HR's, Average, and Strikeouts

Is it me or does it seem like there is an overwhelming expectation in MLB for most players these days to be hitting for power? I understand that the corner outfielders, 1B, 3B, DH and possibly  catcher are expected to have the ability to hit 20 or more bombs a year along with high RBI totals, but is there the same expectation for middle infielders?

My point is that it seems to me that when a player finds an unexpected power stroke, they may often keep swinging for the fences while ignoring fundamentals like hitting the ball where it's pitched, getting on base or just having the mentality that a single isn't such a bad thing.

Here is just a related question, and by no means a criticism:  Does anyone think that Grady's strikeouts are related to his desire to go yard?

Sorry for the rambling, unfocused post...
