Question from a Cardinals fan
We have debates going on what we should do long-term at shortstop, and obviously your team has a very good young starting shortstop in Peralta and a promising prospect in Cabrera.
With my Cardinals likely out of the race this year, we would likely be willing to part with our closer, Jason Isringhausen, assuming he'd waive his right(as a 10/5 player) to veto a trade.
Do you think, in the interests in obtaining a good closer(18 saves in 20 opps, 1.45 ERA, .93 WHIP for Izzy this year) that either of those guys is someone that your GM would be willing to trade?
I'd appreciate any input you guys can give on this, so I can link this and discuss this with my friends over at Viva El Birdos, the Cardinals blog here on SportsBlog Nation.
Thanks!

Re: Question from a Cardinals fan
As for Cabrera-Isringhause, it's an interesting thought but I don't think it fits Shapiro's profile.
The Indians put an incredible emphasis on young, cheap talent. That's exactly what Cabrera is. Isringhausen is the kind of pitcher that, had he been a FA this past year, the Indians would've liked to sign to a one year deal for around 6 million, like the Foulke deal.
As I alluded to, it's probably a half year rental for the Tribe; Isringhausen's price tag in 2008 is above what the team usually pays for bullpen help, especially non-elite, non-young, perhaps injury prone bullpen help. Isringhausen is in the midst of a great season, no doubt, but I don't think the FO is going to view him as a great bet to repeat that success next year.
I think something like this might have happened with Cabrera last year, but he's hit his way into a more valued status. Plus, his time clock lines up with Barfield's Boras' shopping season too nicely.

Can we interest you guys in one slightly used Hector Luna? Oh wait, you already know how much he sucks. I just don't think the Indians and Cardinals match up very well from a trading perspective.

Re: Question from a Cardinals fan
Rolen's really been a downward spiral of production since his last shoulder injury(running into someone in a collision at first base a couple years ago, don't remember who)
Sounds like if you guys were the GM, Izzy for Peralta is a no-go(which I expected) and Izzy for Cabrera is a solid maybe.
I'll definitely check back a little later, but this sounds interesting. If that trade were to come up, I think many of us over on the St. Louis side would be happy to make that trade as well, given that we're about 9 games out.
Oh yeah, last note on Izzy: If that trade happened, and you wanted him another year, his current contract has a team option for $8M for next year. I don't know if there's any stipulations regarding trades or not though.

Re: Question from a Cardinals fan
But the Cardinals likely would be willing to kick in some cash, and besides, Hafner's new contract (and possibly Sabathia's) don't kick in until 2009 anyway. So you never know.
Can we interest you in five B-minus outfield prospects? Hell, one of them is bound to "work out" ... sort of.

Re: Question from a Cardinals fan
If we're not getting a prospect that's likely to be a MLB regular(maybe not a star, but a regular), then we're not looking to shop Izzy, since we do control his contract situation next year.
I just wanted to throw this out there though.
Thanks for all the responses. It's pretty much a definite "no" for Peralta and a "probably no" for Cabrera. If we're even more out of it and you're still in it in about 10 days and more of those closers are off the market, maybe you'll feel differently ;)
But for now, I appreciate the input!

Re: Question from a Cardinals fan
In APV's stellar review of Astro's comps, Orlando Cabrera seemed to be the best one, and that sounds about right to me.
And it's a very exciting thing to have a potential Orlando Cabrera in your farm system, no doubt.

Again, don't just watch the production, watch the approach -- the method, not the result. Still very young.

Now, if we start talking an AstroCab+ package for Duncan, I'm listening. But of course Duncan isn't going anywhere.

No, that trade likely won't happen!
I agree with the others in this thread who said "no" to a Peralta-Izzy deal and "no" to a Cabrera-Izzy deal.
Cabrera has become that prized now where, short of a young potential, or even, established ace who's under control for the next few to several years at a cheap price, would the Indians even consider trading Cabrera.
I think both he and Peralta could be parts of the Indians IF for the next few years at least, due in part to the fact that Marte is inconsistent at AAA and his star is starting to fade; it's quite possible that Peralta could be shifted to 3B and Cabrera is brought up to SS even before Barfield's contract becomes a concern (isn't that 2009 or 2010?)
Izzy is having a great year, but he's always seemed to me to be one of those shaky closers who just wiggles his way through, much like a Wickman or a Borowski does, so I don't really see him as being that much of an upgrade. Based on his pitching this year, he might be a decent upgrade for Borowski this year, but for the money tied up and the loss of Cabrera, I'd definitely say that the chances of that trade occurring are probably less than 5% (and essentially, 0%.)
Just my 2 cents. :-)
