiger being in the running before Bo, though I think your comment had an undeclared /sarc tag.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
I would agree, but a very nice white man named Mark McGwire seems to have taken it on the chin pretty good, and Barry Bonds is, even by a charitable standard, something of a prick.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Yes, I've somewhat arbitrarily polarized Bonds and Armstrong.  My bad.  It's been on my mind lately - particularly when there appears to be more evidence to crucify Armstrong than Bonds.  Puzzling.  I mean, personality aside, could you imagine a world where Bonds hosts the ESPYs?  And, do you remember how mercilessly (and antagonistically) Armstrong made fun of people like Jake Gyllenhaal at the award ceremony last year.

Ok, this time I really will step off the soap box and watch the dang game.

I don't think there is really solid evidence on Lance, certainly not to the extent that there is on Bonds.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Then you are quite possibly the most ignorant person around. While there is proof that Bonds is guilty there is none that Lance ever cheated. Saying that he didn't even have cancer is just incredibly dense. Given that he made an incredble recovery and has, since then, given hope and millions of dollars to hundreds of thousands of people, your blanket condemnation of him based on something you clearly know nothing about makes you a world class d-bag.

Book of Shadows was fairly convincing to me. I have not seen any sort of proof that Lance did. I can be convinced though. I was a bit more upset about the fake cancer thing.

You seem to be mistaking your opinion for fact.  While evidence can make a case seem obvious, proof is proof.  If Bonds had been proven guilty already, he wouldn't be playing.

I said it was "fairly convincing." Don't get too touchy. I am not trying to debate the Bonds thing. I think, think, that there is more convincing evidence against him. I have not seen that much on Lance. I could be wrong. I just got heated about the fake cancer thing.

Seems like the Lance evidence is starting to mount though. That testimony from his former nurse (who yes, is the disgruntled wife of a competitor, I know) won't help things.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Mario - you should know.  EPO is a common adjunct to highly cytotoxin chemotherapy.  I friend of mine who is an oncologists tells me that given the highly toxic regimen that Lance was on, it's quite possible that he was given the EPO to counteract his chemotherapy induced low RBC counts.

Also! I'm sure he was given corticostoroids as part of his germ-cell seminoma treatment.  So there you go - steroids and EPO.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Alright, that's enough.  Unless you have documentation that shows that Lance never had cancer, I would suggest that you shut the hell up.  Such a diagnosis is not something that is to be taken lightly.  The amount of time and energy and money that he has poured into fighting cancer is as clear an indicator that he's successfully in remission as you can point to that he's never had the disease.

Re: More proof that Steve Phillips is a moron
Actually, that's totally endearing as far as I'm concerned.  Perhaps you don't remember the alternative.

E5 has basically put it out there that he's got his opinions, and they're valid as stand-alone essays, regardless of facts.  Basically, he's not interested in arguing about them.  Which is a big improvement, if you think about it, over those who will insist on arguing about them and are willing to mis-read and distort the facts to fit their arguments.

He's comfortable just shooting from the hip, then retreating back to his barstool.  God bless him.

Man, gone a few days, and I miss all the fun.

"if" Lance was lying about his cancer, he'd have had to pay off a lot of doctors and nurses, etc. Am pretty sure that most doctors are unconcerned with promoting someone's image to go out and lie for them. Something about the Hippocratic oath or something like that.

Yeah, he just kept digging his grave deeper and deeper as Kruk and Ravitch looked on in complete disbelief.  It's like he lost a bet and had to take a ridiculous opinion on a subject.  Yet, he appeared sincere.  Isn't that a sign of insanity?

by macasson on Jul 16, 2007 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

Bonds has created a lot of this controversy
for himself; besides that, if the Giants really don't want him to play on the road, they'll either sit him or have him just pinch-hit once a game in road games.  In other words, there's no need for the commissioner's office to ban Bonds from playing on the road; the Giants can just keep him out of games if they really want to do that.  All the commissioner's office has to worry about is providing extra security if Bonds is within direct reach of the record.

In my opinion, that's a ridiculous argument by Phillips - can you believe he was actually a ML GM?  Mind-boggling to me.  :-)

Just my 2 cents.

Go Tribe! :-)
